Chapter 38
Chirp, chirp—.
I can hear a lark singing somewhere.
I can't let my guard down. This is the Demon Beast Forest, a place teeming with magical beasts and monsters that easily defy imagination.
That lark's song is, ridiculously enough, a lure used by some massive, unknown creature to attract prey. Conversely, if you hear a loud noise in the Demon Beast Forest, nine times out of ten, it's a relatively weak creature trying to drive out a predator that has entered its territory.
The only other possibility is the overwhelming howl of a truly massive monster. If you're caught in that, you're doomed. Just kneel reverently and accept your death. How could anyone beat some lunatic who has the guts to scream and annoy the Five Kings?
Of course, within the next 500 years, I plan to hunt one of the Five Kings and become even stronger than in my previous life to prepare for the future war.
Anyway.
"Wow, you're looking pretty scruffy. How many days has it been since you last washed? Hmm, though do wolves even wash?"
"Grrr...."
"What! It's no big deal! You're not going to die from not washing for a day or two! Of course, I value cleanliness very much, but you can't expect a demon and a beast to be on the same level, right? Still, let's wash up once we find a lake or something!"
"Bark! Bark-bark! Grrrr...!"
"Why the sudden barking? Is it because I'm too loud? Still, please stop barking! A wolf that snaps at its owner is a bad wolf!"
"Bark-bark-bark! Bark-bark! Demon! Die!"
"Oh boy, no manners at all. Well, you can slowly learn the etiquette between master and servant from me! Now! Let's shake hands as a sign of working hard together!"
I reached out toward the Wolf Girl trapped in the iron bar cage, slipping my hand through the cold bars.
Her reaction was violent.
"Grrr! Bark-bark-bark-bark! Stay away! Rawr!"
Snap-!
Perhaps startled by the sudden intrusion, the Wolf Girl tried to bite my hand. I quickly pulled my hand back before she could land a hit.
Phew, she's definitely not obedient. How did Lilith turn such a wild thing into an emotionless machine?
...Actually, the method is simple. You just beat them all day long. Then starve them, beat them again, beat them if they don't listen, and beat them whenever they're in sight or get on your nerves.
Then they either commit suicide or wear down while enduring it. This Wolf Girl might look fragile, but she is of royal blood. There's no way she'd choose suicide.
Of course, I won't choose that method. That might have been the way in the past, but I was reborn after receiving the baptism of love from the Saint.
I need to make the Wolf King my servant, and a relationship built only on violence without loyalty isn't safe. I wouldn't be able to trust her with my back.
"Alright, if that's how you want to play it, I have no choice."
"Grrr...."
"First, let's start by introducing ourselves. We'll get closer over time. You understand me, right? What's your name?"
"Kyak! Demon! Get away! Bark!"
"Is your name Kyak? Hmm, okay. Kyak, I look forward to working with you!"
"Bark-bark! It's not Kyak! Stop calling me something weird!"
"It's not? Then what's your real name? I won't know unless you tell me."
I know her as 'Wolf King Rua'.
But that probably isn't her real name. Lilith likely gave her that name for convenience.
"Grrr...!"
Seeing how she bares her teeth without even recognizing her owner, I doubt she'll tell me easily.
"Oops, come to think of it, I haven't told you the most important part yet. Alright, let's settle this first."
I reached deep into the sack I had tucked away. I shoved my arm in up to my shoulder and rummaged around to find an item.
A long stick touched my fingertips. I gripped it between my index and middle fingers and pulled my hand out of the sack.
Swish-!
What came out was a magic wand about three spans long. A magic tool specifically for magicians, also known as a Magic Stick.
I waved the magic wand in front of the Wolf Girl's eyes.
The Wolf Girl was extremely wary of the long wand she had never seen before. It was understandable. She must have been beaten mercilessly in the auction house with clubs that looked similar to this wand.
I reached back into the sack and pulled out something else. Holding raw meat dripping with blood in the hand opposite the wand, I waved that in front of her as well.
"...! Grrr...."
Perhaps due to her instincts, saliva pooled at the corners of the Wolf Girl's mouth. However, as if she didn't want to show weakness to me, she kept her teeth half-bared. Her growling grew slightly weaker.
Looking at her, I wore a smirk and spoke.
"We're going to do something fun now!"
"Grrr...."
"Every time you do something wrong, I'll give your forehead a whack with the magic wand! Instead, if you listen to me, I'll give you a reward! This meat, right here!"
"Bark!? Bark, bark-bark! Nonsense! Who do you think you are!"
"Haha, you don't like that? Don't worry! You don't have a choice!"
