My Servants Are Future Legends
I had a lot to do over the next month.
First, to live like a decent human being in this mansion, I needed to hire some servants.
Money was the one thing I had in abundance, so finding people wouldn't be hard. The real question was who I should hire.
But that was actually simpler than it seemed.
I just had to recruit the people who were famous for their sheer competence in the original novel.
"Theresia."
"Yes, Master."
"You can just call me 'Sir' instead of 'Master.'"
"Yes, Sir."
"Hmm. You really are no fun."
"I will take that as a compliment."
Theresia was excellent at paperwork and intellectual tasks, but she was absolutely hopeless when it came to physical labor.
I had once asked her to clean, only for a miracle to occur where the room somehow became even dirtier. As for her cooking... well, it was better left unspoken.
In any case, I narrowed down the servants I needed to hire into three main categories, totaling four people.
First, a chef.
I had to prevent another disaster like today, where I had to survive on biscuits.
Next, about two caretakers who knew how to manage a building.
Maids or butlers would do.
And finally, someone to handle miscellaneous chores.
A handyman, so to speak.
Although she was terrible at physical labor, Theresia was clearly suited for administrative tasks. I sent her to the employment guild in Anhelm to handle the recruitment.
When Theresia returned around evening, she handed me a document.
"I have compiled a list of candidates who would be suitable for the mansion."
"Hmm."
The moment I received the document and scanned it, a few names immediately caught my eye.
Maribel Queenston.
Natalia Borovicka.
Celine de Valmont.
Katarina Dragan.
As soon as I checked off these four names with my fountain pen, Theresia spoke up.
"They are all women."
"Is that strange?"
"Yes, Sir. You seem like a beast in heat."
"I don't think that's something Leon Eisen, a man famous for his gentlemanly manners, deserves to hear."
"But it is the truth, is it not?"
"Hmm."
I glared at Theresia and said,
"Have I ever laid a single finger on you?"
"...No, you haven't."
"Then I believe my name is cleared."
"I have nothing more to say."
"Tell the guild we are hiring these four immediately."
"Yes, Sir."
As soon as Theresia left for the employment guild again, I tapped the document with the tip of my fountain pen.
All four of them were major figures in the latter half of the original novel.
Maribel Queenston was destined to become the leader of a massive merchant guild.
Natalia Borovicka would eventually paralyze half of the Empire's intelligence network.
Celine de Valmont was a key commander of the Eper Independence Army, who had utterly crushed the Imperial Army before I was sent to suppress them.
And Katarina Dragan was the leader of the Lishumark Independence Army.
I had no idea why they were all gathered in Anhelm right now, but I figured it was best to secure them first.
Honestly, if the rebellion were to fail just because these four weren't in it, then it deserved to fail.
Besides, I could afford to be this relaxed because the true protagonist of the rebellion wasn't any of these four anyway.
I lounged around smoking cigarettes until eleven at night, waiting for Theresia.
Theresia finally returned, drenched in sweat, and gave her report.
"They have agreed to come for interviews tomorrow morning."
"Good work. Go wash up and get some sleep."
"Yes, Sir."
With my business concluded, I jumped into bed.
I wasn't particularly tired, but the high-end bed was incredibly plush, and I fell asleep almost instantly.
The next morning.
At dawn, even before the four candidates arrived for their interviews, the Minister of War paid a visit to my mansion.
I quickly washed my face and opened the front gate to let her in.
I led her to the dining room and offered her some biscuits and milk. She stared at me with a look of utter despair.
"I haven't hired any servants yet, you see. I plan to interview and hire them today."
"I am glad to hear that, General."
"I told you, I'm not a general anymore."
"But you will always be my general..."
She grabbed my hand, practically begging.
"Please, won't you reconsider your decision?"
"I've left the military. I just want to live a comfortable life now."
"The Empire is still unstable. It has been less than ten years since the late Emperor unified the continent. If a rebellion breaks out, the Empire will..."
"Ulysian can handle it himself."
That was my honest thought.
I wanted to see just how far that arrogant bastard Ulysian could go on his own.
Hearing words that bordered on treason against the imperial family, the Minister of War turned pale.
"In that case, I shall take my leave..."
"Safe travels."
She wiped away her tears and left.
"Yawn."
After sending her off, I took a bath and changed into comfortable clothes. By then, it was already nine o'clock.
I was killing time reading a novel in my bedroom when Theresia walked in.
"The four applicants are waiting in the dining room."
"Okay."
I headed to the dining room just as I was, in my casual clothes.
The moment I opened the door, four beautiful girls turned to look at me simultaneously.
As I sat at the head of the table, Theresia took a seat at the opposite end and pulled out her documents.
Since it was a ten-seater dining table, she wasn't too far away.
I also pulled out a notebook I had prepared beforehand and picked up a pen.
