Chapter 43: Game
"……"
Lu Feng gave himself a hard knock on the forehead, making sure this wasn’t a hallucination.
He turned to the few people on the ground, astonished: “What’s going on?”
“I don’t know,” Lu Ling choked out, shaking her head.
Her eyes were red: “They rushed at me, trying to grab me and pull me into their car. I ran, but they kept chasing me.”
“And this…” Lu Feng pointed at the small, gasping bull-like creature nearby, struggling to determine, “Is this... our car?”
“I don’t know.”
Seeing Lu Feng pull out a gun, Lu Ling hurriedly hugged the creature tightly, “It’s a good creature, don’t scare it!”
Lu Feng was dumbfounded, words escaping him.
After a while, the thoughts in his head finally interconnected, the instincts for violence retreating to let him think.
He managed to regain a bit of clarity.
“I’ll take you home first. Get yourself sorted out, don’t tell Mom, or she’ll worry and be scared all the time.” He reached out, hugging the girl before him carefully, afraid to touch her injuries.
When he saw the wound on her forehead where the hair had been pulled out, his eyes momentarily lost focus and color.
Quickly, under Lu Ling's gaze, he forced out a smile.
“Don’t be scared.” He patted Lu Ling's cheek gently. “A gang of lowlifes? I’ll deal with them. If the big brother can’t, the second brother will, right?”
“Mm.”
Holding his hand, Lu Ling felt brave again.
About ten minutes later, in the evening, Ji Jue, who was eating takeout, heard his phone in his pocket vibrating furiously.
Without thinking, he answered, “Hello, Brother Feng…”
Then, his smile vanished.
“I see, okay, I’ll come right over.”
After hanging up, he set down his chopsticks.
“What’s wrong?” Ye Chun looked at him. “What’s the matter?”
“Family is looking for me about something. I might not be able to work overtime tonight and tomorrow.” He forced a smile, “Sister, can I take a leave?”
“Come on, you look like a ghost, why act like this?” Ye Chun rolled her eyes. “Hurry up and go, need money urgently or what?”
“No, I’m leaving now.”
Before she finished, Ji Jue gathered his things, hesitated for a moment, picked up another portable probing tool from the toolbox, and tucked it into his pocket. “I need to borrow this.”
“Don’t you dare run off, you better return it!”
Ye Chun’s voice followed him as he closed the door, nearly muffled by the sound.
He dashed out towards the factory exit.
On the street outside, a van was parked across from the automotive repair shop.
Through the rolled-down window, Lu Feng could be seen smoking while sitting in the driver’s seat.
Ji Jue opened the door and sat in the passenger seat. “Is the little sister alright?”
“She just scraped her forehead a bit; we put some iodine on it. Mostly, she was scared.”
Lu Feng flicked away the ash and pointed at the small dog-like motorcycle, hidden in the back, with a complex expression. “In every sense of the word.”
“…”
Ji Jue’s expression turned awkward. “I can’t explain that in a short time. Didn’t you ride it for two or three years? Anyway, it’s ours.”
Whose pet sheep is so fierce? It can eat chicken legs, fight, and even execute five lightning-fast moves to defeat its opponent in one go.
It’s not that Lu Feng underestimated himself; he doubted he could stand face to face against it unarmed.
After all, everyone’s made of flesh, but who could stand up to reinforced steel? Besides, this thing was made entirely of metal; even a slide kick wouldn’t help, it could only deliver veggies.
“Where are the others?”
After setting down his bag, Ji Jue asked directly.
Lu Feng pointed again, behind the small dog, there was a mass covered by waterproof cloth, still wriggling and bulging.
Ji Jue nodded, tapping the steering wheel, and soon the van started, following Ji Jue’s navigation.
“Hey, you’ve got skills!”
Lu Feng clicked his tongue in admiration as he followed him into the back of the van.
Lifting the waterproof cloth, they saw several bloody faces, even unrecognizable, tied up in ropes of their own making, struggling and whimpering.
Their expressions were fierce.
It seemed they were trying to say something threatening.
“Have you questioned them?” Ji Jue asked.
“Not yet.” Lu Feng extended his hand, checking their arms and legs, glancing at the tattoos, he understood, “These guys have probably been in and out a few times. They won’t talk without some professional methods.”
“No worries, we don’t need them.”
Ji Jue’s hand delved into their pockets, and soon he pulled out three mobile phones.
Then the screens lit up.
No password, no face recognition.
The phones unlocked faster than an old lecher could drop his pants.
Before those three men’s eyes, the screens jumped with messages, call records, social media interactions, and various apps, even deleted messages.
“Scarface Ming? Qi Qin? And… Jiang Jin?”
As Ji Jue muttered to himself, call records and numbers lined up on the phone.
In an instant, they caught sight of everything that had happened before.
They had already been watching him when Sister Wen visited him in the hospital, hadn’t they?
“Now I get it…”
He set the phone down with a sigh. “Brother Feng, I was wrong; they’re after me.”
Lu Feng paused before giving him a no-nonsense slap on the back of the head, “Isn’t this about our family? Why are you going around in circles?”
Ji Jue was about to say something, but his words got stuck as he was drawn in by the photos on the screen.
Lu Feng leaned in curiously, only to freeze in place.
On the screens of three phones, photos flickered by—dimly lit rooms, unkempt dorms, single beds stained with filth, and more...
bodies.
Some wore tattered clothes; others were entirely naked.
