Blink and You'll Miss It
After safely wrapping up filming for the movie Glamorous Outing, I returned to my life as an ordinary college student, Seo Eun-seong. Of course, calling it "ordinary" was a stretch—the stares I got on campus were still scorching hot. Still, the relaxed vibe of the lecture hall beat the nail-biting tension of the set any day.
"Heyy~ The influencer's here!"
Kim Min-su greeted me with his usual snark the moment I stepped into the classroom. The other classmates nearby shot me curious glances.
"Shut it. Influencer my ass. What, you think I'm hawking yeast or something?"
"Anyway, why'd you skip last class?"
"Oh... Professor hooked me up with a quick gig."
"A gig? What kind?"
"Movie shoot."
My answer made Kim Min-su and the others' eyes bulge.
"A movie? You were in a movie?"
"Yeah. Just a quick face cameo."
Kim Min-su snorted at my casual reply.
"Dude, you go from influencer to pretty boy poster child, and now you're an actor too? What was it, some YouTube web drama? Or a student film?"
Kim Min-su and the classmates couldn't even imagine it. They had no clue the film I'd shot was a blockbuster noir by Chungmuro legend Director Choi Do-hyun. They figured since I'd gotten handsome, I'd probably landed some no-name short film or promo video.
"Eh... something like that."
I was too lazy to explain, so I just shrugged it off.
"Paycheck? How much you snag?"
"Huh? Money?"
I blinked blankly. Come to think of it, no one had mentioned pay. I'd been too busy eating with the director and writer, learning action choreography, and shooting to even sign a contract. Not that it mattered—I'd gone there for fun on their invite and ended up filming on a whim.
"No cash. Did it for free."
"What? You idiot!"
Kim Min-su smacked my back.
"Knew it—those passion-pay scammers! Even rookies deserve gas money. Tsk tsk. Tough break, buddy. Lunch is on me today."
Kim Min-su pitied me like a charity case. I just laughed it off without correcting him. Sure, Director Choi had said he'd take care of it later, but right now, free food from Min-su trumped everything.
That was when it happened.
"Hm."
Creak.
The front door slid open, and Professor Kang Min-cheol entered. The room fell silent in an instant under his signature modernized hanbok and commanding aura.
"Seo Eun-seong. You're here."
"Yes, sir. I am."
"Hm. Good."
Professor Kang peered at me over his glasses, a sly smile tugging at his lips.
"How'd the shoot go?"
"Thanks to you, Professor, it went great."
"Good. Do-hyun couldn't stop raving about you. Said you're the real deal."
The students buzzed at his words. Do-hyun? Who's that?
"Come up front."
I shuffled awkwardly to the podium at his beckoning. He placed a hand on my shoulder and addressed the class.
"Seo Eun-seong here appeared in my disciple Director Choi Do-hyun's new film, Glamorous Outing."
"....?"
Silence blanketed the room for a beat.
Then, one second later—
"Whoa... no way!"
"Choi Do-hyun? That ten-million-ticket guy?"
The students' jaws dropped.
"Insane? It wasn't some web drama?"
Kim Min-su, who'd pegged me as a passion-pay sucker, looked like his chin might hit the floor.
"When the film releases, everyone go see it. Learn what real acting is. What presence means."
"Haha...?"
My face burned under the professor's hype. Whoa, Professor... aren't you overselling it? I'm just a one-minute extra.
The second class ended, Kim Min-su and the others swarmed me.
"Dude! Seo Eun-seong! You psycho—why didn't you say it was Choi Do-hyun?!"
"Whoa, you're a legit celeb now? Gimme your autograph early!"
I waved them off amid the fuss.
"Misunderstanding. I'm not lead, not supporting."
"Then what?"
"Just an extra. Passing pedestrian level? Probably under a minute. Blink and you'll miss it."
I downplayed it as much as possible. It was mostly true, anyway.
"Oh... gotcha."
Kim Min-su's face relaxed.
"Phew, scared me. Thought you were supporting at least."
True to best-friend form, he patted his chest in relief.
"Good thing. If you went full actor, I'd die of jealousy. Still, extra in a Choi Do-hyun flick counts as cred. Nice work. And stay humble as you blow up, yeah? Seo Eun-seong?"
He slung an arm around me, back to seeing me as his lucky buddy.
"Only you got my back, Kim Min-su."
I chuckled too. An extra was an extra, after all.
The day before the premiere.
"Who is it?"
Ring ring.
My phone buzzed. Caller ID: Director Choi Do-hyun.
"Hello? Director?"
—Yeah. Eun-seong. Doing well? You know tomorrow's the release, right?
"Of course. Wishing you a massive hit."
—Listen, we've got a press screening and stage greeting at Yongsan tomorrow. I'd love for you to join.
"Me? Stage greeting?"
I blurted in shock. Weren't those for leads? Did a bit part like me belong?
"Thanks, Director, but... that's too big for me. With the lead seniors there, I'd just be a nuisance."
—Haha. So humble. You're a full-fledged actor in our film.
"I'll treasure the thought. I'll cheer quietly from the seats—already booked my ticket."
He chuckled ruefully at my polite refusal.
—Alright, if that's your call, I won't push. But you will come see it, right?
"Absolutely."
I hung up as the front door clicked open.
"I'm home~"
Ha-rin bounded in after her schedule. Usually she'd flop on the couch from exhaustion, but her eyes sparkled today.
"Oppa! I cleared my schedule tomorrow!"
"Huh? Why? Something up?"
"What do you mean? It's your movie release! Gotta see it!"