Then, I wrote down their names.
1. Maribel Queenston
2. Natalia Borovicka
3. Celine de Valmont
4. Katarina Dragan
Looking at the four of them, I said,
"Please introduce yourselves. Let me know which position you are applying for as well."
"Ah, yes!"
Celine de Valmont, looking quite cheerful, was the first to speak.
"I'm Celine de Valmont, from the former Eper Empire! I applied for the building manager position!"
The others began their introductions as well.
"Katarina Dragan. From the former Lishumark Kingdom. I applied to be a bodyguard and handywoman."
"Maribel Queenston. From the former Fayros Empire. I applied to be your chef!"
"Natalia Borovicka. From the former Kasantrov Kingdom. I applied for the building manager position."
As I scanned their faces, their nervousness was palpable.
Knowing they were all destined for greatness, I didn't think much of it.
I only wondered why such talented individuals were gathered in Anhelm right now.
"I happen to have a decent eye for people."
At my words, all four of them nodded in unison.
Only Theresia tilted her head slightly in doubt.
I'll give you a flick on the forehead later.
"Therefore, you are all hired."
"Sir? Shouldn't we conduct a more in-depth interview?"
"Theresia, shut your mouth."
"...Yes, Sir."
The four of them bowed in their own ways, repeatedly expressing their gratitude.
Clap, clap—
As I clapped my hands, the dining room fell silent.
"Theresia, you prepared the uniforms, right?"
"Yes."
"Go change into them. Your duties begin today."
Since I couldn't watch them change, I left the guiding to Theresia.
For the record, Theresia had also discharged alongside me, so she was strictly a civilian now.
When they returned after changing, their roles were clearly defined.
Maribel was the chef.
Natalia was the butler, and Celine was the maid.
And Katarina, dressed in a suit, was my bodyguard and handywoman.
"Natalia, Celine, start by cleaning the mansion. Do either of you know how to use magic?"
Celine raised her hand and called out,
"I can use basic magic!"
"And Miss Natalia?"
"...I can as well."
That was a lie.
Celine was a high mage who had nearly reached the 7th circle, and Natalia was definitely at least a 6th-circle mage.
But I just smiled, playing along.
"Great. Please make this mansion spotless as soon as possible. I asked someone to do it before, and oh my, the house somehow got even dirtier."
"..."
Theresia glared at me, but I ignored her and whistled.
"Miss Maribel, please prepare lunch. There are plenty of ingredients. Someone bought a ton of them claiming they would cook, but they only ended up making atrocious dishes."
"Understood!"
"..."
Theresia looked ready to murder me.
Ignoring her, I looked at Katarina instead.
"Miss Katarina... shall we have a spar in the meantime? What is your main weapon?"
"A spear."
"Excellent. Let's head to the backyard."
Before the four of them could head to their respective posts, Theresia stopped them.
"Your wages will be paid starting today, and room and board will be provided at the mansion. Is that acceptable?"
The three of them, excluding Katarina, nodded.
Maribel headed to the kitchen, while Natalia and Celine went out to the hallway.
I instructed Theresia to bring my sword and a spear, then made my way to the backyard.
"Since you're from the Lishumark Kingdom, I assume you're also quite skilled in horsemanship and archery."
"I can do both."
"Ah, I'll speak casually, alright? Since I'm your employer now."
"I do not mind."
Katarina replied bluntly.
But the moment she took the spear Theresia brought, she smiled brightly like a child who had just found a new toy.
"You must really like fighting."
"Yes."
"Let's begin right away."
At my words, Katarina glared at me with murderous intent and charged forward, spear in hand.
Hmm.
To be fair, I suppose it couldn't be helped, considering the massive role I played in the fall of the Lishumark Kingdom.
But that was what the original Leon Eisen did, and I wasn't him.
It had nothing to do with me.
With a swift strike of my sword, I sent her spear flying into the air and brought my blade to her throat.
"Your movements are too large. But you pass."
I smiled and offered her a hand.
She took it and pulled herself up.
"As expected of the Nicator's Shield..."
"Ah, right. I did have a nickname like that."
Handing the sword and spear back to Theresia, I headed back to the dining room.
The six of us, including Theresia and myself, sat down to eat.
It was delicious.
"Maribel, you pass."
"Yes!"
I walked down the mansion's hallway.
I checked the state of the various rooms.
The magic stone lamps shone brighter, and the building was noticeably cleaner.
"I like it. You can't even compare this to Theresia's work."
"Sir, would you care to spar with me as well?"
"I decline."
After teasing Theresia, I assigned rooms to the four of them.
They all smiled brightly, clearly pleased.
None of them could probably even imagine what would happen in just a month's time.
I had already prevented the future where they would join the rebel forces.
So, for now...
I decided to enjoy the peace.
Because even a month from now, I wasn't going to do a single thing.
