The Path of the Namgung Heavenly Demon
The sky had, at some point, deepened into a rich shade of indigo.
Before the Sword Soul Cave, Seventh Elder Namgung Do sat in perfect stillness atop a flat boulder, casting a sidelong glance at the tightly sealed stone gate as he spoke in a low voice.
"...This is taking rather long."
His voice dripped with undisguised irritation.
The sun had long since sunk past the western horizon, and darkness had fallen, yet the stone gate of the Sword Soul Cave remained firmly shut.
He turned his words toward Tenth Elder Namgung Baek, who still stood motionless before the gate.
"Perhaps it is time you steeled yourself for the worst?"
Despite the words coming from behind him, Namgung Baek answered without turning around.
"Not yet. The young master will return. I am certain of it."
Even as he spoke, Namgung Baek found himself biting down on his dry lips.
For all his confident words, his heart was already burning away, black with despair.
Is it truly to end like this?
Was the talent he had witnessed fated to wither before it could ever bloom, extinguished here in the depths of this cavern?
It was the very moment when a shadow of profound despair descended across Namgung Baek's face.
Ku-gu-gu-gung—!
A roar erupted that shook the very earth.
"...!"
Namgung Do's closed eyes snapped open.
The source of the thunder was none other than the Sword Soul Cave itself. And there was only one circumstance under which the cavern could produce a resonance of such magnitude.
"The Sword Selection..."
A sigh of disbelief escaped Namgung Do's lips.
In all his decades of keeping watch over this place, he had never once experienced anything like it—such an intense, such a pure wave of qi resonating through the entire cavern.
"Could it be!"
In Namgung Baek's face, mired in the mire of despair, shock rekindled the dying embers of hope. He felt gooseflesh break out across his entire body as he swallowed hard.
Before long, the roar that had shaken heaven and earth subsided, and the stone gate began to grind slowly open, scraping against the ground.
Grrrrk—.
And at last, through that widening gap, Namgung Cheon emerged.
But the figure that met Namgung Baek's eyes was not the Namgung Cheon he had known.
His handsome features were unchanged, yet the deep shadow that had once clouded his face had been swept clean away. Because of it, his bold, well-cut features seemed to have recovered their true luster, standing out all the more vividly.
What had changed above all else was the look in his eyes. Those once murky eyes now held a keenness as sharp as a drawn blade.
Namgung Baek's gaze drifted, as if pulled, toward the young man's waist.
The scabbard hanging at his left hip was extraordinary at a glance—the patterns wrought in white jade and pure silver were impossibly fine.
At that instant, a voice choked with astonishment burst out from behind him.
"Changcheon!"
That cry confirmed Namgung Baek's suspicion was no mistake.
Changcheon—the treasured sword said to have been wielded by the clan head generations past. To have been chosen by such a blade was, on its own, a staggering achievement.
But his astonishment lasted only a moment. When Namgung Baek's eyes reached the opposite hip, they froze solid.
In stark contrast to the resplendent scabbard of Changcheon, a second scabbard as black as pitch hung at his waist.
A scabbard I have never seen before...
And in that instant, a single fact flashed through Namgung Baek's mind.
No weapon of any kind may be carried into the Sword Soul Cave.
Which meant—he had received the Sword Selection twice.
"Hah..."
An involuntary gasp escaped Namgung Baek's lips. This was the miracle he had longed for—no, the miracle he had never even dared to hope for.
But before his emotion could settle, it was doused by Namgung Do's cold voice.
"Young master—might I ask how it is that you carry two swords?"
Polite in form alone, it was an unmistakable inquisition.
At those words, Namgung Cheon slowly raised his head and looked at Namgung Do.
"Is there some problem, Elder?"
His voice was perfectly calm. That very composure made Namgung Do's brow crease almost imperceptibly.
"Problem is perhaps not the word—it is a matter of the clan's law and tradition. In all the centuries past, not a single soul has ever taken two swords from the Sword Soul Cave. I raise this concern out of worry that this may be an act of overreaching greed, a clear transgression of our established code."
He laid deliberate weight on the word greed, seeking to recast the young master's achievement as a moral failing.
At that, Namgung Baek bristled and stepped forward.
"Seventh Elder, your words go too far. This is not greed—it is a blessing bestowed by heaven itself, an occasion for celebration. How can you revile it in such a manner?"
"Compose yourself. I merely worry for the long-standing order of this clan."
Just as a fresh tension was about to crackle between the two elders—
Namgung Cheon spoke, his calm eyes fixed on Namgung Do.
"In the law and tradition of the Namgung Clan that you strive so earnestly to protect, Elder—is there anywhere a rule stating that the Sword Selection must yield only a single blade?"
"..."
Silence.
Namgung Cheon's question was one no one had anticipated. And then he continued.
"And if such a rule does exist—then would it not, in truth, be the greater violation of our law to bar a man's way by brandishing a tradition that does not exist?"
"...!"
Namgung Do's pupils trembled violently. The spear he had raised—principle, and the authority of law—had wheeled about and struck its own master. He could no longer manage a single word; his lips merely quivered.
Namgung Cheon withdrew his gaze, as if the man were no longer worth his attention. Then, offering Namgung Baek a slight bow of courtesy, he spoke.
"Then I shall return to my quarters."
The tone was respectful, yet carried the unmistakable message that he had no further business here and wished not to be detained.
