Chapter 113: Class Suspension
Muen followed the familiar Plane Tree Path all the way back to his dormitory.
In just a few short days, the dormitory building that had been destroyed during the great battle had already been restored to its original state. Not only was there not a single trace of combat left, but the building's tiles even featured new patterns.
It was a little pink pig, and it was actually quite cute.
Marveling at how magic truly could accomplish anything, Muen stepped into the dormitory building.
The dormitory matron was sitting in her small room by the entrance, filing her nails as usual. When she saw Muen, she called out to him.
"Hey, hey, you there—young Muen."
"Hmm?"
Muen turned around, flashing his customary sunny smile. "Is something the matter, Teacher?"
"Your room key."
The matron’s cheeks flushed slightly as she handed Muen a key.
"Your room was destroyed before, so the door and everything else are brand new. The key is new, too."
"Oh, thank you."
Muen offered his thanks, only to see the matron’s face turn even redder. After a brief pause, she suddenly turned her head away and said shyly, "Young Muen... back then... you were really cool!"
"..."
Muen was speechless.
This was unbelievable.
He had pulled off a cool stunt, yet he hadn't managed to trick any cute young girls; instead, he’d attracted a bunch of middle-aged women and gay men.
Had he unconsciously leveled up his charm in the wrong direction?
Muen shook his head helplessly, ignored the middle-aged woman’s bashful expression, and quickly headed upstairs.
The dormitory room that had been wrecked by those muscular men had been restored to its original state, and even his daily necessities had been placed back in their original positions.
As a noble from a well-to-do family, Muen usually kept his valuables in his personal storage device. Therefore, he didn't have to worry about the repair crew touching his things and causing an embarrassing situation like the one Ryan had faced.
After looking around and confirming there were no issues, Muen went into the bathroom to take a shower first, washing away the scent of antiseptic he had brought back from the infirmary.
Then, feeling refreshed, he threw himself into his studies.
Now that his Senior had shown him the ropes, Muen was capable of a certain degree of review and preview even without a teacher.
After all, what Teacher Mela required wasn't just catching up with the curriculum—he actually had to pass.
The Magic Basic Theory exam in a month would undoubtedly consist mostly of second-year material.
However, through his Senior’s explanations, Muen understood that Magic Basic Theory was a subject that built upon itself very strictly. If he didn't thoroughly grasp the earlier knowledge points, he would be completely lost later on.
Therefore, Muen's most important task now was to quickly finish off all the first-year content.
During this process, all other aspects of his training could be put on hold, including the nightly slaughter within the Black Book.
For this one month, everything had to make way for this single subject.
*
The next day.
Without giving Muen much time to rest, the Academy's classes began.
The first class was the Martial Arts class Muen was familiar with.
However, before the class started, Muen sought out Professor Kade.
"You want to apply for a temporary class suspension?"
Kade looked at Muen, somewhat surprised.
As a magic academy, St. Mary's naturally offered more than just dry theoretical courses and rigid lectures; there were also many practical field studies and club research activities.
Since these courses often lasted a long time and would likely clash with regular classes, the Class Suspension System had been established.
Students could apply for a suspension from the teacher in charge of a course. As long as the reason was legitimate and the teacher agreed, they could temporarily skip the class without losing credits.
Of course, they still had to take the exams.
However, since practical courses and research activities were generally undertaken by upperclassmen, Professor Kade rarely encountered a second-year student applying for a suspension.
Especially when the applicant was Muen, who used to never take his classes seriously.
It felt like his motives were a bit impure.
Is this kid thinking of skipping class to go pick up girls?
At the thought of this, the still-single Professor Kade’s gaze instantly became sharp. "And your reason is?"
"Well, that..."
Muen scratched his head and gave a sheepish smile. "Professor Kade, you know that I only scored three points on my Magic Theory exam last semester, right?"
"I know. That matter has already become a legend among the faculty. Along with your other feat of taking a whole year to learn the Illumination Spell, they are known as the Two Great Wonders of the education world."
What the hell are the 'Two Great Wonders'? Can that even become an academy ghost story?
Muen suppressed a retort and continued, "...So, I want to temporarily focus my energy on studying Magic Basic Theory. I want to make up for that course first."
"In other words..."
Professor Kade’s gaze narrowed as he said solemnly, "You want to abandon the path of a martial artist for the sake of magic?"
"Eh? No, I just—"
"You can't do that, Muen Campbell!"
Before Muen could explain, Professor Kade slammed a hand onto Muen’s shoulder. His eyes were wide as he shouted, "I've seen plenty of people like you! Just because you suffered a little bit of hardship in martial arts, you run off to study magic, which is relatively sweat-free. In the end, you don't learn magic, and your martial arts are neglected. You'll end up a useless waste who can do nothing but go home and inherit the family estate! Muen Campbell, is that the kind of person you want to be?"
"No, no, no, I'm not giving up on martial arts. It's just that for a certain reason, I have to catch up on Magic Basic Theory first."
Muen winced as he rubbed his aching shoulder and gave a bitter smile. "Besides, Professor Kade, you've seen it yourself. My current strength as a martial artist is among the top tier of the entire second year. Taking a temporary break shouldn't have much of an impact."
"It's precisely because of your talent in martial arts that you absolutely cannot give up!"
Professor Kade seemed convinced that Muen wanted to abandon the path of a martial artist. He shook Muen’s shoulders, looking pained. "Look at you! You only went home for the holidays and were trained by Duke Campbell for two months, yet you've made such massive progress. As long as you continue seriously down this path, I can't guarantee how great your future achievements will be, but at the very least, your future is promising!
"Now think about your magic level. Three points in Magic Basic Theory—is that a score a normal person can get? My three-year-old niece could probably score higher by just scribbling on the paper! With that brain of yours, you're simply not born to study magic!"
"..."
Muen’s mouth twitched.
Although he knew Professor Kade meant well, why did those words make his heart ache?
Regardless.
"Professor Kade, although what you say makes some sense and I might indeed not be cut out for magic..."
Muen sighed, grabbed Kade’s hands to remove them from his shoulders, and then stared into his eyes, speaking with absolute seriousness:
"But—
"I have my own reasons. For the next month, I must focus all my energy on Magic Basic Theory.
"So, whether you agree or not, Professor Kade, I won't be attending Martial Arts class for the time being."
"—As for the credits, if the Campbell family is willing to donate a bit more to the school fund, I think Dean Pink Bear would be more than happy to grant me a few."
