Chapter 44: Good Fortune Comes
As dusk approached, a shabby van parked itself in the lonely garage.
Having just pulled a reckless stunt by firing wildly from his own car, Lu Feng was unwilling to take his vehicle out for work.
Fortunately, his three overly enthusiastic friends had generously lent him their ride before leaving, allowing him to drive it wherever he pleased for as long as he needed.
Thus, Lu Feng skillfully navigated through the streets of Cliff City, arriving at a run-down, dilapidated building that looked like it hadn't seen proper maintenance in years.
Before he even parked, his head popped out the window to beam a bright, obsequious smile at a woman leaning against the door, her face marred by a prominent scar.
“Laila, um…,” he started, bowing slightly and rubbing his hands, “do you still have any guns?”
Laila fell silent for a long moment, taking a deep breath.
What followed was a ten-minute barrage of elegantly expressed curses, showcasing a masterful command of street vernacular and foul language.
“Do you remember just a few hours ago when some scumbag told me he wanted a life without guns?” Laila exclaimed, slapping a large fist right onto Lu Feng's forehead.
Another hit followed, “Do you think this is a supermarket? We’re a security company, not a hit squad! We don’t even have our signage up yet — are you trying to make sure I die slowly?”
“Wasn’t it just…,” Lu Feng started to defend himself.
“How dare you speak!” Laila's fury erupted again, punctuated by another round of vitriolic remarks. “Last time, it almost brought the security bureau knocking on my door when I had to cover your mess!”
“But they never showed up anyway. I told you, I have it under control,” Lu Feng boldly replied, throwing an arm around her shoulder. “Help a brother out, will you? It's a favor in the world of the Jianghu; I swear, once this is all done, I’ll be as loyal as a dog.”
Without hesitation, Laila punched him in the gut. “Why don’t you just offer yourself instead?”
“Um...” Lu Feng hesitated, “I... I’m afraid of the dark...”
In an instant, the burly men nearby roared with laughter, while Laila’s dark-skinned face turned a menacing shade of green as she swiftly gifted him a pair of black eyes in return.
Blood started to drip from his nose.
“Dammit, knowing you has ruined my life!” she exclaimed in frustration, kicking him sharply before marching inside.
Lu Feng, acting as if nothing had happened, got up, gestured for Ji Jue to follow him, and casually greeted the burly men at the door, introducing, “This is my younger brother. Keep your eyes peeled when you see him.”
“Oh, the second one, huh?”
“Hey, second brother!”
“Come play with us sometime; we’ll take you shooting. It’s a real thrill.”
Amid the exchanges, Lu Feng smirked coldly; everyone knew what they were really implying.
Shooting? That kid barely knew how to hold a gun, and if any foolish soul dared to bet money on him, they’d better be ready to have their pants pulled down as well.
Without a hint of formality, the men led them straight into a basement room, prying back a couple of wall panels to reveal a treasure trove of... arms!
Ji Jue’s eyes nearly bulged out in astonishment.
They claimed to be a security company, yet here was a vault bursting with automatic weapons.
From handguns to rifles to shotguns, every model he’d read about was laid out before him.
Laila, who looked particularly sour, seemed to have emptied her entire inventory.
“Take what you want and get out; every time I see you, it’s nothing but trouble,” she coldly remarked, folding her arms.
“Wow, Brother Feng,” Ji Jue whispered, “it's hard to not sell myself into debt after this.”
“Shut up!” Lu Feng grumbled, giving Ji Jue a light smack on the back of his head before striding in boldly to go ‘shopping,’ leaving Ji Jue dazed, staring wide-eyed at everything in awe.
Especially when he spotted a corner where a group of retired soldiers had oddly set up a rotary-style press… “Hey, is the base of your veteran club really that loaded?”
Meanwhile, Lu Feng continued to scrutinize the gear, grumbling about what was missing. “I thought there’d be a suit of powered armor.”
“Powered armor my ass!” Laila exploded. “If I had powered armor, I’d crush your skull right now!”
Lu Feng shook his head. “Come on, look at you, you need to calm down.”
“Lu, you filthy…”
Just as they prepared to launch their usual bickering, Ji Jue’s voice cut in, “Laila, um, can I borrow this?”
The moment he instinctively reached out to the items nearby, he sensed a powerful resonance unlike anything he’d felt before, like a fierce shout rising above the noise, drowning out everything else.
It was as if a dying soul buried deep within the earth was roaring in defiance against the silence.
Without a sound, it was like thunder.
On the shelving unit against the wall!
That grim weapon, thick with dust, had clearly been untouched for ages.
Lu Feng instinctively gasped when he followed Ji Jue’s gaze. “No way, you really have it?”
The Mammoth II Anchor Assault Rifle, proudly produced by Watchtower Industries, renowned for decades and responsible for countless bloodshed and death.
But the critical part? This weapon wasn’t meant for human use!
It was a module designed for military exoskeleton power armor!
Even if it had been re-painted or reshaped, Lu Feng recognized it at a glance.
