Chapter 3: Adapting to Anomalies-3
I spent several days undergoing tests at the hospital. The moment the word came down that I could be discharged, On-yu handled the procedures at lightning speed.
The doctor expressed some concern regarding my memory, which showed no signs of returning, but On-yu simply gave a bright smile and reassured him.
"I'll be right by In-ho’s side to explain everything to him, one by one."
I hadn't realized it while cooped up in the hospital, but the season had just turned to early autumn, and a slight chill lingered in the air.
Better than it being hot, I thought to myself.
On-yu linked her arm with mine, claiming I’d be cold since my body was weakened from the hospital stay.
Actually, it wasn't just linking arms; she was leaning her weight against me to the point where I was being pushed along, tilting to one side with every step.
Hey, weren't you supposed to be worried about me?
Based on the snippets of information I gathered from her at the hospital and on the way home, my personal profile was as follows:
Kang In-ho. 18 years old. Student at Hajal High School.
Birthday: May 4th.
Lost parents in an accident during the first year of middle school and became an orphan.
Currently living off the inheritance they left behind; apparently, I grew up fast and lived without much trouble.
My best friend is Shin On-yu, and we supposedly went everywhere together.
I found this last part a bit surprising.
If this was the work of the Pigeon God who dropped me here, I expected this girl to be pathologically obsessed with me. I thought she might give me false information since I’d lost my memory, but surprisingly, she didn't seem to be lying.
Honestly, if she had claimed we were dating, I would have gone on high alert immediately. I decided to keep watching for now.
Not that I’d completely let my guard down, of course.
After getting out of the taxi, we decided to walk for a bit.
As we strolled through the residential area of detached houses, I tried to burn the scenery into my memory. Since this was the world I had to settle in, it was best to get used to it quickly.
"Hehehe."
Even though spring was nowhere in sight, On-yu was giggling like a fool.
"Why are you laughing?"
"Well~ because it's been so long since I've walked home with you like this. I thought I'd never be able to walk this path with you again."
Twirling her hair with her finger, On-yu whispered, "I thought you being by my side was a given. But I realized it wasn't."
"Uh... right... well."
Not knowing how to respond to a conversation like that, I looked away.
On-yu didn't seem to have anything else to add either; she just tightened her grip on my arm. The strange pressure felt nice, yet heavy.
"It's over there."
Her finger pointed toward a house.
It was an ordinary house, the kind you could see anywhere. Having lived only in apartments, I’d always had a romanticized idea of detached houses, and now I finally got to live in one.
The front door used a digital lock.
I pressed 0504, my birthday, but the door didn't open. When I blinked at On-yu, she let out a chuckle and began pressing the numbers one by one with care.
"That's not the password, silly."
Her long, white finger landed on 1.
"Next is 2."
She pressed 2.
"Then 1 again."
After pressing 1 again, she looked at me.
"There's one number left."
"Yeah. What do you think the next number is?"
"How should I know?"
As she pressed 4, the lock opened with an electronic beep.
"1214? What kind of number is that?" I asked her as I opened the door.
"For your information, my birthday is December 14th."
"Why is my house password your birthday?"
At my question, On-yu gave a beaming smile and brought her face close to mine.
"I wonder?"
She whispered into my ear in a tiny voice.
To me, that voice sounded sweet, yet it gave me goosebumps.