The most common method for training a wild beast: the carrot and the stick.
People say that when training a dog, a carrot is enough. That it's best to train them by giving rewards when they obey and withholding them when they don't.
I agree with that. Why? Because they're dogs! Dogs naturally follow humans!
However, the wolf before me is fundamentally different from a dog. To train this utterly ferocious beast, both sweet rewards and severe punishments must be applied thoroughly.
Plus, I'll add a bit of the 'love' the Saint taught me. Though the Saint's love and my love might be quite different.
"Now, I'll give the first command. Little one! What is your name?"
"Kyak...! Bark-bark! How dare you give orders to a king!"
"This is a command, so you're not supposed to disobey. Do you still not get it?"
"Bark! Bark-bark-bark... yelp!"
Crack-!
I struck the Wolf Girl's forehead with the magic wand. Not enough to break a bone, but enough to hurt as if her head were splitting.
"Yelp! Yelp! Yelping!"
"Alright, I'll ask again. Little one! What is your name?"
"Whimper, whimper, whimper... bark!"
Crack-!
"Yelp! Whining...."
"Hmm, let me ask again. Little one! What is your name?"
"Whimper... Grrr."
Crack-!
"Yelp! Whine! Whimper!"
Maybe a triple strike—hitting the same spot over and over—was too much. The Wolf King clutched her forehead, rolling on the prison floor in agony.
I eventually have to let her out, but first, she needs to complete this first command.
"You're only hurting yourself by resisting. Little one! What is your name?"
"Grrr... I-I won't give in...!"
"Give in? Is 'Give In' your name? No way!"
Crack-!
"Yelp-! Whimper! Whine-whine!"
"Tell me your name properly! Little one! What is your name?"
"Uuuuu...."
The key here is the power struggle.
Just like when I was teasing Lilith earlier, I have to show her that I will never be defeated and will never back down.
Furthermore, I must make her realize that no matter how she reacts, the result will never change, and in the end, she's the only one who gets hurt.
Through this, I will break her stubbornness and pride.
That is the primary goal of this training.
Crack-!
"Ack! Why—why are you hitting me! Bark!"
"Because you're over the time limit. Hmm, perhaps you'd prefer not to be hit?"
"Bark-bark! Of course I do!"
"I see! Then why aren't you answering properly? I thought you were the type who enjoyed being hit for staying quiet! What was the word? A masochist? A maso-wolf?"
"...! Bullshit! Stop talking bullshit!"
"Wow! A wolf telling me not to talk like a dog. As if you're not from the same family."
"Bark-bark! Don't confuse the two! Don't compare a mere dog to a wolf!"
"What are you talking about, you beastly demi-human. If you want that kind of respect, just tell me your name! Then I'll recognize you as a clever wolf!"
Crack-!
"Bark! Yelp! Yelp!"
"Little one! What is your name?"
Crack-!
"Yelp-yelp! Yelp!"
"Little one! What is your name?"
Crack-!
"Yelp! Yelp-yelp...! Yelp...!"
"Little one! What is your name?"
Crack-!
"Yelp...! Whimper, whiiine...."
"Little one! What is your name?"
Crack-!
"Whimper... whimper... whiiine...."
"Little one! What is your name?"
The sounds of resistance fade. However, in inverse proportion to the growling, the malice flickering in the Wolf King's eyes burns even brighter.
I'll remove that malice slowly; for now.
"Whimper... it hurts...."
First, it's about getting the first button fastened correctly.
She's holding out quite a while, but that's fine. It was within my expectations. It's only natural for her to grit her teeth and endure.
The one thing I must not forget is that I cannot get tired. Even if I do, I must never show it. I will strictly adhere to these two rules.
Crack-!
"Whimper! Whine-whine! Whiiine...."
"Little one."
"It hurts... stop... whimper...."
"What is your name?"
I ask softly, a bright, innocent smile playing on my lips.
Pain is loathsome.
Living creatures cannot endure loathing.
When the loathing persists, the creature breaks.
"Bad demon...."
Fear clouds the blue eyes of the Wolf King as she looks at me. Her perked-up ears droop down, and her tail curls tightly between her legs.
The tattered rags draped over the Wolf King tremble violently. In response, I held up my magic wand.
"S-stop it! Bark!"
"Little one, be a good girl and listen. What is your name?"
Crack-!
"Yelp! Aru! I'm Aru! That's my name!"
"Oh! Now you're listening! Good girl! Aru! You did so, so well! You're the smartest, prettiest, most handsome, coolest, and swiftest wolf in the world! Just keep doing that from now on!"
