Laying the Foundation (1)
I stared at the flickering status window hovering in my vision, its blood-red border pulsing like an open wound. The damn thing had been glitching ever since I woke up in this body, in this era that shouldn’t exist. Laying the foundation, huh? That was the plan. But the System clearly had other ideas.
The air smelled of incense and distant rain. Outside the modest courtyard, servants moved like shadows, unaware that the man they served was no longer the original Jin Hwan. Or rather, I was him now—reincarnated, rewritten, whatever the hell the gods had decided to call it. My fingers tightened around the edge of the wooden desk. This wasn’t some gentle isekai story. This was the Three Kingdoms, except every legendary figure I’d once read about had been reshaped into devastatingly beautiful women. And I possessed the one power that could bend them all to my will.
Memory manipulation. Mind control. The words echoed in my thoughts like a dark promise. I could already feel the ability stirring beneath my skin, hungry and patient. But first I needed a base. Allies. Resources. A single misstep here would mean a blade in the dark or, worse, becoming someone else’s pawn in this deadly game of empires.
I stood and walked to the window. In the distance, the silhouette of the capital rose against a bruised sky. Somewhere out there, the gender-swapped versions of Cao Cao, Liu Bei, and Sun Quan were already moving their pieces. I allowed myself a small, sharp smile. They had no idea what was coming.
Time to start building. Quietly. Ruthlessly. One carefully placed command at a time.
The first step was simple: secure my own household. The original owner of this body had been a minor noble with a few loyal retainers and a couple of pretty maids who kept casting curious glances my way. Perfect testing ground. I could feel the power coiling in my chest, waiting for me to speak the words that would rewrite their loyalty until it belonged only to me.
But even as the thought sent a dark thrill through me, the System window flickered again—another warning, another glitch. Whatever force had brought me here clearly wasn’t finished installing the rules. Fine. I’d work around it. I always did.
Outside, one of the maids approached the doorway, her steps light and hesitant. She bowed deeply, the curve of her neck pale in the lantern light.
“My lord,” she said softly, voice carrying that formal cadence expected of her station. “The evening meal is prepared. Shall I bring it to you?”
I studied her for a long moment. Such an innocent face. Such easy access to my private chambers. The perfect place to begin laying the foundation.
“Come in,” I told her, letting just a trace of my power bleed into the words. Her eyes widened slightly, pupils dilating as the first invisible thread of control wrapped around her mind. “And close the door behind you.”
She obeyed without hesitation.
The game had begun.