She declared it solemnly. I couldn't help but laugh.
"You're busy—watch it on VOD later."
"No way! Your big-screen debut! Theater or bust. On the huge screen!"
She clenched her fist.
"And... it's not just me."
"Who else?"
I glanced around. Then familiar faces peeked from behind her.
"We're going too! Bear Doll!"
"Eun-seong oppa, I booked tickets too."
Choi Eun-jin unnie and Lee Ah-hyun. These snack fiends... when did they assemble?
"What about your schedules?"
"Just morning stuff, then we dip. Secret from manager oppa~"
Eun-jin unnie winked.
"Seriously?"
Top girl group Siren's center and two members rejigging schedules for my bit-part brother's film. Grateful, but worried.
"Your faces are too famous—chaos at the theater."
"Don't sweat it, oppa. We master disguise."
Ha-rin fetched a bag from her room and rummaged out bucket hats, black masks, horn-rimmed glasses, etc.
"This? Undetectable. Perfect."
The three giggled, swapping hats and checking masks like high school girls prepping for a field trip.
"...Touching. Thanks."
My chest warmed. This is family... having your back. A measly minute onscreen, but to them, I was the star.
D-day dawned.
Yongsan multiplex. Weekend crowds packed the place.
"Okay, super quiet and careful entering, got it?"
At my earnest plea, we infiltrated like spies: hats pulled low, masks up—four shady figures. Celeb vibes screamed, but folks pegged us as movie buddies. Lucky break.
"Bear Doll? Popcorn? Dried squid?"
"Eun-seong oppa, orange juice for me."
"You gluttons..."
Still gluttons. I shook my head, sneaking back with snacks.
"Got 'em. Let's go."
Bags of goodies in hand, we slipped into the auditorium. Prime center seats.
Lights dimmed. Ads rolled.
"Nervous... I'm shaking..."
Ha-rin gripped my hand tight from beside me.
"I might not survive this movie... Ha-rin unnie..."
Ah-hyun clutched her popcorn tub on my other side.
"Bear Doll, when do you show?"
Eun-jin unnie already stared holes through the screen.
The film began. Glamorous Outing. Epic noir set in Macau. Stellar turns by senior actors Kim Byung-hoon and Kim Na-yeon, killer action, tight plot. Riveting stuff.
I sank into viewer mode too.
But 30 minutes passed. An hour. No me.
"Oppa... when? You don't think... they cut you, right?"
Ha-rin whispered anxiously. Eun-jin unnie and Ah-hyun fidgeted.
I felt a twinge but played cool.
"Wait. If cut, Director wouldn't insist I come. And I said it's short."
I popped popcorn casually.
Then—the scene shifted to a glitzy Macau club. Heroine Kim Na-yeon cornered by thugs. Life-or-death.
Thump thump thump. Heartbeat bass kicked in. Back door creaked open.
A man emerged from shadow. Black suit. 188cm tall silhouette. Face gradually lit by red glow.
"....!"
The theater froze.
"Whoa... who's that guy?"
"Insanely hot..."
Gasps rippled through seats. Hands paused mid-popcorn. Whispers spread.
Onscreen me wasn't the me I knew. Cold, lonely, dangerous. Overwhelming presence just standing there.
Then—action.
Crack! Boom!
No lines. But I moved like a beast. Crisp, heavy hits dismantling thugs. Rough arms shielding Kim Na-yeon.
Final glance back mid-escape. Eyes brimming with unspoken story. Raw instinct to live... to protect.
About one minute. Short, if you think about it.
But...
"....."
Audiences forgot to breathe.
Scene changed, I vanished—murmurs erupted.
"Who's that actor?"
"That aura... so cool..."
"Newbie? Hot as hell."
"No more? That's it?"
Regret and curiosity buzzed everywhere.
One minute. In that blink, I'd branded "Seo Eun-seong, actor" into their minds.
"Isn't that Seo Eun-seong?"
"Who?"
"Seo Ha-rin's brother? The fat-to-fox glow-up guy?"
"Nah, doesn't look like it."
"Then who?"
"No way people don't know a face that fine."
Opinions clashed. Onscreen me had shocked them that much.
"Oppa..."
Ha-rin stared, mouth agape. Eyes wide with awe above her mask.
"Our oppa... was that cool?"
"Whoa... Bear Doll? What are you? Total badass actor vibe."
Eun-jin unnie gawked at the screen.
"Eun-seong oppa... so cool..."
Ah-hyun teared up in awe.
But the biggest shock? Me.
That's... me?
Giant-screen me. Not just slimmed-down Seo Eun-seong. A true actor.
Were my eyes that deep? Moves that desperate?
What the hell?
Heart pounded. Nepal agony. Wanting to protect Ha-rin. Set euphoria. All exploding onscreen.
Chills raced head to toe. Electric thrill.
This is it.
Why people act. Why they obsess over it.
Started to brag to Ha-rin. But now—a new dream lodged in my heart.
Want more.
Longer scenes, bigger stories—through my face, body.
Actor. That word became my life's goal.
Credits rolled post-film.
[Bodyguard 1 - Seo Eun-seong]
My name lit the screen.
"That's him! Seo Eun-seong!"
"No way? Ha-rin's actual bro?"
"Seo Eun-seong! Huge!"
Theater erupted in chatter. Nearly everyone stayed glued, dying to ID the mystery bodyguard.
Finally revealed.
"Gotta bounce before they spot you, oppa."
Ha-rin grabbed my hand—trembling faintly.
"....."
We slipped out wordlessly.
But we all knew. Tonight, something massive had begun.
