Chapter 48: Brethren of Blue Asia Star
Lan Xiaobu clenched his fist and began cultivating the Soul Tempering Technique. His martial arts had reached a bottleneck, and he could no longer make any progress after entering the Meridian Opening Realm. Initially, he planned to try his luck on Kunlun Mountain, but he didn’t expect to encounter Gong shortly after entering Kunlun and then find a flying saucer.
Before Lan Xiaobu could start his cultivation, he received even more important information: Lian had a ring in his possession, a ring that was extremely important to him, seemingly able to store things. However, in Lian's memory, he had not opened this ring.
A ring that can store things? Has the technology of extraterrestrial civilizations developed to such an extent that they can compress space into something the size of a ring and produce it?
Lan Xiaobu had heard of space rings in myths and legends. Perhaps the existence of space rings was not mere legend; perhaps there was indeed such a thing?
Without hesitation, Lan Xiaobu approached Lian's side. He didn’t care about Lian's bones earlier, but now he noticed that there was a silver ring on one of Lian's fingers. If it weren't for obtaining Lian's complete memory, he definitely wouldn't have paid attention to this ring. Unless he closely observed Lian's bones, as the bones of a dead person, Lan Xiaobu naturally had no interest in examining them carefully.
He took off the ring and observed it repeatedly, only to find that the ring was just like an ordinary ring. He checked it multiple times, even performing a blood test, but this ring was simply an ordinary ring. Just like the small wooden box he had obtained earlier, the ring had no ability to store anything.
Perhaps he had not found a way to open the ring, or perhaps the information Lian had acquired was incorrect.
Lan Xiaobu put the ring on his finger; it didn’t matter if he couldn’t find it now—it could wait until later.
Feeling accomplished, Lan Xiaobu began to cultivate the Soul Tempering Technique. As for where Kunlun would fly and how it would fly, he didn’t care at all. Even if Kunlun accidentally became entangled in a spatial rift, he wouldn't mind losing his life. Once he left Earth and entered the vast universe, he knew that his chances of survival weren't great, and this had nothing to do with whether food was sufficient.
Time gradually passed. When Lan Xiaobu stepped into the first stage of the Soul Tempering Technique, he was pleasantly surprised to discover that his consciousness could sense things within a foot around him. Even places where his eyes couldn't see, his mind could perceive.
The Soul Tempering Technique clearly stated that its cultivation was merely to temper the soul, making it stronger; it did not mention the ability to sense things that the eyes could not see.
Lan Xiaobu was certain that this was not a function of the Soul Tempering Technique that had been omitted; something special must have occurred during his cultivation process.
Regardless of the reason, the ability to cultivate to a point where he could sense things invisible to the eyes excites Lan Xiaobu. It further solidified his determination to elevate the Soul Tempering Technique to a higher realm; perhaps one day his mind would be able to sense even greater distances.
Just like when he cultivated the Muscle-Tendon Altering Sutra, Lan Xiaobu found that his speed in practicing the Soul Tempering Technique was similarly swift. According to Lian's memorization of the technique, it would take at least several years for someone talented to progress from the first to the second stage. As for the leap from the second to the third stage, even those with talent would find it extremely difficult; luck was necessary. Lian had been stuck at the second stage unable to break through.
In just a little over a month, Lan Xiaobu felt he was near the threshold of the second stage. However, he also noticed another issue: the speed of his cultivation slowed the further he progressed. This was not the most crucial point; what mattered more was that when he had just entered the first stage, his consciousness could sense items within a foot around him. Now, as he approached the second stage threshold, with the tempering of his soul, his spirit had been significantly enhanced. Yet his consciousness could still only sense things within a foot's radius.
His soul had been tempered, yet his sensory perception had not increased—something wasn't right.
Lan Xiaobu frowned in thought, recalling that he gained the Soul Tempering Technique by completely annihilating Lian through soul tearing. After acquiring the technique, he started cultivating immediately, at a time when his soul was still in pain from being torn apart...
Could it be that in order to enhance his mind's perception, he needed to continuously tear at his own soul?
As this thought crossed his mind, Lan Xiaobu shivered all over. That was truly horrifying; he didn't want to imagine the kind of agonizing pain that would seep into his bones again.
But thinking about the prospect of enhancing his perception through such a method, Lan Xiaobu couldn't suppress that desire.
Forget it; if he wasn't afraid of death, why fear pain? Tear away!
Acting on impulse, Lan Xiaobu felt a terrifying pain surge through him; both his soul and skin trembled, making even his bones hard to bear, as he experienced almost convulsive spasms.
However, this time, Lan Xiaobu only tore at his soul briefly before immediately beginning to operate the Soul Tempering Technique. Within just two days, he was overjoyed to find that the range his mind could sense had increased from one foot to two feet. And not just that, his speed of cultivation in the Soul Tempering Technique was also accelerating.
