I realized that fact back in the mists of my distant childhood.
Truth be told, I didn't mind much. Because I had my dad and grandma.
I didn't have any cruel friends teasing me for being an orphan, and with Grandma stepping in for Mom, I grew up without feeling any great sense of lack.
Even so, there were times I'd think how nice it would be to have a mother.
The prime examples were graduation and entrance ceremonies.
All my friends had both parents show up, but for me, only Dad came in place of my ailing grandma.
Those were the moments when the mother I'd never even met felt achingly missed.
But now I know. That even without a mother, just having a father or grandmother was quite a stroke of luck.
