Chapter 48: One of Us
From the moment Wen Wen appeared, Yu Hanguang's eyes couldn't help but twitch uncontrollably.
He wanted to curse out loud.
When he received the news from Jiang Jin about some good fortune, he was originally eager to see what impressive achievements Jiang Jin had made.
But as soon as he arrived, things took a turn for the worse.
There were no results at all, only the sight of that good-for-nothing Jiang Jin being slaughtered by two unknown figures.
At this point, how could he not realize that he had been dragged into a trap by that damned Jiang Jin? What a shameless act, playing tricks on him like this!
But when had Wen Wen, who always approached matters straightforwardly, learned to hold back? Instead of confronting the enemy directly, she sent two little mice to lure him out.
Little did he know, those two had barged in, creating chaos purely to set a trap, and the fishhook had long been lying in wait!
His gaze soon landed on Ji Jue, understanding dawning alongside a flicker of murderous intent.
Just as he suspected, he was a disaster...
Yet even so, he maintained an impassive expression.
Facing Wen Wen's questioning, he merely replied, “I received a tip-off that a group of terrorists has stormed a building in the northern district, slaughtering innocent civilians. In my haste, I didn’t have time to follow proper procedures and came straight here. But, Leader Wen, your speed seems rather slow. Are you in cahoots with these two?”
“Where are the terrorists? I don’t see them.”
Wen Wen looked around, acting blind to the scene, her gaze sweeping over the corpses and scattered bullet casings without a care. “I see a gang suspected of illegal smuggling, kidnapping, looting, and murder. The evidence is undeniable, and I was just about to wipe them all out. Who would have thought the true culprit would be someone else? Could it be you who’s providing these criminals with protection?”
As she spoke, she threw out a phone, its screen revealing photos, videos, and all the evidence Ji Jue had collected.
The glaring brightness stung Yu Hanguang's eyes, silencing his attempts at a defense.
Wen Wen flexed her wrist, eager to take action. “Leader Yu, please hand over the people. Otherwise, things could turn messy.”
Jiang Jin stood there dazed, his face drained of color, instinctively looking at his only lifeline.
But Yu Hanguang remained expressionless and unmoving.
Hand over people? Over my dead body!
He would never hand Jiang Jin over, not out of pity for his loyalty or capability, but because he trusted this scoundrel even less — who knows what this embarrassment of a person might be hiding? If that woman caught wind of his weak spot, it would take a long time to recover!
After all, why did he just save this idiot’s life?
“I believe you’ve misunderstood something, Leader Wen.”
Yu Hanguang slightly raised his hand, suppressing the crystallization that spread around them, putting Jiang Jin behind him. “I’ve been following this gang for a long time in secret, and I was just lamenting my lack of evidence. I never expected you to act so quickly; now it’s convenient for us to catch them all at once.”
“Is that so?”
Wen Wen chuckled, amused. “But you don’t seem like someone determined to eradicate evil. Isn’t the gang leader sitting right behind you?”
“I already said, this is a misunderstanding.”
A dark expression crossed Yu Hanguang's face. “He’s my informant, and I have files on him in Li Hua District. By the rules, he’s under my jurisdiction; I have no reason to hand him over to others. Isn’t that right, Mr. Jiang—”
He tilted his head slightly, glancing at the pitiful figure behind him.
“Ah? Ah! Yes, yes, yes!!!”
In an instant, Jiang Jin’s face lit up, a hint of color returning to his pale complexion. “It’s all a misunderstanding!”
He was nearly crying with joy: “It’s all self—”
Bang!
In that moment, his smile shattered.
Without warning, a deafening crack rang out.
The bullet struck him in the back of the head, piercing through a face that still bore a hint of delight, leaving behind a horrid grin of death.
Joy and happiness vanished in an instant, leaving only silence.
“Whew—”
Ji Jue raised his hand and calmly blew the gun’s smoke away. “An informant? How coincidental.”
He smiled slightly at the astonished Yu Hanguang. “I am too.”
He seemed to ponder deeply, almost regretfully, shrugging. “Ah, informant kills informant; it feels like a flood has washed away the dragon king’s temple. I didn’t expect it to be one of us! You should have said so earlier… right?”
In that moment, a storm of rage ignited in Yu Hanguang's eyes, his intent to kill fierce, like a razor ready to tear Ji Jue to shreds from a distance!
The only reason he didn’t act was not only because of Wen Wen’s protection but also because he held something in the other hand.
A phone.
From Jiang Jin.
After Jiang Jin’s demise, no one knew what that phone contained!
Couldn’t this embarrassing creature even control something so critical?!
His expression twitched slightly, his narrowed eyes swirling with barely contained malice.
Especially upon seeing Ji Jue’s look as if he was saying ‘Don’t mind me; I’m just playing around, you won’t get angry, will you?’…
Ji Jue, however, appeared unconcerned.
He stared back at Yu Hanguang, seemingly waiting to see if he had the guts to strike.
Investigating Ji Jue might have been one thing, but when the attack fell on Lu Ling under Jiang Jin’s lead, both sides had reached an utterly irreconcilable enmity.
It didn’t matter if Yu Hanguang could absolve himself from this mess!
At a time like this, if he didn’t hurry to choose a side and hold onto a strong ally, was he really going to lower himself to kneeling and begging for mercy?
Kneeling never solved anything; it only fueled the arrogance and boldness of those pulling the strings.
Those who were bare-footed, lacking the courage to stand tall, could only be hunted at will!
Eventually, from the eerie silence, Yu Hanguang reluctantly withdrew his gaze.
He did not erupt on the spot.
