The territory they had barely carved out around the gymnasium took shape faster than expected.
Ju-ha checked on the injured, changed bandages, and especially rejoiced at having reclaimed the bathrooms.
Meanwhile, the others ventured outside, stacking barricades along the corridors and stairwells surrounding the gym while securing empty classrooms one by one.
After Ha-neul finished inspecting the last empty classroom at the end of the hallway, she slowly looked around inside. The desks and chairs had all been removed for barricades, yet traces of someone having frantically shoved them aside still lingered. The windows were shut, and the chalkboard still bore half-erased marks from a lesson interrupted mid-sentence.
She leaned her shoulder against the doorframe and gazed inward before speaking lightly.
"We can leave this room empty for now. It feels wasteful to use it only for storage. We could use it for conversations we can't have inside the gym, or as a place to catch our breath for a moment."
Chae-won immediately understood what she meant. It wasn't simply about gaining another meeting room or spare space.
It was a room slightly apart from the gym, where closing the door would shield them from outside eyes, yet close enough to retreat back to the gym in an emergency.
Ha-neul didn't need to explain why she wanted such a room or why she had been so aggressive about expanding their territory. Chae-won already knew.
Eun-jae also grasped the words and the meaning beneath them, though her expression remained unchanged. She merely glanced between Ha-neul and Chae-won before turning her gaze back down the hallway. Pretending not to know was better for the fragile community that had only just grasped hope. Eun-ah, on the other hand, caught half the undercurrent but chose not to react, muttering instead, "At least now we can live a little more like human beings."
When night fell, the silence inside the gymnasium felt different from the night before. Yesterday it had been woven entirely from fear, chaos, and the desperate need to hold the line at a single door. Tonight, a faint new sensation had begun to mix in. Some students were thinking about tomorrow for the first time. Others felt a small measure of relief knowing that, within their territory at least, they could move without fear of being bitten by zombies.
At the same time, everyone was exhausted. Hope had arrived, but the physical and mental cost of creating it had been enormous.
Building barricades without making a sound had been grueling. They had worked with painstaking care, terrified that even the smallest noise might draw zombies.
Night watch that evening fell to Ha-neul and Chae-won. Instead of pacing inside the gym, they chose to recheck the newly secured classroom area. Just because a space had been cleared during the day did not mean it was automatically safe at night. They had not yet pushed the barricades forward, and zombies could still approach from nearby, so regular checks were necessary.
The two slipped quietly out of the gym and walked slowly down the secured corridor. The path had grown familiar from multiple daytime trips, yet the same hallway felt like an entirely different place after dark. Beneath ceilings barely touched by light, dried bloodstains on the floor looked like black blots in the gloom, and the gaps beneath classroom doors and stair railings seemed far deeper shadows than they had during the day. Still, there were no zombies. They had personally hunted through this section only hours earlier, so at least this floor retained a measure of calm.
Ha-neul slowly opened one classroom door she had noticed earlier. The hinges gave a faint creak, but nothing louder. She stepped inside, closed the door, checked that the lock still worked with her fingertips, then walked farther in. Chae-won followed.
At first, they truly did discuss the watch. How they felt about today's hunt, how the athletic field was still too dangerous to risk, how tomorrow they might push down the stairs and claim the classrooms at the far end of the connecting corridor.
The content of their conversation remained strictly practical, yet their tone gradually shifted back to how they had spoken when they were alone together before.
Chae-won checked the windows and door at the back of the classroom once more, then turned to Ha-neul.
"Things are going better than I expected. Of course, luck has played a big part, and we don't exactly have numbers on our side, but it's completely different from when we were holed up in just the gym. I never thought we'd secure this much territory so quickly."
Ha-neul moved to the window and perched on the sill with one hip. She smiled faintly at Chae-won's words.
"It's because of you, teacher. I'm too focused on fighting. Without you holding everything together and giving direction, it would have taken much longer."
As she spoke, Ha-neul became aware that her body had not yet fully released the tension of combat. The lingering heat that came after gripping a sword for too long and repeating short, intense fights. Today it was especially strong.
