Chapter Title: Back Alley
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Sudden turn of events had all my Valkyries drawing their weapons in unison.
"Ehey! No need to get like this between us, right?"
The moment the man finished speaking, the men summoned their own Valkyries.
The Valkyries summoned by the men looked powerful at a glance.
Regardless of rank, the weapons they carried were highly enhanced gear suitable for high levels.
"Don't move!"
I immediately shouted to halt my Valkyries. Fighting now would be a sure loss. Even if my Valkyries had high ranks, the level gap was too wide at the moment.
"Good call, Kai. Smart move. No need for us to fight each other. The Master wants to see you, so let's go."
I hurriedly unsummoned my Valkyries. I couldn't let them die.
Valkyries didn't vanish completely upon death.
They could be resummoned after 24 hours if killed in battle. But death meant losing experience and possibly levels.
More importantly, the pain and terror of death they felt were all too real.
I didn't want my Valkyries to go through that.
If they meant to ambush me, they could've done it before entering the city. But coming after we'd finished our meal showed some consideration.
Maybe it wasn't that dangerous after all.
"By the way, Kai. Why no contact all this time?"
The rough-looking man spoke to me amiably.
I had no idea what to say. This body's memories were blank.
"Um... I have amnesia right now. I don't even know who you are."
The rough man stopped dead in his tracks.
"What? What kinda nonsense is that? You messing with me?"
"It's not a joke. It's real."
"Ha..."
He stared at me in disbelief for a long while, then glanced at his companions behind him.
"No wonder... You were using polite speech with me... So, amnesia or something?"
"Yes. Spot on."
"Ha... This is... What the hell... For real?"
He spoke with a gravely serious expression, his face so frightening it made my body tremble.
"No memories since yesterday."
"Fine... Let's go see the Master first."
The man sighed deeply and took the lead.
I couldn't guess what relationship this body had with these men. At first, it seemed like debt collectors, but now they felt like comrades.
'And my name really is Kai?'
It was surprising that it matched the ID I'd used.
It almost felt natural, like possessing this world was meant to be.
I followed the man into a shadowy back alley corner. The path narrowed and darkened with every step. It was the kind of place where a murder could go unnoticed.
'No law enforcement around here, huh?'
I scanned the surroundings for potential help, but the dim alley held no signs of life.
Before long, we arrived at a rundown building.
It looked dilapidated enough to be haunted.
The men entered without hesitation. No running away now, so I opened the door and followed.
Inside, the scene was completely different from the exterior.
Antique furniture and lighting made the place feel luxurious.
As I looked around, the rough man spoke up.
"Hey! Kai! First time here? Quit gawking and hurry up."
"Ah... Yeah, first time..."
"Ha... Figures. Just follow me."
Up on the second floor, we reached an ornate double door that screamed "top dog lives here."
Two guards at the front bowed deeply to the man.
"Mr. Jenellu. You've arrived."
The greeting felt straight out of a mob movie.
'So his name's Jenellu, huh?'
The guards opened the heavy door, and Jenellu and I entered.
The Master's room was even more opulent than the rest.
"Master. I've brought Kai."
"Good work. Sit."
The man called Master sat at a desk in the inner office. Black hair, sharp features.
A long scar over one eye made him look even fiercer.
It was the kind of face that made you swallow dryly.
Jenellu beside him and everyone working here had that same vibe.
Jenellu and I sat on the sofa before the Master.
"Why no contact?"
"..."
The Master spoke, but I just stared blankly, so Jenellu elbowed me.
"Ah! Me?"
I hadn't even realized he was addressing me.
"Yes. You."
"Um... Well, I've had no memories since yesterday..."
The Master stared at me silently. No clue what he was thinking.
"Hungover or something? No, you don't drink."
"No memories means... I don't even know who I am. They're completely gone."
I decided to stick with the amnesia story. No memories anyway.
"You got your Status from our organization. Then you vanished right after registering, show up now with amnesia? Not running away?"
"Pardon? Did that happen?"
This was genuinely news to me.
'Status isn't standard for everyone?'
"Ha... Jenellu. Check his Status."
At the Master's word, Jenellu stood and motioned me to follow.
He led me to a device with a large monitor.
I stared at it blankly, clueless on what to do.
"What're you doing? Put your left hand on it."
"Pardon? Ah... Okay."
"You really don't remember this either?"
"No... Nothing..."
I placed my left hand on the device as Jenellu instructed.
The monitor displayed my basic info succinctly.
"Looks like you got the Status from me yesterday and summoned right away. Three registered Valkyries."
"Yes. He had some with him—decent ranks too."
Jenellu reported from the side, eyeing the Valkyries.
"Can you summon them now?"
I hesitated at the Master's question. No point hiding now.
I used the Status to summon the three Valkyries.
"Hmmm... Impressive pulls."
The Master let out an admiring sound at the sight.
Summoned in unfamiliar surroundings, the Valkyries drew their weapons, thinking I was in danger before unsummoning.
"Everyone, hold. They're not enemies. Weapons away."
At my words, they sheathed their weapons.
The Master calmly eyed each one before speaking.
"Who's that Valkyrie? Never seen her before."
He pointed at Lije.
"Lije."
"Rank?"
No choice but to answer his persistent questions.
"SSR rank."
Both the Master and Jenellu looked stunned.
SSR Valkyries must be rare.
"Really SSR?"
Jenellu double-checked.
"Yes."
"Heh... Unreal..."
"Tell me about it. Jenellu, how many SSRs so far?"
"Known ones total four. Two in Krantz Empire, one in Kairan Kingdom, one in Shirone Kingdom."
Their words shocked me instead. SSRs were that rare? Sure, I burned 300k diamonds for one, but I didn't realize the odds were that low.
Early in the Valkyrie world setting, few SSRs made sense.
No cash shops either—just mining for diamonds.
That made me unstoppable here.
"You pulled Lije, an SSR, and Lussera, an SR, together?"
I'd spent 300k diamonds, but yeah, that was the story.
No other way to farm diamonds besides the initial 10-pull.
"Yes."
"Born with luck, huh. Good thing. Jenellu, take him and reteach everything. And Kai."
"Yes?"
"Don't summon Lije or Lussera unless necessary. Too conspicuous."
"Understood."
Jenellu bowed to the Master, so I followed suit.
I unsummoned the Valkyries and left with Jenellu.
Cold sweat trickled down my back.
"Phew..."
"The guy who never flinched at the Master before, freaking out? Oh, right—amnesia. Keep forgetting."
"I was like that?"
"You're a whole different person. Maybe the cocky old you was better."
No idea what personality this body had, so amnesia was the smart play.
"Follow me. Total wipe, so gotta teach from scratch."
I followed Jenellu into what looked like a meeting room.