It was uncertain whether he was wary of Wen Wen or the contents of that phone.
“Very well.”
He squeezed the words through clenched teeth. “I’ll remember the help you provided today, Leader Wen.”
“No need to thank me; we’re colleagues. It’s only right for us to help one another,” Wen Wen replied with a smile. “Though Jiang Jin is dead, we’ve still caught another live one…”
As she spoke, a bashful boy with his head bowed walked in.
He looked so much younger than Ji Jue, perhaps from middle school, leaning on a crutch, his steps a bit unsteady.
Following him was the drenched figure of Bai Yi, despair etched on his face.
He showed no resistance, lacking the courage to fight back, even his breath seemed labored.
At this moment, he was as if tethered by invisible ropes, unable to utter a sound!
Wen Wen waved her hand generously. “If you’re interested, why not take him back with you as a gift from the Northern District team? It wouldn’t be a wasted trip.”
Yu Hanguang's face turned ashen, his anger boiling over.
“No, thank you. We’ll eradicate evil where it arises; let it be buried with them!”
With a snap of his fingers, Bai Yi’s complexion shifted dramatically.
Blood oozed from his mouth and nose, and before anyone could react, he cried out in horror as he turned to ash in invisible flames!
Dead!
Yu Hanguang cast Ji Jue a cold glance, saying nothing as he turned to leave, but he heard a voice behind him.
“Ah, right, Leader Yu.”
Wen Wen, draping her arm around Ji Jue’s shoulder, spoke pleasantly, “It’s normal for colleagues to have a few scrapes, but my little brother isn't in great health… if he gets hurt, and I end up annoyed, I might not be so reasonable next time.”
Since you wish to play by the rules, let’s adhere to them.
If someone plays the game without following the rules, then… there’s no point in the game continuing!
Yu Hanguang’s steps faltered.
As if grinding his teeth, he quickened his pace without looking back.
Just like when he came, a flash of lightning streaked by, and he vanished without a trace…
What a shame; he arrived so grandly, yet now he slipped away so disgracefully.
“Wow, he looks just like a dog,” Ji Jue remarked, clicking his tongue, as if someone had just smacked him on the head.
“You little brat, you’ve really got guts.”
Wen Wen shook her head helplessly. “Yu Hanguang is quite sinister; you’ve made an irreparable enemy today.”
“But aren’t you here, Sister Wen?” Ji Jue leaned closer, resting his head on Wen Wen's shoulder, looking weak and helpless. “You’ve gone through so much for me; you wouldn’t just leave me hanging, right?”
With that last syllable, Wen Wen nearly jumped out of her skin, goosebumps prickling her.
She almost smashed Ji Jue's head to bits!
Damn, what kind of weird little brat is this?!
As the aroma of tea filled the air, she pinched Ji Jue’s face firmly, unable to resist applying a little more force until he yelped out in suffering.
Finally, she released him slowly.
“Speak to me like that one more time, and I’ll confiscate your tools. Got it?”
She warned with a smile that didn't reach her eyes, and Ji Jue nodded obediently, almost shaking out a shadow.
The moment she received Ji Jue’s call and heard the outrageous rumors, she nearly exploded!
She had almost lost it and punched Tong Hua’s face for stifling his laughter.
If Ji Jue hadn’t held her back, claiming there was a better plan, she might have already cleaned up Jiang Jin and his entire gang multiple times over!
It was one thing for the rumors to proliferate, but watching everyone else look skeptical about whether it was true nearly broke her resolve.
Even if she suddenly went crazed looking for a partner, even if this little brat had some looks, how could he be so much younger? Did she fall into the category of being desperate enough to eat tender grass?!
“Alright, go home and get some sleep, you little rascal. Don’t worry about a thing. If they dare break the rules, if even a hair falls from your head, I’ll make Yu Hanguang pay for it all.”
She held back the urge to pulverize Ji Jue’s head along with the framework of that plan, seizing Jiang Jin’s phone in a swift motion before waving her hand. “Tonight is fine; come report to the northern district in a couple of days!”
“Ah?” Ji Jue was bewildered.
“Aren’t you my informant?”
Wen Wen coldly scoffed. “You need to meet my colleagues, don’t you? Otherwise, you’ll embarrass yourself by not recognizing anyone later.”
Having said that, she waved her hand and faded away.
The child following her paused for a moment, then quickly nodded at Ji Jue and the others before hurrying after her.
Even though she felt enraged about being the focus of such absurd gossip, seeing that Yu Hanguang suffer like that put Wen Wen in a good mood.
Especially the pent-up frustrations from being sidelined by this group of fools over time dissipated, even if only partially — okay, not really partially, more like not at all, but she wasn’t a person who held grudges, so at least it was something!
“Let’s go, Xiao An.”
She whistled and beckoned. “Call over Hua Hua and Old Zhang. Let’s celebrate with a drink!”
The child following her looked up, discerning her expression, and suddenly exclaimed, “Sister Wen, you haven’t laughed this happily in a long time.”
“…”
In the sudden silence, it felt as though Wen Wen had been struck by lightning.
She turned around stiffly, her expression twitching. “Who taught you such nonsense?”
“Ah? Sister Hua said that.” Ai An looked at her innocently, flipping through his notebook. “She said if Sister Wen laughed after something was done, you could say it like this…”
“Tong Hua—”
Wen Wen ground her teeth, thinking she might just take that brat’s head off to use as a wine cup!
“Come, let me teach you the follow-up to that line…”
She forced a smile, ruthlessly pinching Ai An’s ear. “—You talk too much, and you won’t get a bonus this month!”
