Shattered Reunions and the Predator's Pursuit
Across the table, an awkward, heavy silence lingered between Yoon Jiyeon and Kim Junho for a while. As the warmth from their takeout lunch boxes began to fade, Jiyeon, who had been poking at her salad, glanced up at Junho with a sly look.
The tips of her ears, once flushed red, had returned to their calm hue. She set down her fork, rested her chin on her hand, and fixed him with eyes brimming with curiosity and mischief.
"Junho, but earlier... what the hell was that awkward situation about?"
She avoided direct words, but it was a blatantly embarrassing question anyone could understand. Junho, shoving rice into his mouth, choked violently on the straight-ball query.
"Kuhk. Cough. Kek."
His face turned beet red as he pounded his chest. Only after gulping down the water Jiyeon casually handed him could he finally catch his breath. In his panic, he forgot even formal titles, blurting out a raw response.
"Ah, noona, sorry. It wasn't like that—it was just my girlfriend calling, and I picked up..."
Junho's excuses tumbled out incoherently. Jiyeon's eyes sparkled with interest. She smirked, one corner of her mouth curling up, and began teasing him even more brazenly.
"Oh my, are you some hormonal teenager? You're in your late twenties and still like this? Just hearing your faraway girlfriend's voice gets you so worked up you can't hold back?"
The sly, playful senior's jab hit home. Junho wanted to crawl into a hole, covering his flushed face with both hands.
"No, noona, it's not like that. It just... happened without me realizing. I must've looked so gross earlier—I'm really sorry, I want to die."
Helpless, he hung his head low. To Jiyeon, his flustered demeanor was endlessly cute and a fresh thrill. A young, healthy male pining for his lover in a distant land, offering pure devotion. She felt a strange conquering urge stir within her.
Junho, who had been berating himself, soon lifted his head and let out a long, heavy sigh.
"Haa."
Even Jiyeon's face, full of playfulness moments ago, took on a serious glint.
"What's wrong, Junho? Aren't things good with your girlfriend? You're getting excited just from her voice, but why sigh so deeply?"
Junho downed the rest of his water in one go and stared blankly at the table.
"Things are great between us. It's just... reality isn't easy. Being so far apart makes it hard to even see her face. Phone calls can't fill that void. So I want to secure a position here somehow and head up to Seoul fast—but it's not as simple as I wish, and it's tough."
A man's raw confession of his incompetence and the hardships of long-distance love. Jiyeon gazed quietly at his weary shoulders. Then, slowly, she reached across the table, clasping his large hand between both of hers.
The soft, smooth warmth of a woman's touch seeped into his skin, traveling through his veins. Startled, Junho looked up to meet her warmest, most affectionate gaze.
"I'll help you, Junho."
Jiyeon's thumb stroked the rough back of his hand slowly, intimately.
"Don't blame yourself too much. You're doing great right now. In this unfamiliar place, adapting while working your bones to dust late every night. It'll all work out, so don't be so impatient."
In the thorough isolation of a foreign land, this was the one saving hand extended. Junho felt a hot surge of emotion rise from deep in his chest at her warm comfort. Unknowingly, he gripped her hand tightly in return.
"Thanks, noona. Seriously, without you, I might've already crumbled here."
His sincere reply. Jiyeon swallowed a victorious smile inside while maintaining her endlessly kind big-sister facade.
"Good, as long as you know. So when you finally return to Seoul in glory, you can't forget me, got it?"
"Of course not. I'll never forget. I'll make sure to repay you properly later."
Their gazes tangled stickily in the air. His guilt and longing for his lover subtly diluted in the comfort of the alluring senior before him.
But the weekend reunion Junho had so desperately vowed to make ended up shattering pitifully against the wall of cruel reality.
Friday afternoon. As the weekend approached, Junho faced a screen of despair while trying to book train tickets to Seoul. Every train and express bus to Seoul was sold out—not a single seat left. Adding insult to injury, an urgent defect issue erupted at the branch, forcing him to stand by in the office all weekend.
In the end, Friday evening, Junho had to call Harin with blood-curdling regret.
And Harin, left alone to face the Seoul weekend. Her rundown studio apartment was filled with a strange stillness and suffocating melancholy.
When she heard Junho couldn't come up, her heart tore in two. The sense of loss from not seeing her lover. And deeper still, the relief coiled within her.
If Junho had come to Seoul, she would have had to drag her defiled body into his arms again, pretending nothing was wrong, acting out false love. For Harin, who lacked the courage to face him directly, this cancellation was a miserable but fortunate escape.
