Too Close to Home
The theater was already dark.
Yuzuki glanced around at the crowd before quietly making her way forward. She kept her footsteps soft, hid her nervous breathing, and settled into the assigned seat beside Yuto.
One armrest between them.
Yuzuki slowly drew in a breath and straightened her back. A strange sensation, as if her breath had caught in her chest.
In the darkness, Yuto’s body heat seeped toward her like the air from the next seat.
His leg rested close to the side of her knee, and the hem of her skirt occasionally drifted in that direction.
Every faint breath, every flicker of tension in her fingertips.
He had already been at the center of far deeper, more intimate sensations many times before.
The memory of their heartbeats and warmth intertwining inside the cockpit still lingered somewhere inside her body.
Yet the sensation she faced now in this darkness felt entirely different.
The accidental brush of fabric.
The backs of hands that nearly overlapped by chance.
Breaths that happened to fall into the same rhythm.
Unlike Coupling, it was her heart that trembled first.
Soon the screen flickered, and the first scene appeared.
A small room. A darkened interior. Dim lighting.
A breath leaked out from somewhere.
Short, thin, trembling in rhythm.
As the screen slowly brightened—
the female protagonist’s wrist appeared as she clutched the blanket on the bed.
Her body moved subtly beneath the thin t-shirt, a suggestive silhouette.
Her breathing grew thinner, and her fingertips twitched cautiously under the covers.
Yuzuki’s eyes widened instantly.
It was too sudden. To begin with a scene like this, the first shock hitting her completely unprepared.
Her shoulders trembled. Strength surged into her legs, knees pressing together.
An unfamiliar air caught in her throat for a moment, and cold sweat slid down her spine.
Just what kind of movie were they watching?
Yuzuki reflexively inhaled, but the air felt too hot, digging into her skin with a somehow dirty heat.
And the moment the woman on screen turned her head, the light grazed her forehead and chin, revealing the silhouette.
Yuzuki’s breath stopped completely.
The hairstyle was identical.
Bright blonde hair tied on both sides, gently covering the ears before curving down past the shoulders.
A twin-tail silhouette that looked exactly like Yuzuki herself.
It resembled her so closely it didn’t feel like mere coincidence.
And when that woman
—Again… thinking of my brother…
whispered in a low, heated voice,
Yuzuki unconsciously closed her eyes.
Heat surged into her cheeks. Cold sweat bloomed across her palms.
The feeling of being exposed. The most secret emotion she had hidden away was now playing out defenselessly on the screen in this darkness.
But what shocked her more was the flow that followed.
Behind the closed door of his little sister’s room, a man stood listening.
Inside the room, short moans that seemed about to break and the rustling friction of sheets continued.
The man didn’t move. Yet his fingertips slowly tightened on the doorknob.
His expression was hidden, but tension clung to his shoulders.
And the woman’s voice, unaware of his presence, kept flowing from within the room.
—Brother… no… people are watching right now… why do you keep… doing that…
On screen, the woman’s fingertips clutched the blanket tightly. She swallowed her breath and collapsed.
As if speaking her own delusion, her gaze drifted somewhere into the dark void. Deep in her eyes burned a hot, flickering longing.
At that moment Yuzuki drew a small breath and swallowed hard without thinking.
Her lips trembled slightly. After hesitating, she carefully leaned toward Yuto and whispered.
“Th-the movie… it’s… really… something…”
After speaking, she stole a glance at Yuto’s face.
He too looked flustered, head slightly lowered, eyes avoiding hers.
That expression made her heart pound harder. Face burning red, Yuzuki quickly turned away.
The movie gradually unfolded as the little sister’s hidden feelings for her brother rose to the surface and the brother’s gaze began to change once he noticed.
Each scene was sticky with entangled emotion. Sometimes too explicit for siblings to sit side by side and watch without embarrassment.
Small misunderstandings, societal judgment, the outer shell of morality.
Those things tried to cover the feelings, but the desire that could not be suppressed grew clearer, and the moments of crossing the line drew nearer.
At first she had only meant to kill time, but at some point Yuzuki found herself pulled into the screen.
No, not pulled in—secretly dragged under while holding her breath.
Though it was only a movie, they eventually chose to accept each other, and the boldness of it made Yuzuki feel herself shrinking.
Before she knew it the film was racing toward its emotional peak.
Having confirmed each other’s feelings, the siblings no longer hid or pushed away.
Fingertips overlapped, lips met, eyes collided in one breathless scene after another.
All of it was clumsy and cautious, yet at the same time a continuous surge of desire that would inevitably cross the line.
Then at last the door to the room where the two were embracing opened, and the parents’ gazes cut the scene short.
Silence. Rage. Reproach. And separation.
Time passed. The brother became engaged to someone else, and the wedding day arrived.
Among the guests, in the groom’s waiting room. A man in a suit stood silently steadying his breath before the mirror.
The door opened quietly.
The sister, neither wearing a white dress nor offering congratulations, took one step, then another, toward him.
Without a word she pressed her lips to his.
It was a sudden, shocking scene.
For a man about to be married, to have his sister kiss him in such an absurd way as a final farewell.
But what was even more shocking came next.
—If this feeling is a sin… then I’ll live as a sinner.
Silence.
On screen the man closed his eyes for a moment and breathed in.
He pressed his lips together as if biting them. The emotion trembling behind his eyelids slowly surfaced.
The camera captured his eyes in close-up.
Regret, lingering attachment, suppressed feelings—all mixed together, yet only a final resolve to let go remained.
—Why are you saying that now…
The words fell with painful clarity,
and in that instant no defense or silence remained between them.
Yuzuki forgot to breathe as she watched the scene.
Her breath sank deep. Her heartbeat thundered in her ears.
