"Let The Show Begin"
[Light City]
On the East Coast, Light City is the top destination for business and adventure. Its glassy skyscrapers glint in the sunlight, soaring above busy boulevards pulsing with honking taxis and chattering crowds. The briny scent of the waterfront mixes with the aroma of roasting coffee and sizzling street food.
Neon shop signs flash above lines of diners waiting for world-class meals, while far below, the rhythmic slap of buskers' drumbeats echoes across cobblestone squares. All around, laughter and music fill side streets, and a cool breeze carries the distant call of gulls drifting in from the bay.
Whether for work or memories, Light City shines with a constant energy. Suddenly, in the very center of it all, the lively central plaza falls silent.
Digital billboards and neon ads begin to flicker, shutting off one by one. The huge screens, once full of color and sound, go dark, and a heavy silence settles over the plaza.
Sarah, a junior journalist in Light City for her first corporate conference, feels the change wash over her. Murmurs and gasps spread through the crowd. She clutches her work tote tighter, just as rattled as the tourists.
Commuters stop in their tracks. Sarah meets a man's anxious glance, and together they look up at the silent skyscrapers. Shopkeepers step outside, worry clear on their faces, all searching for answers. Sarah tries to steady her breathing and remembers her mother’s advice: stay calm and blend in.
But the voices rising around her make it impossible to stay calm. Some people sound worried, others speak with fear, and everyone seems tense, waiting for what will happen next. Was it just a blackout, or something worse? Sarah remembers the villain headlines her boss warned her about. What could stop everything in the middle of the city?
“Hey, what’s going on!?” A short, stout man with an accent pushes his way to the front, his voice loud and sharp.
“Did anyone else see that? All the ads just died!” A young woman in a tourist t-shirt grips her phone, her eyes darting around.
“Is it a villain attack?” A boy in paint-splattered jeans holding a skateboard speaks up, his voice cracking with both excitement and worry.
“Hey, don’t say that, you dumbass!” His friend snaps back, trying to sound brave, but his voice still shakes.
Bzzt
Bzzt
All the screens that had gone dark suddenly light up, showing a tall figure in dramatic silhouette. He wears a crisp aristocrat’s suit and a polished top hat, his face hidden behind a smooth, white mask. At his side, he holds a sleek cane tipped with a red crystal that catches the neon light.
The figure stands still, calm and in control, while chaos swirls around him. His gloved hands rest on his cane as everyone turns to the screens, falling silent.
The masked figure tips his hat with a graceful gesture. His voice, smooth and commanding, echoes through the plaza’s speakers:
“Good evening, citizens of Light City. I am The Marquis. My name is unfamiliar now, but you will come to remember it in fear. I have arrived to prove that even Light City cannot escape its shadows. Remain calm, listen carefully, and no one will be harmed. The Marquis never breaks a promise.”
The Marquis stands tall in a tailored suit that looks both refined and menacing. His jacket is deep black with sharp lapels edged in crimson silk, and beneath it a blood-red waistcoat gleams faintly. His porcelain-like mask remains expressionless, thin red lines tracing its edges.
“You place your trust in your so-called leaders, but what do you truly know of them? Your mayor hides his misdeeds, Dr. Halden has left patients to suffer, and Sterling Voss would sacrifice thousands for profit. These are your villains, wrapped in respectability.”
“You call these menaces villains, but they lack style, vision, the flair that true greatness demands.”
“So I ask you, Light City: what are great villains?”
“Tonight, I will show you what it means to be unforgettable. Remember this moment, for your city will never be the same again.”
As his words echo, fear spreads through the crowd. A mother pulls her child close. People duck behind benches or press against storefronts. The silence is no longer awe—it is terror.
The screens flicker again. Then the image shifts—Mayor Grayson appears, bound to a chair, pale and sweating. Dr. Halden follows, rigid and trembling. Then Sterling Voss, still defiant, though restrained and exposed.
Light City’s most powerful figures… helpless.
Sarah stands frozen, her heart pounding. Fear grips her—but underneath it, excitement begins to rise. This is the story of a lifetime.
With trembling hands, she raises her phone.
“Oh my god… is that really the mayor? This can’t be happening.”
“Come on… signal—don’t fail me now…”
Alarms blare through Hero Headquarters as monitors flash with images of the plaza. Commander Chen snaps into action.
“Fifteen minutes to extract—move! Trace that signal now!”
Techs scramble as data floods in. No breach. No identity. Nothing.
Kinetica and Paragon enter, both staring at the hostage feed.
“Who is this guy?” Kinetica asks.
“This shouldn’t be possible,” Paragon replies.
“He’s a ghost,” Chen says. “Stay sharp.”
The clock ticks down.
With a snap of the Marquis’s fingers, glowing contracts appear before the hostages, each one pulsing with dark red light.
“Sign, and you will live,” he says calmly. “But everything you are will be stripped away.”
Each contract carries a different cost—truth, loss, ruin.
“Choose.”
Back at HQ, alarms spike again.
“Energy anomaly detected!”
“Location found—sub-basement ballroom beneath the Grand Lucent Hotel.”
“That’s our entry,” Chen orders. “Move in five.”
The Marquis tilts his head slightly.
“Time is ticking… shall we begin?”
The hostages panic, their voices overlapping in desperation—pleading, bargaining, begging.
“Enough.”
His voice silences them instantly.
“Sign… or you will not leave this room alive.”
Their bindings fall away. The contracts glow brighter, hovering before trembling hands.
Meanwhile, in the tunnels below, the heroes advance.
“He’s expecting us,” Kinetica says quietly.
“On my mark,” Paragon replies.
A crimson glow spills from the ballroom doors ahead.
Commander Chen’s voice cuts through comms:
“Go.”