"Whimper... it hurts... it stings...."
"Oh dear, does it hurt? As your owner, I'd love to empathize with your pain! It's just such a shame that I can't!"
So her real name was the opposite of Rua. I didn't think of that.
"That was a great answer! Just follow my commands faithfully like you just did! Oh, right, since you've obeyed a command, I should give you a reward, shouldn't I?"
"Whine... I'll kill you... you wicked demon...."
Expressing my genuine joy, I hid the magic wand behind my back and held out the raw meat.
Good job, magic wand. I'll be putting you to good use in the future. For now, rest.
The appetizing raw meat, dripping with blood and glistening with fat, is placed neatly before Aru. Could Aru, with the blood of a wolf, possibly refuse this?
Sniff, sniff—.
Aru's nose twitched as she caught the scent of the fresh meat.
Come to think of it, how do wolf beastmen have human-shaped noses but maintain a wolf's sense of smell? It's a curious point.
"Bark! I won't eat it!"
"What? You won't? A wolf refusing meat?"
"Enemy! Trash! Demon! Bark-bark!"
"Aha, so you're saying you won't eat meat given by an enemy-trash-demon like me? But why am I your enemy? Though I can understand the 'trash demon' part."
"Enemy! Demon! Bark-bark-bark!"
Gosh, so noisy. Does this mutt's throat never get sore? I can't exactly perform vocal cord surgery on her.
"Now, let's think. Aru, how did you end up captured at the auction house?"
"Bark-bark! The demons killed everyone! Those evil bastards!"
"Exactly! Demons are evil bastards! They're trashy, parasitic scum who deserve a divine punishment!"
When someone finds a target to hate, I join in and hate with them. I've used this often; establishing common ground and redirecting resentment is a mandatory part of handling others.
"Exactly! Bark!"
"But, Aru. What would have happened if I hadn't bought you there?"
"Bark? I don't know!"
"Think about it! You're already dim, Aru, so you have to actually think for your brain to work!"
"Bark, bark? I'm not dim!"
"What do you think those wicked, evil, trashy demons you mentioned would have done after buying you! They might have tortured you in all sorts of uneducational ways! Or they might have played with you, saying they found a wolf toy!"
"Grrr...! I'm not a toy!"
"Right! Aru isn't a toy! But that's how demons might have treated you! In worst-case scenarios, you could've been used as materials for those researching alchemy or dark magic! Or in the absolute worst case, you could've been skinned and stuffed as a trophy in someone's house! Doesn't that sound horrifying just imagining it?"
"S-stop talking nonsense! Bark-bark!"
"That's just how vicious demons are! You know that too, Aru!"
"True! Demons are bad!"
Oh, the common ground is forming. As expected, nothing beats shock therapy.
"Bark-bark! But you're a demon too!"
The question I was waiting for finally came. Pathetic wolf brat. She's being tossed around by the superior eloquence of a demon.
"But I'm not tormenting you! Therefore, I'm different from those utterly wicked demons!"
"You hit me! Grrr...!"
"That was a rod of love! Aru, have you never been hit by your mom or dad? Didn't you get hit when you made a mistake?"
"Whimper... I-I have! I got hit on the calves if I lost the prey!"
"That's exactly it! Why do you think your parents hit you? It was all because they loved you! I'm the same! As Aru's owner, I hit you because I love you!"
Aru's round face went blank. I tapped the meat, which was dripping with juices, and let my lips move.
"Try to remember! When Aru listened to her parents, they praised her, right? I'm praising you right now! Like this, giving you a reward! It's all because I love Aru!"
Yes.
This is it.
The way to truly tame Aru.
Love.
I don't doubt its effectiveness. I've already experienced it personally.
The Saint reformed me, who was the worst kind of scum in the Demon Realm. Even if I don't fully align with the direction she intended, she showed me a faithful light. That is a magnificent achievement, enough to surprise even me.
Something that even Shine Stella, the greatest hero of the continent, failed at—.
Anyway, I intend to tame Aru just as the Saint tamed me.
Just as I became the Saint's servant, I will make Aru my servant.
Just as I follow the Saint, I will make Aru follow me.
"Hehe."
"Don't laugh! You're scary!"
"......What? I'm scary?"
"Bark-bark! You're scary!"
No, I'm treating her as benevolently as the Saint did, so why is she scared? The word 'scary' doesn't fit the Saint at all, even as a joke.
Hmm, now that I think about it, the Saint used to punish me by hugging me. I'm disciplining Aru with a magic wand. Putting myself in Aru's shoes, it's understandable. A demon she's never seen before is pounding on her forehead.