Her fingertips trembled faintly as they overlapped on her lap. Her eyelids slowly lowered, pressed down by emotion.
Eventually the movie quietly moved toward its conclusion with the wedding scene that had finally begun.
In calm music the groom stood on the dais while the bride in a white veil entered slowly. As applause of blessing flowed and the venue quietly brightened—
the camera captured a figure sitting in the back corner.
Her clothes were disheveled, several shirt buttons undone, underwear strap slipped slightly below one shoulder.
The hem of her skirt lay heavily across her thighs, unarranged. Wrinkles slanted at her waist as if a hand had brushed there.
Her loosened hair flowed wetly over her cheeks and nape. Her lips were slightly parted on one side, as if they had just been crushed by someone else’s.
All those traces quietly proved the time the two had shared in secret moments before.
She watched the ceremony in silence, eyes revealing no emotion.
Those eyes were neither smiling nor crying.
Only the stillness of someone who had quietly crossed the final line remained on her face.
.....
When the movie ended and the lights came on in the theater, Yuzuki could not lift her face.
She kept wondering what kind of film they had just watched.
After a long silence, Yuto spoke first.
“…Shall we go?”
“…Yeah.”
After leaving the theater, no words passed between them.
It was not that there were no words, but an atmosphere in which no words could be spoken.
They never once properly met each other’s eyes, simply walking shoulder to shoulder.
Their footsteps were strangely quiet. Only the noise of the street barely filled the space between them.
It was interesting.
That scene was really memorable.
They could not bring themselves to say such things.
The movie was too deep to dismiss with “it was interesting,”
and even recalling the posture and emotions with which they had watched it side by side felt unbearably embarrassing.
It was as if the air that had flowed between them in the darkened theater still clung to their backs.
They arrived home without exchanging a single word the entire way.
When they opened the front door, familiar darkness and silence greeted them first.
Yuto went ahead and took off his shoes. Yuzuki followed him inside.
It happened the moment she bent her knees to remove her own shoes. Yuzuki suddenly felt an inexplicable, strange sensation.
If they simply went to their separate rooms like this,
if they turned their backs with faces that said nothing had happened,
…something would become too distant.
Even without words, without reading expressions.
Something had definitely built up between them throughout the day. If they covered it with silence as if ignoring it, she had the premonition they would never cross that line again.
Yuzuki paused, slowly lifting her head.
Yuto had already turned his back and was walking away.
His back carried a quiet determination not to waver anymore.
Like someone trying to end something, a calm but solid distance rested on his shoulders.
She instinctively understood that determination was meant to keep them apart.
At that moment Yuzuki’s breath trembled thinly.
And then she remembered.
Yuto’s actions throughout the day.
The hand that had unhesitatingly grabbed her in front of her friends when she was being dragged to a blind date.
And the lie he had offered without explanation.
The movie I reserved is almost starting.
Yuzuki knew. It had not been merely a way to escape the situation. It had been emotion.
The heavy strength on her wrist at that time, the fingertips that moved before words, the forced tone of his voice—
it was clearly a childish, straightforward feeling.
It was exactly like the clumsy jealousy of boys that Yuzuki had often glimpsed between school uniforms in her school days.
That was why she could feel it completely. Yuto was quite shaken too.
So now, this time, she felt it was her turn to find courage.
She was trembling the same way, anxious and afraid, but.
Even so, she feared this awkward silence would drive him further away.
Her lips were dry. Her fingertips twitched.
But this time she did not run.
Yuzuki slowly took one step toward Yuto’s back.
Then quietly caught the hem of his shirt.
The moment her trembling fingertips touched his stopped back, that warm yet tense texture seeped straight down beneath her heart.
“…Oppa.”
A small, low voice. Careful, as if it would vanish if not spoken.
Yuto slowly turned his head. The moment their eyes met, no words were needed. That gaze understood everything.
Yuzuki pressed her lips together.
As if hiding her trembling, as a final defense against revealing her heart. Yet her hand still did not release his shirt.
And—
their gazes overlapped exactly as they were. Neither looked away. They simply stared at each other.

With eyes locked, a quiet silence flowed.
Yuzuki slowly closed her eyes.
That was the last courage she could offer. She said nothing more.
Now it was time to wait for his choice.
If Yuto turned away here, the two of them would probably never cross this boundary again.
In that moment when her breath trembled as if suffocating—
Yuzuki felt a warm hand rise to her waist.
That hand carefully yet with clear intent wrapped around her lower back, then gently slid through her hair to cradle the back of her head and draw her close.
And so, very quietly—
their breaths mingled.
The first touch of lips was soaked in hesitation, but soon it carried clearer and clearer heat.
Yuzuki’s body leaned as if naturally following the sensation traveling up her back.
Yuto’s fingertips embraced her carefully, yet as if he would never let go.
Her heart pounded wildly. Her chest felt like it was burning, and something long held back finally overflowed.
The air between them no longer cooled.
The space where nothing had happened only moments ago.
But in this instant, with this single kiss, everything changed.
At the boundary where their breaths touched, emotions that could no longer be postponed overlapped without words.
However, at that moment—
the front door Yuzuki had not properly closed when she entered could not withstand the small remaining gap. It creaked and slowly pushed inward.
Cold wind flowed through the slight opening, and familiar dress-shoe footsteps clicked across the entrance tiles.
Yuzuki reflexively flinched and clung closer to Yuto. The heat extending from his fingertips quietly froze.
The voice from the doorway.
Low and dry, yet clearly containing a tremor that suppressed deep emotion.
She knew without turning around.
It was their father.
Their lips were still touching. The heat that had flowed between them began to cool faster than the draft entering through the door.
Silence cut them apart before any words could.
A weight that paralyzed both body and heart pressed in quietly yet unmistakably from the front door.
