Chapter 129: He is Just a Security Guard
Chapter 129: He is Just a Security Guard
"There’s nothing wrong with flattering him alone," Anran blurts out, the words escaping her without fully understanding why Xiao Mei is here. In truth, she doesn’t even agree with her own statement. She is living under Yun Tao’s protection, just like how Hu Zhen and Chen Jiao benefit from her.
But there’s no such thing as flattery between her and Yun Tao.
She and Yun Tao have only spoken twice—how can that be considered flattery? Xiao Mei should know the whole story from start to finish, yet now she’s standing at Anran’s door, accusing her of flattering Yun Tao.
In other words, the situation outside must be worse than what they have in this community. As a woman, Anran hasn’t fallen into the same fate as Xiao Mei. If flattering Yun Tao is what it takes to survive, at least it’s just flattery.
This thought is heartbreaking. Anran is still kind-hearted. She doesn’t voice it outright, but a growing conflict stirs within her.
Xiao Mei doesn’t seem to grasp what Anran means. She sneers and says, “Do you know I’m in this situation today because of Yun Tao’s indulgence? You think Yun Tao is a good person? He’s just a security guard. Before the end of the world, I could’ve had him removed with just one word.”
Before the apocalypse, Xiao Mei’s family had been quite wealthy. Her husband had connections with the developer of this community, and the property management company was a subsidiary of that developer. It’s no exaggeration that Xiao Mei could’ve had Yun Tao removed from his job as a security guard with just a word.
Anran stands at the doorway, her head lowered as she listens to Xiao Mei’s words. She slowly replies, “Xiao Mei, it’s the end of the world now. We all need to survive. We just want to live well.”
So, what can Anran do? Xiao Mei accuses her of siding with Yun Tao, but whose side should she take? Should she risk her daughter’s safety and confront Yun Tao?
No. Anran only wants to live peacefully with her baby. Even if she does flatter Yun Tao, what does it matter?
"But I don’t want to," Xiao Mei says, lifting her chin and exposing her slender neck, marred by scars left by Ren Xian. Her eyes flash with an inexplicable hatred as she looks at Anran. “After my daughter died, my husband handed me over to Wang Xin himself. Do you know what kind of despair that is? Anran, you can’t understand. I live like a dead person. I don’t want this life anymore.”
Before Anran can fully comprehend Xiao Mei’s words, Xiao Mei turns and presses the elevator button. Just before stepping inside, Xiao Mei glances back, tilting her head with a warning in her eyes. She stares at Anran as if cautioning her.
“No matter where you go, it’ll always be better than this community. Anran, you saved me from the sea of suffering. I’m grateful, but I don’t need it. I came here today just to advise you as a friend: leave as soon as possible and don’t get involved with garbage like Yun Tao.”
What does she mean? What is Xiao Mei planning to do?
Anran feels an unsettling sensation deep in her chest. She raises her eyes to understand Xiao Mei’s emotions, but before she can, Xiao Mei steps into the elevator.
Anran opens the door wider and rushes to follow, but all she sees is the golden elevator doors sliding closed with a faint crack. Xiao Mei is gone.
Staring at the closed elevator doors, Anran feels a hollow emptiness in her chest. She turns Xiao Mei’s words over and over in her mind.
The door on the right suddenly opens, and Liu Yuan steps out with Hengheng in her arms.