Her fingertips trembled ever so slightly. Her heart still raced as though it had not yet accepted that the danger was over. A thin layer of heat clung to the nape of her neck and along her spine, while her arms felt heavy yet her mind remained sharp. She had felt this sensation after kendo tournaments and during periods of intense training.
Chae-won noticed the state Ha-neul was in from her breathing and the faint tremor in her hands.
"Are you all right? Your face is flushed, and your hands still look tense."
After fighting so much today, the backlash had probably caught up with her.
Ha-neul opened and closed the hand that had gripped her sword, then slowly steadied her breathing.
"I'm fine. This happens sometimes. I'm used to it."
Chae-won took a step closer at those words. The corridor outside was quiet, and the classroom, empty except for the two of them, held a heavier silence than the gym. In that space, Ha-neul's breathing no longer belonged to the hunter who had been clearing corridors hours earlier.
Chae-won was not entirely unfamiliar with the sensation herself. After pushing her body to its limits in training or real combat and then suddenly stopping, the drop in adrenaline often left her nerves even more sensitive. That sensory overload could lead to anxiety or emptiness, but sometimes it stirred unexpected impulses as well.
Ha-neul touched the delicate atmosphere with a playful remark.
"By the way, Eun-jae was staring at you an awful lot today. I've noticed her looking your way before, but today it was really obvious. Even without saying anything, her eyes kept drifting toward you."
Chae-won let out a soft laugh.
"Jealous? The fact that you're noticing things like that even now means your head is clearer than I thought."
Ha-neul did not deny it. Instead, she pushed away from the windowsill and stepped toward Chae-won.
"Of course I'm jealous. You're my woman, after all."
In the past, she would never have said such a thing near a classroom. The taboo of teacher and student, the taboo of woman and woman, the habit of pretending nothing existed between them in front of others had always stood between them. But now the old world was gone. Only in its ruins could they finally be honest. A world had arrived where they could cut and take whatever they desired.
Chae-won did not push Ha-neul away after hearing that possessive confession. Instead, her gaze softened with sensuality as she looked up at her, and the corner of her mouth lifted slightly.
"Saying something like that right here is cheating."
"Don't you like it?"
"No."
No further explanation was needed between them.

Ha-neul was the first to lift Chae-won's chin with her fingertips. Then she pressed their lips together. Both knew they could not make loud sounds, so the moment their lips touched, they instinctively grew more cautious. They brushed lightly, parted, then overlapped again for a little longer. Yet the restraint only sharpened their senses.
Unable to breathe deeply, forced to keep their voices low, even swallowing moans, every touch of lips, tongue, and fingertips felt several times more sensitive than usual. Ha-neul's hand slid slowly along Chae-won's waist over her clothes, and Chae-won leaned lightly against the edge of a desk by the window, accepting the touch.
When their lips met again, the kiss was deeper than before. Ha-neul pressed in slowly, and Chae-won no longer remained passive. The hand cupping the back of Ha-neul's neck tightened, while her other hand clutched the hem of Ha-neul's shirt and pulled her closer. The classroom was so quiet that the rustle of fabric and the sound of restrained breathing seemed loud. So they explored each other even more silently.
Desire rose quickly, but the way they released it had to remain quiet until the end. Ha-neul bit deeper into Chae-won's lips and whispered low, as if swallowing her breath.
"We spent the whole day in the same space, yet the moment we're alone, I want you even more. The same hands that were swinging a sword and cutting down zombies just moments ago are now touching your waist. My head feels like it's burning up."
Chae-won had not quite caught her breath either, but she answered clearly.
"Look at what we did today. We fought all day just to survive, clenching our teeth and moving between corpses while staying tense. Then we felt safe, even if only for a moment. It's not strange at all that the desire we've been suppressing is rising now. …Besides, when you come at me so openly, how could I not catch fire too?"
Chae-won's shy confession was permission to do what they both wanted. A deep smile curved Ha-neul's lips.