Some puffed on cigarettes with indifferent smiles, while others, bruised and disheveled, curled up, trying to cover their faces, but the marks on their wrists and arms told a different story…
Caged, suspended.
Along with distant cries and sobs from the videos.
Making Lu Feng's pupils gradually hollow out.
As he looked at those people, only a slowly spreading savage ferocity remained on his face.
“Seems like their entertainment life is pretty rich.”
He lowered his head, observing the fearful faces of those making muffled sounds, suddenly asking, “What were you planning to do with my sister?”
The man at the front, with a ruined face, struggled to move, gagged on a piece of cardboard in his mouth, and choked out, “Brother, please! It was a misunderstanding! I was just joking! I…”
“Really?”
Lu Feng smiled, “That’s quite funny.”
Ji Jue’s expression shifted. “Brother Feng, wait—”
Bang!
He already pulled the trigger, and the man’s face exploded into a spray of blood.
How hilarious.
Then, the gun was aimed at another target, but Lu Feng’s hand was seized, stopping short, while underneath the gun’s muzzle, the face reflected relief and ecstasy.
“What are you doing?”
Lu Feng glared at Ji Jue, revealing his hostility.
“Are you insane?”
Ji Jue’s furious glare was as if he wanted to hit him: “Is Lu Ma never using this van again? Do you know how hard it is to clean up the murder traces in this car? Can’t you wait till we get to the seaside?”
“Huh?” Lu Feng was momentarily taken aback.
“‘Huh’ what? Think a bit more about the big brother while working!”
Ji Jue forcefully snatched the gun from him, glaring at the sticky blood on it, exasperated. “Now, not only will the bodywork need repairs, but this whole car requires a deep clean. Plus, with this blood… What if someone shines a UV light on it in the future? You’ll say you were transporting live pigs? You better clean the reagents you bought later!”
“... Oh.”
Lu Feng nodded dumbly.
After his anger subsided, he began to dread how to explain to his mother about the new hole in the van.
But glancing sideways, he couldn’t help but ask, “So what about these two?”
Ji Jue glanced at the gun in hand, sighed, and eventually withdrew the bullet from the chamber, tucking it back into his pocket.
“Forget it. We’re all out here trying to make a living; there’s no need for such deadly disputes.”
He patted one of the men on the shoulder, “What’s that saying? In this world, one’s life isn’t entirely in their hands, right? I’m not the sort who seeks vengeance. If possible, I wouldn’t want to kill anyone.”
“Mmm! Wuuuu!”
The two who could still breathe nodded furiously, twisting in the blood, almost crying.
Even the speeding van came to a slow stop.
Outside the window, the sound of waves gradually arose, the surface of the sea reflecting sparkling lights, like countless little suns leaping about.
Ji Jue opened the car door for them, revealing the dazzling light outside.
Within their constraints, they eagerly nodded, desperately trying to show grateful smiles, but their gaze was irresistibly drawn to something in that light…
Those eyes, resembling an abyss.
Pitch black.
Gazing down at the boundless ocean below the cliffs.
Thus, they earnestly pleaded.
“Since you’ve grown accustomed to being powerless, would it be too much to struggle once more before the end?”
He said: “Could you please… jump down yourselves?”
In the afternoon sea breeze, the sound of the tide surged.
Finally, Lu Feng, having barely cleaned the blood from the back, jumped out of the van, holding onto a dirty pillowcase, unsure of how to clean it. “Xiao Ji, how do I wash this? It seems the color won’t come off.”
“Just throw it away.”
Ji Jue sat on the railing, enjoying the breeze and admiring the scenery. “Give Lu Ma a new one to be grateful for once in a while!”
“Why is it always me paying when you suggest something? In the end, you’ll just steal my mom’s good impression!” Lu Feng complained, peering down.
In the sea breeze, below the cliff, a lone pine swayed with a person struggling to hold onto a branch, shouting something, but the wind was too strong to hear.
A gust of sea wind blew by, and the bound person helplessly swayed, along with the two comrades hanging below.
The surviving companion’s lips continually moved, as if cheering him on, urging him not to give up, to pull himself up quickly.
On that rope, the grasshoppers struggled in an awkward dance.
“Wow, he’s still hanging on? I’m starting to admire him,” Lu Feng said, lighting a cigarette cheerfully. “How long do you think he can last?”
“Don’t know.”
“I’ll bet twenty bucks that it’ll be ten minutes!”
“Not betting.”
“Hey, come on, just once! You’ve got no sense of fun… better watch out, or you might not find a girlfriend in the future.”
“Fine, I’ll bet. Fifty bucks.”
“Fifty, then!”
As soon as Lu Feng finished, he saw Ji Jue get up from the railing, pick a stone from the ground, and throw it down below, instantly infuriating Lu Feng. “Hey, that’s cheating!”
“You didn’t say I couldn’t.”
Ji Jue countered naturally. “Besides, can’t you stop me?”
“……”
Lu Feng seemed to mutter a curse, helplessly took out fifty bucks from his pocket and slapped it into Ji Jue’s hands, then took the stone from him.
Thus, under the setting sun, the happy stones flew into the waves one after another.
One after the other.
It felt like the most blissful game during summer vacation in childhood.
The latter half of the month is packed with too many major events, and now I’m queuing up to the fourteenth.
Ugh, I’m stuck on my writing, this is so hard on the kids.
By then, I’ll be relying on the older brothers and sisters for support (Humbly bowing).