Namgung Do, his face frozen stiff, could do nothing but give a small nod, as if to say he had nothing more to add. Utterly defeated on every ground of logic and justification, he hardly dared to stand in the way of the young master's rest.
With leave granted, Namgung Cheon turned to his guard Baek Heon and the maidservant So-so, who stood staring at him as if in a trance.
"Let's go."
A short command. But within it lay a weight that had not been there before.
Baek Heon and So-so instinctively bowed their heads and followed in his wake.
Namgung Cheon passed unhurriedly before the two elders and made his way down the mountain. All that remained to the elders was one thing and one thing only—to stare, spellbound, until the young man bearing two swords vanished from their sight.
Namgung Cheon's quarters occupied the most remote corner of the clan's estate, in the far north. It was almost too spare, too humble, to be the residence of a direct son of the clan head. An old wooden table, a creaking chair, and bedding folded with quiet neatness—these were the sum of the room's furnishings.
"Young master, are you unharmed?"
The moment they entered the quarters, Baek Heon asked with a face full of worry. The shock and excitement of what had transpired before the Sword Soul Cave still had not faded from his eyes.
Namgung Cheon said nothing and set the two swords down on the table.
Clank.
The heavy sound filled the room.
"What is there to speak of?"
"That... the matter with the Seventh Elder, my lord. Considering his temper, he will surely not let this affair pass unanswered."
While Baek Heon spoke, So-so carefully approached and offered a cup of warm tea.
"Young master, please drink this first and steady yourself."
She too was trembling with fear, yet her concern for her master was plainly written on her face.
Namgung Cheon regarded the two of them in silence. One was consumed by worry; the other, even in the grip of fear, was striving to see to her duty.
The Namgung Cheon of old would have leaned upon their devotion and taken comfort in it. But the man he was now did not.
True loyalty—or expectation toward new power?
The Heavenly Demon had never trusted the hearts of men. Especially any goodwill directed at himself—that had always demanded suspicion first. It was the sole law of survival he had purchased with countless betrayals.
Namgung Cheon accepted the tea and took a sip. The warmth of the cup seeped into his palm, but his eyes remained as cool as ever.
"Give it no thought."
He set down the cup and spoke.
"You two may withdraw and rest. I wish to spend this night quietly—no one is to be admitted."
"...Yes, my lord."
"As you command, young master."
At his dismissal, Baek Heon and So-so could say nothing more. They bowed with proper courtesy and withdrew.
The door closed, and a complete stillness settled over the room once more.
Beneath the candlelight, Namgung Cheon closed his eyes and sank briefly into thought.
Seventh Elder Namgung Do...
He recalled the face of the elder who had pressed against him.
A man of the Eldest Young Master's faction—he will bear watching from here on.
His thoughts moved on to the next figure.
By contrast, Tenth Elder Namgung Baek will be useful.
Having aligned himself with no faction, the man would be willing to acknowledge a Sword Selection recipient to a reasonable degree. He would make a fine shield—and a fine spear—on the road ahead.
The first foothold has been laid without a misstep.
Namgung Cheon slowly opened his eyes and looked down at the two swords laid side by side on the table.
Changcheon, the treasured sword of the clan head generations past. And Mukhon—his own other self, its true form hidden within an aged scabbard.
Changcheon alone would have been quite enough.
Carrying Changcheon out of the cave had been a declaration of war in its own right—a proclamation to all the world that the cast-aside Namgung Cheon had returned, bearing legitimacy and lineage upon his back.
From this moment, the clan will have no choice but to acknowledge my existence, whether it likes it or not.
The corner of his mouth lifted briefly, then smoothed away.
The true fight begins now.
He closed his eyes once more and turned his consciousness inward. Within his dantian, the inner energy newly forged in the Sword Soul Cave revolved in silence—a power utterly new, created by fusing the destructive, ruthlessly efficient operating principles of the Demonic path's Mugak art into the Namgung Clan's Azure Sky Great Evolution Heart Law.
It left behind no residue of demonic qi, yet its explosive force far surpassed the original Azure Sky Great Evolution Heart Law. In the realm of the heart law, he had already completed his first act of creation.
But this alone was not enough. He needed a new sword—a new blade in which to contain this new power.
He gazed wordlessly at the two swords before him. That was the second task he must resolve.
Shrreeung—.
He drew Changcheon first. Bathed in moonlight, the blade exhaled a cool blue light—a clear, upright energy. He gave the sword a light, effortless swing through the empty air. It was the sword of Namgung, and nothing less.
This is my face.
He set Changcheon down, and this time laid his hand upon Mukhon's scabbard.
Sreeeeng—.
The instant Mukhon revealed itself, the candle flames in the room guttered menacingly. It was the exact opposite sensation to Changcheon—a hunger that threatened to swallow all things, a thirst starved for power, transmitted through his palm.
And this is my heart.
He took one sword in each hand. The two opposing energies faced each other in taut equilibrium, his body serving as the intermediary. Like water and oil, the two powers refused to mingle—and he quietly accepted them as they were.
Two swords. Two paths.
A single, vivid image took shape in his mind.
With Changcheon, I shall play the Namgung. With Mukhon, I shall become the Heavenly Demon.
He closed his eyes. Light and darkness, the Righteous and the Demonic, had at last found their way to coexistence within a single being.
This is the path I shall walk—
the path of the Namgung Heavenly Demon.
