The Joker's Wonder Goal
Thud—!
[Grayson Lee!!!! An unbelievable overhead kick goal! It looked like it tore the net clean apart!]
Unlike the excited commentary box, a sudden silence gripped Stade Vélodrome. The roar of Marseille's home fans—famous even in France for their passion and ferocity—vanished in an instant. But the quiet lasted only a moment. Soon, the away section's explosive cheers mixed with the home fans' ear-splitting jeers, shaking the stadium.
Looking back on Grayson's football career, one thing had always mattered most to him: style. No matter what anyone said, his number had to be the ace's 7. Even when drenched in sweat during matches, his hair stayed perfectly slicked back with pomade, fixed in place like a blade. And now he had pulled off the most spectacular skill in football—an overhead kick. Even to himself, it was a perfect picture. A heart-bursting thrill coursed through every nerve, and he couldn't stay calm. Grayson sprinted full speed toward the corner flag, then slid hard across the grass on his knees.
“Yeah! That's it!”
At the end of his sliding run, he threw both arms wide and tilted his head back, soaking in the Stade Vélodrome floodlights and the home fans' abuse with a grin that split his face. The right winger, looking half-crazed, charged over and leapt onto his back with a wild roar.
“Insane, Grayson! That actually went in?! For real?”
Grayson pulled his teammates into a rough embrace and finally burst into a bright laugh. The team's mood, crushed under Marseille's pressure all half, had flipped completely with that single play.
At the same moment, football communities around the world were on the verge of exploding.
1–1. The flow of the second half began to swing wildly.
Marseille's bench was in full emergency mode. They had believed Toulouse was under complete control throughout the first half. Yet a single variable—Grayson Lee, brought on as a substitute—had wiped out their hard-earned advantage in an instant.
The Marseille manager stormed to the edge of the technical area, irritably running a hand through his hair as he shouted at his defense.
“Mark him with two men! Don't let the ball reach number 7 easily! Hey! Get physical—make it rough!”
Medical tests and media reports had made it clear that Grayson Lee's current physical condition was far from normal. So for Marseille, there was only one solution: use Ligue 1's trademark rough physical pressure and psychological warfare to force out his physical limits.
When play resumed, Marseille's pressing became markedly more aggressive. Before the ball could even reach Grayson's feet, their veteran defensive midfielder blatantly grabbed his shirt and shouldered into him. The smell of torn-up grass and heavy breathing filled his ears.
“How dare this washed-up bastard…!”
In the past, he would have responded with a retaliatory tackle to collect cards, but now he simply smirked and brushed it off. Against the player shoving into him, Grayson dropped his center of gravity low. With a clever hand battle, he slipped under the opponent's armpit, lifted his upper body, and rolled the ball away with his toe into open space. While the defensive midfielder stumbled off balance, Grayson slipped a pass to the central midfielder bursting between the defensive lines.
[He shrugs it off again! The rough pressure isn't working at all!]
[Marseille's players are getting desperate! Meanwhile, Toulouse has found their confidence!]
Once Grayson secured possession and anchored the attack, Toulouse's entire rhythm changed. Frustrated, Marseille grew even rougher. In the 27th minute of the second half, their fullback launched a blatant studs-up challenge at Grayson's ankle from the flank—a dangerous attempt that sent a dull scraping sound across the pitch.
But Grayson had already read the tackle. He flicked the ball up, hopped lightly over it, then used the defender's overcommitted slide to fall dramatically while looking straight at the referee.
The one skill he had mastered even better than in his prime was diving. Having been hacked down countless times throughout his career, he knew exactly when to go down to draw a card. His pained expression after the perfectly timed fall was enough to convince the referee.
The whistle blew sharply, and the Marseille fullback was shown a yellow card.
The clock now read the 39th minute of the second half. Marseille had pushed their line dangerously high to avoid the shame of a home draw when a clearance from inside Toulouse's box was launched forward in one long ball. Toulouse's attacking midfielder collected it near the halfway line and was brought down by a rough challenge.
The whistle sounded again, and a perfect free-kick opportunity was awarded just outside the penalty area.
[Ah, Toulouse wins a free kick in a dangerous position! Direct shot possible?]
The distance to goal was about 23 meters. Just as Bouard, Toulouse's usual set-piece taker, reached for the ball, a hand shot out and snatched it first. Grayson tucked the ball under his arm and strode forward. Bouard stepped in front of him, looking bewildered.
“Lee, you know free kicks are my job. The manager said—”
The words died in Bouard's throat. Grayson simply stared at him, ball still under his arm, his eyes radiating unshakable confidence that needed no words—especially after the wonder goal he had just scored.
Bouard glanced toward the bench. Merah was already making an O-shape with his fingers and nodding. The message was clear: give it to Grayson while he's in the zone.
“Fine, whatever. Just take it.”
Bouard let out a helpless laugh and raised both hands. It was an easy concession—Grayson had shown excellent free-kick accuracy in training. As Bouard stepped back, Grayson finally allowed a small smirk and carefully placed the ball on the grass.
Grayson took a deep breath and stepped back five paces, then two to his left. Sweat trickled from his hair down to his chin. The whistle blew—!
Grayson charged forward without hesitation. Planting his standing foot firmly, his right foot whipped around the bottom of the ball.
Thwack—!
The ball left his foot, curled cleverly over the Marseille wall, and traced a beautiful arc. Marseille's goalkeeper flung himself desperately, but his fingertips met only air. The ball dropped sharply and nestled into the top-right corner, violently shaking the net.
Thud—!
[Goal! Grayson Lee!!! The comeback goal! A fantastic trajectory that silences the Marseille home fans!]
[Ah, that gave me chills! The wall jumped, but he cleared their height completely and it dropped in. It's a trajectory you can't stop even if you know it's coming!]
The away section at Stade Vélodrome erupted in madness. Grayson turned toward the corner flag, ready to sprint again, a grin on his face.
But the joy was short-lived. Less than ten minutes remained, including stoppage time. Having conceded the lead, Marseille poured forward in a frenzy. In the 48th minute of the second half, with only a minute left, Marseille launched one final counter. Their winger collected a clearance from Toulouse's center-back and charged toward the empty Toulouse half at terrifying speed. Just as he shaped to cross into the box—
“Huh? Grayson?!”
A shocked cry burst from the Toulouse defense. The man who should have been resting up front was somehow already sprinting past the halfway line toward the corner flag.
Grayson launched himself at the Marseille winger's feet, throwing his body into a sliding tackle no one who knew his old self would have imagined.
Thud—!
A dull impact echoed across the pitch. The ball ricocheted off his foot and rolled far out of play. Marseille's final chance was gone. As Grayson lay panting on the grass, his kit covered in mud and grass, football communities worldwide fell into collective shock.
Gasping for breath on the grass, Grayson barely managed to push himself up as the final whistle pierced the air.
