An Unexpected Turn
One... two... three... four... fifteen... thirty... thirty-seven...
Zombies poured out of the villa endlessly, like a surging tide.
Outside the iron gate, a dense horde had already gathered around the Lincoln, piling up like human pyramids as they lunged at the car. It wouldn't be long before the Lincoln vanished completely beneath the swarm.
"Can't wait any longer!"
Watching the zombies gradually engulf the car, Xiao Yi grabbed the torch he'd prepared earlier, lit it with the kerosene lighter, and hurled it hard toward the fuel tank.
By now, zombies blanketed the vehicle on all sides. Though his aim was spot-on, the torch still smashed into a few that were clawing at the car, bouncing lightly aside.
The torch failed to ignite the leaking gasoline!
The packed zombies surged toward the car. The torch was on the verge of being trampled out under their feet.
"Damn it!" Xiao Yi cursed in panic.
An accident after all!
The gasoline had spilled everywhere, but it lay a good half-meter from the torch!
And both the gasoline and the torch were about to be buried under the ever-growing mass of zombies!
If he couldn't ignite the fuel soon, the horde would completely envelop the car, making it all but impossible to set it ablaze!
Inside the villa, more zombies streamed toward the front yard, slamming wildly against the iron gate. A massive, burly one pounded furiously—if the gate weren't so sturdy, it would have been shoved flat already.
"No time to fetch another torch now!"
Sweat beaded on Xiao Yi's forehead, trickling down in rivulets.
Without hesitation, he aimed his gun at the spilled gasoline on the ground.
"Gotta take the gamble!"
Grinding his teeth, Xiao Yi squeezed the trigger at the fuel.
Bang!
Bang!
Bang!
Three shots rang out, bullets striking true on the gasoline-soaked concrete.
Sparks flew from the friction of bullet on cement.
But those feeble flickers weren't enough to light the gasoline.
Instead, under the zombies' trampling feet, even the visible pools of fuel thinned out.
The torch on the ground had long since been extinguished by the stomping horde, leaving only faint embers that could wink out any second.
"Should've prepared better!" Xiao Yi berated himself inwardly, his heart in his throat.
If the car kept revving like that, more zombies would swarm and surround the entire estate.
The pile-up outside the gate could crest the fence and climb over at any moment!
What now?
Forcing down his rising panic, Xiao Yi steadied himself. As he watched the zombies start shoving and tearing at each other, a spark of inspiration flashed in his eyes.
In the crush and tussle, several zombies were shoved onto the gasoline-slick concrete by those behind them.
One had its head nearly flattened, its legs lost somewhere, dragging itself forward with a single desperate hand.
That zombie's body glistened with gasoline.
Eyes on the kerosene lighter in his hand, Xiao Yi sent up a silent prayer, flicked it alight, and tossed it at the zombie.
The lighter landed squarely on the creature's head. Its hair ignited in a whoosh, but the lighter tumbled into the zombie pile and was snuffed out instantly.
"Damn it!" Xiao Yi slammed his fist in frustration.
The zombie was drenched in gasoline everywhere—except its head.
Though its hair burned unnaturally, it still couldn't ignite the fuel on the ground!
If even the lighter wouldn't do it, Xiao Yi was out of options!
Then, fortune turned.
These zombies seemed to fear fire intensely. The one-handed creature flailed its lone arm in terror toward its flaming head, as if trying to smother the blaze.
And that hand was coated in gasoline.
The instant it touched down, flames leaped to its withered arm, racing up to engulf its torso.
Its gasoline-soaked clothes went up like tinder.
In moments, roaring fire consumed the zombie whole.
Even nearby zombies caught sparks to their clothing.
The frenzied horde, clustered tightly, recoiled in howling panic from the blaze.
Chaos erupted among them, clearing a gap near the car's fuel tank.
The first burning zombie rolled straight into the gasoline puddle by the car. Flames met fuel—and erupted.
A colossal inferno shot skyward, igniting every zombie around it!
