Scales Reversed (19)
The moment I stepped into the inner chamber, a thick, cloying scent of incense wrapped around me like a living thing. It wasn’t the cheap kind peddled in the markets. This was the real deal—rare herbs and exotic spices blended to perfection, the kind that could loosen even the most stubborn tongue or cloud the sharpest mind.
I wrinkled my nose. They really went all out.
The room was dimly lit, heavy curtains drawn across the windows to block out the daylight. In the center sat a low table laden with wine and delicacies, and beyond it, a woman reclined on a silk-covered couch like a painting come to life.
Her name was Yeonhee.
Even in this dim light, her beauty was undeniable. Long, raven-black hair cascaded over her shoulders like ink spilled across snow. Her eyes, sharp and knowing, curved into seductive crescents as they met mine. A single glance from her could make a man forget his own name.
But I wasn’t here to admire the view.
“You’ve come,” she purred, voice like velvet sliding over steel. She gestured lazily toward the cushion opposite her. “Sit. The wine has been waiting for you.”
I offered a polite smile and took my seat. The cushion was softer than it looked—probably stuffed with the finest down. Everything in this room screamed luxury and careful calculation.
“I must apologize for the sudden invitation,” she continued, pouring the wine herself. The liquid glowed like liquid rubies in the lamplight. “But I simply couldn’t wait any longer to meet the man who has turned the court upside down.”
Her fingers brushed mine as she handed me the cup. Deliberate. Calculated.
I accepted it without hesitation and took a small sip. The wine was excellent—rich, fragrant, with just a hint of something… extra. Something that made my tongue tingle and my thoughts slow ever so slightly.
Aphrodisiac. And a strong one at that.
I set the cup down and met her gaze evenly. “You flatter me, Lady Yeonhee. I’m merely a humble servant trying to do his duty to the Emperor.”
She laughed, a low, throaty sound that sent shivers down my spine despite myself. “Humble? You? The man who brought Cao Cao to her knees and made Liu Bei tremble in her boots? Don’t be so modest, Jin Hwan. It doesn’t suit you.”
Her eyes sparkled with amusement—and something darker. Hunger.
I leaned back slightly, studying her. She was beautiful, yes. Dangerously so. But beauty was just another weapon in this world, and I had no intention of letting it pierce my defenses.
“You seem to know a great deal about me,” I said mildly. “I’m afraid I don’t know nearly as much about you.”
“Then allow me to enlighten you.” She rose gracefully from the couch, her silk robes whispering against her skin as she moved. Every step was deliberate, every sway of her hips a carefully crafted invitation. She circled the table until she stood directly behind me, her hands coming to rest lightly on my shoulders.
Her breath was warm against my ear. “I am a woman who knows what she wants. And right now… I want you.”
Her fingers traced lazy patterns across my collarbone. The touch was electric, sending sparks racing across my skin. The incense, the wine, her scent—it was all working together to overwhelm my senses.
But my mind remained crystal clear.

The fog that had been creeping into the edges of my thoughts vanished instantly. The tingling on my tongue faded. Even the heat building in my lower body cooled to a manageable level.
I turned my head slightly, catching her eye. “You’re very direct, Lady Yeonhee. Most women in your position would at least pretend to be subtle.”
She smiled, unfazed. “Subtlety is for those who have time to waste. I prefer results.” Her hands slid lower, fingertips grazing my chest. “And I always get what I want.”
I caught her wrist gently but firmly, stopping her exploration. “Then I’m afraid you’ll be disappointed today.”
Her eyes widened slightly—the first crack in her perfect composure. “Disappointed? That’s not a word I hear often.”
“There’s a first time for everything.” I released her wrist and stood, turning to face her fully. She was close enough that I could see the delicate flush on her cheeks, the way her pupils had dilated with desire. The aphrodisiac was clearly affecting her as well, though she hid it better than most.
“You see,” I continued, voice calm and measured, “I didn’t come here to play your little games. I came because I wanted to see what kind of woman would dare try to seduce the man who holds the Emperor’s ear.”
Her expression shifted. The seductive smile remained, but now there was a calculating glint in her eyes. “And what have you concluded?”
“That you’re dangerous.” I stepped closer, until our bodies were nearly touching. She didn’t retreat. “But not dangerous enough.”
Before she could respond, I reached out and cupped her chin, tilting her face up toward mine. Her breath hitched. For the first time, genuine surprise flickered across her features.
“You wanted me to lose control,” I whispered. “To drink your wine, breathe your incense, and fall into your bed like every other fool you’ve ensnared. But I’m not like them.”
My thumb brushed across her lower lip. It was soft. Trembling.
“I decide when and where and with whom I lose control. Not you. Not anyone.”
I leaned in until our lips were a hair’s breadth apart. Her eyes fluttered half-closed, anticipation written across every line of her body.
Then I pulled back.
“Thank you for the wine,” I said politely, as if we’d simply shared a pleasant afternoon chat. “It was excellent. I’ll be sure to return the favor someday.”
She stared at me, stunned into silence for the first time since I’d entered the room. Her chest rose and fell rapidly, cheeks flushed, lips slightly parted. The perfect picture of frustrated desire.
I bowed slightly and turned toward the door.
“Wait.”
Her voice stopped me just as my hand touched the doorframe. I glanced back.
She had composed herself somewhat, though the fire in her eyes hadn’t dimmed. “You’re the first man who’s ever refused me like this. I won’t forget it.”
I smiled. “I certainly hope not. It would be a shame if you did.”
With that, I left the room, the heavy scent of incense and her lingering presence clinging to my clothes like a second skin.
Only once I was well clear of her residence did I allow myself a small, satisfied smirk.
One down.
Now for the rest of these venomous snakes slithering around the court.
The game had only just begun.