“When we imported from the Central Lands, the local tribes threw it in as a bonus, but it’s already been decommissioned,” Laila stated, shaking her head. “Kid, that thing’s a ticking time bomb.”
“Don’t worry, it won’t blow,” Ji Jue chuckled. “At least not today.”
He then reached into his backpack and pulled out a portable spirit probe.
After so long studying alchemy, he finally found a practical use for it...
When they arrived empty-handed, they left with hands full.
Both were weighed down with long rifles, handguns, and ammunition, causing Ji Jue to struggle under the load.
Watching his hoard and treasures vanish in mere minutes made Laila’s expression darken even further, following closely behind, fearing they would grab more good stuff on their way out.
She finally sighed in relief after they sped off in the rusty van.
“Hey, you’re just leaving, huh?” called out a burly man missing a middle finger, poking his head out. “You were so dead-set earlier; I thought there’d be no hope left.”
“Him?” Laila couldn’t help but sneer. “That scumbag's just putting on a show; we all know what kind of worthless creature he is.”
Living a peaceful life? Is that the kind of person Lu Feng is?
Even after all these years, she couldn’t forget the first time she met Lu Feng in that blasted battlefield, amidst clouds of smoke and the craters left by Imperial artillery.
The man sitting on a pile of corpses, smoking without a care in the world.
He was new to the battlefield, yet he showed no fear, a calm and joyous grin on his face, as if he were… going home.
“He will come back eventually,” Laila whispered. “He can’t let go of his guns.”
Like how one can’t forget to breathe.
“Dammit, I can’t take this!” Lu Feng groaned from the passenger seat, finally catching his breath. “Carrying this much stuff, I thought Laila would go ballistic. Good thing you’re here, Xiao Ji!”
“My reputation isn’t worth a dime!” Ji Jue rolled his eyes. “Do you think Laila is doing this for you? Quickly, put those biceps of yours to use and tell me, what are they after? Do they want me to fix a car or something?”
“Maybe? When you whipped out that probe, she practically lit up!” Lu Feng draped an arm around Ji Jue’s shoulder, advising, “If she asks you to do work later, don’t lowball her! I’ll get you a military maintenance price list, and just stick to that!”
Military? A price list?
You mean the one with those coffee mugs priced over two thousand imperial coins?
You plan to hand that to your life savior? The one who rescued you twice already…
Ji Jue’s eyes widened in shock, turning to Lu Feng with admiration. “You really are something else, Brother Feng!”
“What kind of talk is that, you little brat!”
“Shh—” Ji Jue suddenly raised a hand, cutting Lu Feng off. “The phone’s ringing.”
One of the phones from their three friends lit up, the screen flashing with the name “Brother Ming.”
It appeared to be their boss.
Scarface Ming.
As soon as the call connected, a furious voice burst out from the other end: “What’s going on? Why now…?”
“Hello? Brother Ming! We caught him!” Ji Jue answered, holding the phone steady as he mimicked the joyous tone of the original owner. “We’ve got him, along with that kid too. We’re delivering them right to you!”
“What did you say?!” The voice on the other side was momentarily stunned, as if taken aback. “You caught that kid too?”
“Yeah, we got a bit of a head start, and that kid tried to stick with us for a bit. In the end, the fourth guy hit him from behind with a bat, and he went down.”
Amid the sound of background chaos, another voice piped in: “Show me on video!”
The call was disconnected, and soon a video came through.
Naturally, through the phone’s camera, it revealed nothing but an ecstatic face, two injured figures, and a barely conscious Ji Jue in the back.
But the face on-screen made Ji Jue’s eyes widen in surprise.
The unkempt, disheveled visage…
He had seen it just that morning!
This was the person mentioned in the texts, Qi Qin?
“Bring him back!” Qi Qin’s eyes lit with a fiery glint upon confirming it was Ji Jue, “Direct to the office; the boss is already prepared!”
“Should we kill him directly?” Ji Jue asked tentatively.
“I'll kill your mom!” Qi Qin suddenly roared, voice rising with aggression. “Bring him back whole, understand?! If he loses even a hair… Dammit, with this situation, nothing can go wrong. Do you understand?!”
“Yes, yes, we’re on our way!”
The false masks in the communication shifted into obsequious smiles.
After hanging up, silence fell heavy in the cramped van.
Lu Feng diligently adjusted the weapons in his hands — a handgun, two submachine guns, a shotgun — checking them over meticulously.
Once finished with every piece in his bag, he slowly raised his head, a smile creeping onto his face.
Yet this smile was different, cold and sinister, like a beast thirsting for blood, unable to resist its feast.
“Are you ready, Xiao Ji?”
“Am I supposed to let you go solo?” Ji Jue rolled his eyes and raised a fist. “Burn his family, beat his mother!”
As a result, Lu Feng’s smile grew wider.
“Burn his family, beat his mother!!!”
With the engine’s deep rumble, the van dashed down the road, like thunder.
Thus, amid the festive music of good fortune echoing from the radio, they raced toward the dazzling neon lights.
In the distance, night was just falling.