Saturday afternoon. Unable to bear the stifling air of her studio, Harin threw on a coat and stepped out aimlessly. Before she knew it, she found herself on the bustling, glamorous cafe street of Gangnam.
Couples strolling arm-in-arm under the warm sunlight. People laughing and snapping photos of pretty desserts. In that dazzling everyday scene, a profound isolation—as if she alone had been utterly abandoned—crushed her slender shoulders.
"Haa."
Harin shoved her hands into her coat pockets, head bowed, shuffling listlessly along the sidewalk. It was right then, as she tried to forcibly empty her tangled thoughts—that moment.
Beep. Beep.
A short, heavy honk blared from the lane beside her. She turned her head absently, and her heart stopped dead.
Her breath caught, veins freezing in horrific dread. A massive black sedan gliding silently alongside her pace. Through the slowly descending passenger window, a man's face came into sharp view—leaning casually on the wheel, waving leisurely at her.
It was Park Minhyuk.
In the middle of crowded Gangnam on a weekend—not at the office, but on this very street where she'd wandered to soothe her gloom. The sheer improbability shattered Harin's reason.
Her wide eyes shook wildly in shock. Run. That single instinct dominated her brain.
Without looking back, Harin spun toward an alley and bolted. But before her heels could take three steps—
"Where do you think you're going?"
The driver's door flew open roughly. Minhyuk's long, firm arm snatched the hem of her coat mercilessly.
"Ahh! Let go!"
Harin screamed and twisted, but she was like paper against his strength. Ignoring onlookers, Minhyuk wrapped an arm around her waist, yanked open the passenger door, and shoved her inside.
"Get in, Harin."
Slam. The heavy door shut, sealing out all outside noise. The click of Minhyuk locking the doors from the driver's seat echoed chillingly in the confined space.
Harin yanked frantically at the passenger handle, screaming.
"Open it! Open the door! Why are you doing this to me? Were you following me? This is straight-up stalking—a crime!"
Watching her terrified outburst, Minhyuk leaned on the wheel with the most relaxed, gentle smile.
"You're overthinking it. I was just passing by for a personal appointment here—pure coincidence, Harin. Spotting you walking alone in this crowd? A miraculous stroke of luck."
His voice dripped with affection, but his eyes gleamed with thick mockery and obsession for escaping prey.
Whether it was coincidence or calculated stalking, Harin had no way to know. All that mattered was she was trapped again in this devil's sealed cage.
"Don't lie—open it now. I'm getting out."
As she pounded the window in desperation, Minhyuk leaned his upper body toward her sharply.
"Sst. Sit still."
With his icy warning, his body fully overlapped hers. Harin gasped, pressing her back to the seat. His face loomed inches away, that familiar, lethal heavy scent assaulting her senses fiercely.
The mind-numbing, horrific smell. His long arm reached past her waist, slowly pulling the seatbelt across.
Click. The metallic snap of the belt locking sounded like a collar snapping around her slender neck.
Instead of returning to his seat, Minhyuk gently stroked her cheek, locking eyes perfectly with hers.
"You looked so pitiful and depressed walking alone—I picked you up. I'll take you on a drive to totally refresh your mood, so sit quietly."
Arrogant, one-sided declaration. Harin glared at him through tear-filled eyes, biting her lip in injustice.
"Who made me this depressed and miserable? Who turned my life into hell?"
The unwitting murmur of resentment slipped out. At her small outburst, the most lethal, seductive curve drew across Minhyuk's lips.
He lightly gripped her chin, pulling her face to his.
Smack. His lips brushed hers lightly, playfully—then pulled away.
The utterly unexpected timing, the sweetest, most casual intimacy.
"Ah."
Harin's eyes widened hugely, frozen. Her mind flashed white.
Not a violent, forceful kiss—but a natural, affectionate peck, like to a beloved lover.
"What the—?"
She stammered, face flushing, trying to demand answers. But Minhyuk ignored her completely, casually turning back to the driver's seat.
He shifted gears and cut the conversation with a bright voice.
"Alright then, shall we head out for your mood-lifter, Harin?"
With a smooth engine purr, the massive black sedan glided away down the road. Harin stared blankly at the passing scenery outside, her heart pounding madly.
She ought to rage at the devil who shoved her into hell. But feeling her solid defenses melt formlessly from that single light kiss, she retched with disgust and terror at her own corrupt nature crumbling helplessly.
The predator's flawless, inescapable drive hurtled onward into the boundless darkness, carrying them both.
