Chapter 16: The Eerie Mansion
A flash of light streaked by, and Xiao Yi's figure reappeared in the post-apocalyptic world!
Opening his eyes, Xiao Yi glanced around. He was standing at the entrance to a grand villa not far from the one where he'd first appeared.
From his current position, he could see the original villa in the distance, with dozens of zombies still wandering aimlessly. The massive horde from before had dispersed across the streets. Everywhere he looked, zombies shambled without purpose.
He checked his watch: still the 3rd, 1:17 p.m. While five hours had passed in the second world, less than an hour—barely half—had elapsed here.
Gazing at the villa that had once been his but was now occupied by the Tom Cruise couple, Xiao Yi's eyes grew colder and colder.
"Roar!!~~~"
"Grrgh~~~"
"Ugh~~ ugh ugh~~~"
Xiao Yi's arrival immediately drew the attention of the nearby wandering zombies. Those shambling along the road not far away sniffed the air and slowly converged on his position.
He sized up the situation roughly. From here to the previous villa was about a hundred meters, with two or three hundred zombies in between.
Outside the nearby woods, a large group of zombies was slowly retreating into the trees.
Charging through now wouldn't just mean breaking past the blockade on the road—it might also draw back the zombies that had started to withdraw.
A gentleman takes revenge after ten years. Xiao Yi wasn't the reckless, impulsive type.
It was high noon, the sun blazing fiercely. If he waited a bit longer, most of these zombies should retreat.
Then he could charge in for revenge much more safely!
For now, he needed a secure spot to wait quietly.
Glancing at the lavish, spacious villa behind him, Xiao Yi gripped his spear and slowly backed into its courtyard.
This was a luxurious vacation villa. The surrounding walls were solid concrete, about three meters high, and the grounds were packed with cameras and alarms. Too bad there was no power now—the devices were useless.
This estate-like mansion must have been a rich man's getaway. The front yard featured elegant landscaping and a small fountain.
Since the apocalypse hit with the main gate open, a dozen or so zombies now roamed the front yard.
Slipping cautiously into the yard, Xiao Yi tried to close the massive iron gate. But it was electric—without power, it was nearly impossible to budge by hand.
Plus, a Lincoln was jammed in the doorway. Shutting it with his current strength was out of the question.
"Roar!~~"
With an angry bellow, a zombie in security guard clothes burst ferociously from the guard booth, lunging straight at Xiao Yi.
Thanks to the system, Xiao Yi noticed his reaction speed and physical abilities had improved noticeably without him even realizing it.
As the zombie pounced, Xiao Yi stayed calm. He thrust his spear forward, piercing its skull dead-on.
The noise alerted the other zombies in the yard. The dozen shambling aimlessly turned mechanically, then shambled toward him with roars.
The few in security uniforms were clearly more agile than the rest.
The one Xiao Yi had just killed was like that, and the other two in security gear were too.
After spearing two more that blocked his path, Xiao Yi dashed toward the villa.
The main door wasn't shut, just ajar. Blood, flesh, and bones littered the ground, walkways, and even the fountain.
Clearly, this place had hosted a zombie feast!
Everyone inside the villa was probably dead!
Click! Xiao Yi slammed the villa's front door shut behind him, blocking the pursuing zombies outside.
Without lights, the well-sealed villa felt dim. Sunlight filtered through stained glass onto the opulent hall, but the bloodstains on walls and floors, mingled with the stench of rotting gore in the air, filled the place with an eerie vibe.
It looked like a major battle and slaughter had gone down here. The hall was a wreck, littered with zombie corpses—some in suits, some in bikinis, others even in U.S. Navy SEAL uniforms. Just from their outfits, everything screamed weird and unusual.
Xiao Yi also spotted signs of gunfire and bomb blasts. He wasn't sure if there were still zombies inside the villa!
Ding-a-ling...
Suddenly, the sound of metal hitting the floor rang out, echoing strangely through the empty hall.
Xiao Yi jerked his head up. The noise came from somewhere upstairs.
"Could there be survivors up there?"
