Chapter 47: Words Upon Launch - From the High Heavens to the Underworld
This morning, the editor messaged me, saying that my book was launched in the early hours of today.
It’s up again.
Time moves so fast.
It feels like I just uploaded the new book yesterday.
No, it seems like just yesterday when I finished the last one… That vibrant, thriving energy of life still lingers in my mind.
How did it turn into my launch day in the blink of an eye?
I must believe someone has sped up my sense of time.
I hope he comes forward and confesses soon, or else, I’ll make sure he won’t have a good time.
Of course, it could also be that joyful times are always fleeting… maybe?
Yet, I don’t think I was particularly joyful!
It turns out, life really does rush by too quickly, regardless of whether you’re happy or sad.
Only when you’re suffering do the days feel like years.
For instance — writer’s block, writer’s block, and more writer’s block.
It’s strange.
Before I uploaded, I could easily write thousands of words a day, accumulating drafts quickly.
But once the new book starts, things take a turn for the worse.
There are small blocks every three days, big blocks every five days.
Stuck here and stuck there, the good old days just tick away, and I find myself drained.
Each day, I tread carefully, feeling as if I’m walking on thin ice, just wanting to check if I can make it to the other side.
Who knows if I can? I don’t even know!
So, I ponder and hesitate, feeling the years slipping by while also feeling that they were wasted.
But when I look back, I see that my days were filled to the brim, almost beyond belief.
I often scroll through my past writings, and most of the time, I think, “Wow, I wrote that so well! How did I manage to create something so remarkable?” Then, more often than not, I find myself rolling around, crying, feeling like I could never write something that good again.
Sometimes, I deliberately revisit certain plots I liked because those days when I wrote them were filled with happiness.
Other times, I subconsciously skip over plots I don’t want to remember because the days surrounding those were either difficult or downright miserable.
Since graduating elementary school, I haven’t kept a diary, but looking back at those stories now, my dull past resurfaces before me once again.
Updates are like turpentine — they wrap around that past version of me when they fall from the branches.
After a time, those memories appear in the update list, lined up neatly like amber.
When I wrote this chapter, I celebrated my birthday with Bai Ze; when I wrote that chapter, Duoduo was ill; I remember being really sad when I updated this plot; that plot was tough to write, and I stayed up late, but looking back, it turned out really well… Those myriad bits and pieces of the past are nestled within the gaps of the plots, hidden in corners I hadn’t noticed before, suddenly jumping out at me when I look back.
Such distant moments, and you all helped me remember them.
Isn’t that amazing?
There are some perks to this job, right?
Since I began writing full-time, my life has become quite monotonous.
Most of my days are spent in front of a computer screen.
After finishing my writing, I collapse in my chair, unable to move.
I’ve given up on socializing and going out, no longer interacting with others, nor do I talk much with anyone.
Over time, I’ve become less inclined to message people, immersing myself in my little world, and gradually feeling as if I’m becoming transparent.
Looking back now, while feeling a sense of loss, I also feel…
It’s so damn enjoyable!
How can there be such a good thing in this world?!
What was I doing before? Oh, I seemed to have started writing right away.
Thinking about it this way makes it feel even better.
When I was young, I often thought the world was so dark, and I was determined to fight and conquer it all! But now, while this world still isn’t the best, at least I’ve found that safe place where I can truly be at ease.
As long as I can write, I feel happy.
If readers can enjoy it, then I think it’s worth biting the bullet.
Of course, if I didn’t have to update every day, that would be even better — life would feel like flowing rivers of milk and honey, with fig trees heavy with fruit.
If I could write a book that readers would remember for a lifetime, then my life wouldn’t seem empty after all.
So, I’ll work harder, grit my teeth, and endure a bit more.
When I was fourteen, I imagined leaving my hometown, going to places I’d never been, and living a meaningful life.
Back then, I didn’t know what a meaningful life was, but I hoped to achieve at least something.
Now, looking back, I realize that living for fifty years and doing one thing well is already quite extraordinary.
If I could manage to accomplish several things, that would be incredible.
Looking at it this way, I think I haven’t done as badly as I feared.
At the very least, I can put food on the table, take care of Bai Ze and Duoduo, and hopefully allow Duoduo to live a life free of dog food.
Well, actually, Bai Ze and Duoduo take care of me… but I contribute too! As the cared-for, I provide tons of valuable emotional support!
If life is a battle, then I’m here to laugh it off — that’s my role, for I have a loud voice!
But aside from complaining about life, I have nothing else left but work.
Writing, updating, writer's block, and here we go again.
I can foresee that the future will be this cyclical routine — year after year, month after month.
I hope that one day I can live a beautiful life, smoothly writing without hitting any blocks, but that feels very distant.
If I’m going to hit a block, so be it; I’ll write even through it.
If inspiration doesn’t come, I’ll seek it out, going wherever I must — from the high heavens to the underworld.
If both places offer no answers, I’ll go somewhere else.
Big or small, I will find it.
If I still can’t find it, I’ll look again, pretending I found it, and grit my teeth to continue writing.
Now, destiny calls and it’s time for launch! Even though I have barely any drafts left and the future seems uncertain, after being anxious for so many days, I surprisingly feel a hint of relief — it’s like finally being sent to the guillotine after too much procrastination.
No more hesitation; the plan is set.
Once again, the endless journey begins.
No matter whether I’m prepared or not, I must continue forward.
I hope luck and creativity continue to favor me, just as they have always done.
I hope you can all appreciate my humble efforts.
After such a long time, we meet once more at the starting point of this journey.
Now, the celestial train, the Apocalypse Express, is ready to depart.
The conductor, Ji Jue, has waited for quite some time.
Please, passengers, board in an orderly fashion with your tickets in hand.
I sincerely wish everyone a pleasant journey.
And I hope we can meet again at the journey’s end.
Thank you all!
Thank you!
Both Duoduo and I love you all, truly!