His guess was correct; in that case, what was there to hesitate about? Tearing at his soul wasn't a one-time thing. The difference between enduring more pain and less pain wasn’t significant; he would do it again!
...
Lan Xiaobu completely immersed himself in this endless cycle of cultivation. Months flew by, and although he had yet to step into the second stage of the Soul Tempering Technique, his mind could now sense out to five or six meters.
His soul was continuously torn, then repaired only to be torn again, solidifying his spirit immensely. If Lian came to seize control again, Lan Xiaobu would resolve him in just a few breaths.
"Detected traces of the flying saucer, detected traces of the flying saucer, please advise..." The sudden voice from Kunlun jolted a deeply focused Lan Xiaobu from his meditative state.
He glanced at the glass vial beside him that contained the Vital Core Element Elixir, estimating that he had been cultivating for over four months. Looking over at the ancient path not far away, he found that the little wolf had already grown to a height of one foot. Despite not having eaten meat, only consuming bitter plants and the Vital Core Element Elixir, his growth was not slow.
Aside from the initial month or so, Lan Xiaobu had fed the little wolf some bitter plants and a vial of Vital Core Element Elixir. In the following months, the little wolf would regularly open a vial of Vital Core Element Elixir and eat a bitter plant on his own. Perhaps it understood that its master was not very reliable and that it needed to be self-sufficient whenever possible.
Its growth with no meat to eat made Lan Xiaobu wonder; if it had access to meat, perhaps the little wolf might have grown into a two-foot-tall creature by now.
What pleased Lan Xiaobu was that the little wolf was quite understanding, knowing exactly what he was doing. It never disturbed his cultivation.
"Not bad." Lan Xiaobu patted the little wolf on the head in appreciation before turning his gaze to the large screen.
At that moment, the screen displayed an image of a flying saucer, clearly not one from Kunlun itself.
"Can you estimate what level this flying saucer is? By the way, we have already left the Milky Way, right?" Lan Xiaobu asked. He knew Kunlun was a product of the Level-5 technological civilization. If this flying saucer were also of Level 5 or higher, it indicated the presence of planets above Level 5; he preferred to keep his distance.
Although he had absorbed much technological knowledge and wished to learn more about advanced civilizations, he understood that a Level 5 civilization would not view life forms from lower civilizations with any respect. It would be normal for them to eradicate him casually.
"It is a junior technological civilization battle shuttle. So far, we have not detected our presence. We left the Milky Way three months ago." Kunlun’s voice replied.
Junior technological civilization? In Lan Xiaobu's understanding of the knowledge he acquired, this was the minimum level to step into technological civilized planets. Technological civilized planets were divided into seven levels, with junior being Level 1 and the highest level being Level 7.
"Kunlun, what level is Earth as a technological civilization planet?" Thinking about Earth, Lan Xiaobu presumes it likely belongs to the junior category as well. However, given the intelligence and progress in aerospace, perhaps it was Level 2.
"Based on Earth's technological level, it currently does not qualify as a technological civilization planet." Kunlun’s voice came through.
Lan Xiaobu rubbed his head; with that level of technological advancement, Earth wasn’t even considered a junior technological civilization planet. He wondered how powerful Level 7 civilization planets must be.
"Kunlun, can you also disguise yourself as a junior technological civilization flying saucer?" Lan Xiaobu inquired.
Wandering in the vast universe wasn't a sustainable choice; even if he could endure the solitude, long periods of it would eventually weigh heavily on his mind. Fortunately, he had been continuously cultivating the Soul Tempering Technique, so he could still cope with the pressure for now.
"Yes." Kunlun responded.
"Then disguise yourself as a flying saucer of similar grade, and approach it for discovery." Lan Xiaobu ordered immediately.
Kunlun had an attack system; however, the energy consumption was a bit high. If a junior flying saucer attempted to attack him, he could easily teach them a lesson on how to be a docile flying saucer... no, more accurately, flying saucer debris.
Sure enough, as Kunlun disguised itself as a junior flying saucer and deactivated its cloaking, the other flying saucer quickly detected Kunlun's presence and sent a message.
"Could this be a fellow of Blue Asia Star? I am Ke’er of the Battling Tide Army of Blue Asia Star..."
Blue Asia Star? Lan Xiaobu immediately realized that it was because Kunlun had adjusted its signal mode to resemble that of the other, leading them to believe he was also from Blue Asia Star.
Before Lan Xiaobu could respond, the other party sent another message: "Blue Asia Star has been occupied by the Flying Jade Star; the planet has been enslaved, and I am fleeing to True Promise Star..."