It's a bit sad that Aru doesn't seem to recognize my love.
"And! Why are you my captain!"
"What? Aru, what are you talking about?"
"Grrr...! I'm not an object! I'm a king! Bark!"
"Oh my! Aru! You're saying things that break my heart!"
Regardless, for now, let's just focus on taming Aru. If I lose my focus, things that should work won't.
"Bark-bark-bark-bark! Why should I!"
"What do you mean? Do you have any idea how much money I spent on you! I spent five hundred thousand gold! Do you even know what that's worth?"
"Bark?"
Aru tilted her head at my expression of heartfelt injustice. She seemed to have forgotten the pain in her forehead already.
Looking closer, the red stick-like marks on her forehead had completely faded. Truly a beastman; a prime example of phenomenal regeneration.
"With five hundred thousand gold! I could have bought fifty thousand wolves like you! I spent that kind of money just to buy Aru alone! How can you even say that? That I'm not your owner?"
"Bark, bark? Something you can't eat... has value?"
"Tsk! You dim-witted beast! I bought you and you don't even know gratitude! This is why one should listen to the ancient sages! They said never to take in a black-haired beast!"
"Who told you to buy me? You did it yourself! Bark-bark!"
"If you weren't going to treat me as your owner, you should have stopped me! It's all your fault! You stayed quiet when I was buying you! And now that I've spent all my savings, you say I'm not even your owner! Good grief, I'm speechless!"
There is one thing to understand here: wolves are a species where the chain of command and hierarchy are absolute and clear. In other words, while the authority of the title 'owner' is great, becoming one is very difficult. Unlike dogs.
There is the simple method of fighting Aru, winning, and declaring himself owner, but honestly, I have no confidence in winning. Aru is a beastman, not a magical beast, so the Saint's cross wouldn't work.
Above all, I came to the Demon Beast Forest to train; why waste my energy on Aru?
That's why I chose 'love,' a training method based on trust. I can't handle Aru with brute force right now. In the perilous Demon Beast Forest, I need a support system I can trust with my back.
Of course, if I expected her to treat me as her owner immediately, that would be greedy. I don't even expect that much.
Giving loyalty easily means she could just as easily be swayed by someone else. Just as a carefully cultivated fruit is the sweetest, I will tame Aru slowly. Only then will she be loyal only to me.
"Fine! Bad Aru can't even understand her owner's heart! Just eat the meat, quickly!"
Pretending to be angry, I spoke sharply and pointed to the meat I had placed before her.
Aru stared at it silently, then turned her head and curled up in the corner of the cage.
"Aru, aren't you going to eat? This is very fresh."
"Grrr... wicked demon. Won't listen to a demon."
"Oh, so you're not calling me an enemy anymore! I thought Aru was incapable of learning! This owner is so happy!"
"No owner! Owners are dogs! Wolves have captains!"
"Hmm? Aha, so you've been refusing because I called myself 'owner'? Wolves have captains, dogs have owners?"
Geez, she's quite picky for a beast. Fine, I'll play along.
"Alright! From now on, I'm Aru's captain! But you know nothing changes, right?"
"Grrrrr...! I am a king! The King of Wolves! Kings have no captains! Bark!"
"Whatever! Hmm, fine! I won't force you if you don't want to eat! But if you feel like eating, be sure to do so! It's meat I prepared with all my heart!"
"Grrr...! I won't!"
Aru bared her milk teeth clumsily, remaining highly wary of me. Determined to keep her word, she settled in a corner far from the meat.
How long could she last?
There is plenty of time.
The relaxed whistle of a demon flows through the cold iron bars. The lonely heart of the young wolf girl burns with anxiety.
*****
It hurts.
It hurts.
It hurts.
It hurts much more than when Dad hit me.
Wicked and vicious demons.
I hope they all just die.
It's cold.
The lonely mountain is cold.
I'm hungry.
I'm so hungry.
I want to eat anything.
Things I usually hated, I feel like I could eat them now.
But there is nothing here.
Not even the blades of grass Mom said I had to eat occasionally.
I'm hungry.
There is meat.
I'm hungry.
I shouldn't eat it.
A wicked demon gave it to me.
I've been fooled before.
Dad ate meat given by a demon and foamed at the mouth.
I can't be fooled again.
I'm hungry.
My vision is blurring.
I am a king, the King of Wolves.
I mustn't be cowardly.
I cannot have a captain.
That's why I can't eat it.
It hurts.
It's cold.
I'm hungry....
