I was Private Second Class Cha Yu-ri.
The textbook deadweight problem soldier, so to speak.
Not that I was socially maladjusted.
Out in the civilian world, I'd been perfectly fine.
Right now I was simply nursing a grudge against the Republic of Korea's conscription system and acting the deadbeat. That was all.
Why act, you ask?
For my grand ambition.
I planned to fake a panic disorder and depression diagnosis and get an early discharge. In other words, I aimed to fail the active-duty fitness screening.
I felt no pangs of conscience.
If there was a way to dodge, I had to take it.
Why put up with it and endure?
I had too much resentment to endure a single second.
Men were citizens exactly like women, yet they didn't shoulder the duty of national defense, did they? So why did I have to piss away my twenties in a shithole like this just because I was a woman?
Was being born female a crime?
Sure, the male-to-female ratio was low, but weren't they treated way too much like royalty?
The laws of the Republic of Korea were fucking bullshit.
Men disgusted me.
I wanted to blow up this military that hammered a rotten hierarchy into your skull every day.
Yeah. I just hated every last bit of it.
Being in the army felt like it was actually giving me a genuine mental illness.
‘This fucking dogshit military...’
I wanted to get discharged as fast as possible.
I wanted to escape this godforsaken place.
I had no idea why I was stuck here making this kind of scene.
‘Fuck, fuck, fuck! And what was the point of full-combat-gear road marches, anyway? This was killing me, seriously! This goddamn moronic army!’
I was cycling through profanity in my head when it happened.
Suddenly, cheers began to ripple forward from the front of the column.
"Waaaaaaah!"
"Waaaaah!"
I was curious why those morons were acting up.
The reason became clear a moment later.
Listening to what the senior soldiers up front were saying, they'd apparently called in a male celebrity to boost morale during training.
‘A guy's riding a truck past us and waving? What a whole production.’
Watching the people shrieking like they'd lost their minds over a man, I thought:
What a pathetic bunch.
I couldn't fathom getting that worked up over one guy.
Were they just sex-crazed animals?
Shrieking and cheering over a man was cheap.
I'd always hated that type.
I meant the rabid fangirls, the ones who went hysterical over idols.
Declaring themselves extras lost in a faceless crowd—it was laughable.
...That was what I'd thought up until a moment ago. Definitely.
"Thank you for your hard work. Stay strong, everyone."
The truck rolled up right next to us.
And the man driving raised his hand with a light smile. He was good-looking enough to casually chew up and spit out most actors.
‘What? Was this CGI? A guy that handsome actually existed?’
He possessed a face you'd struggle to find even on screen, let alone in real life.
The aura was peculiar, too.
A decadent feeling suffused his features.
Yet in contrast, his eyes were as clear as spring water, and his smile radiated a warmth as cozy and gentle as sunlight.
Of course, I was exaggerating a little.
Soldiers were known to think even a random middle-aged guy passing by looked handsome.
But even without the soldier filter, it was obvious that guy's looks were divine, firmly in the top tier.
‘He was smiling and waving... even at me.’
A man like that was waving his hand at me.
"You, Yu-ri, hang in there too."
"Huh, what? Me? How do you know my..."
"You've got a nametag, don't you? Anyway, stay strong."
He even called me by name.
Wearing a bright, unguarded smile with not a hint of pretense.
If.
If, by any chance...
Had I never joined the military, would something have ever happened in my life where a man like that gave me encouragement and support?
Probably not.
No, absolutely not.
It was unmistakably a luxury I could only enjoy because I held the status of a soldier.
And in an instant, I understood.
The meaning of my being here right now.
The reason I was enduring brutal training in the army.
It was...
To protect a precious citizen of the Republic of Korea just like that man.
Having attained enlightenment, I straightened my back and corrected my posture.
And just like the senior soldiers, I raised both arms high.
Thus I finished preparing to let out a cheer.
"Waaa..."
We were.
"Waaaaa...!"
For the nation and its people.
"Waaaaaaaaa!!!"
The ever-loyal Republic of Korea Army.
"I will protect this country with all my might! So you can stretch out your legs and sleep in peace, big brother!!!"
That day, patriotism was born within me.
I resolved to drop the deadbeat act and do my military service properly.
***
Was that Cha Yu-ri?
That private second class inevitably caught my eye.
It was because of her uniquely enormous chest.
It was so overwhelmingly massive you couldn't even compare it to anyone else's. Bigger than a ballistic helmet.
While looking, I saw her nametag too, and feeling awkward for staring at her chest, I ended up even calling her name.
And that was a mistake.
Because now I was calling out every other soldier's name one by one.
"Call my name too! My name is Myeong-ja!"
"Stay strong, Myeong-ja."
"Waaaaaahk!!!"
By this point, my arm was going numb and my throat was sore.
How many tens of minutes had I been at this already?
My waving hand was starting to lose all feeling.
I couldn't just close the window because I was tired.
Once I started something, I had to see it through.
After all, it wouldn't be right to discriminate—cheering only the front rows while ignoring the back.
I had no spare moment to check the chat window.
By now they were probably hammering out all sorts of messages among themselves.

【Reformed Guburi】─lol fuckin' army bitches. The whole unit lost their goddamn minds the instant Gye Bastard-hun descended lmaooo
【Yoho】─Seeing the streamer in person... I'm so jealous of those soldiers.
『'cncjswha12' has entered the channel.』
【Reformed Guburi】─Oh. Welcome, newbie.
【cncjswha12】─hi what kinda stream is this? The title just said 123 so I got curious and came in. Why are there soldiers?
【Reformed Guburi】─It's an Outdoor Stream. We were driving and ran into some army bitches on a road march lol
【cncjswha12】─ah so is the streamer a guy or a girl?
【Reformed Guburi】─What's it to you, you fucking bitch.
【Yoho】─She's a woman.
【cncjswha12】─Ah. A chick? Came in for nothing then. gg.
『'cncjswha12' has left the channel.』
【Reformed Guburi】─?? The fuck, look at this cunt running off a viewer?
【Yoho】─The streamer did say she doesn't want any kind of promotion.
【Reformed Guburi】─She said she hates promo, not to trick viewers into leaving, you brain-dead bitch.
【Yoho】─Either way, that person was fated to be banned later on. They were the type with shady motives who only go looking for male streams.
【Reformed Guburi】─Says the one acting like she's not exactly the same lmaooo
『'whfflek555' has entered the channel.』
【Reformed Guburi】─Welcome, newbie. We've suddenly got some traffic.
【whfflek555】─What kind of stream is this?
【Reformed Guburi】─Outdoor Stream.
【whfflek555】─Male streamer?
【Reformed Guburi】─n
『'whfflek555' has left the channel.』
【Yoho】─Still, even if it's a hobby stream, if it keeps being just the two of us viewers, won't the streamer lose interest and quit?
【Reformed Guburi】─Did this bitch literally get shot in the head? If you were worried about that, you shouldn't have lied and said she was a woman earlier, you fuck.
【Yoho】─That person was clearly sleazy, that's why I did it.
【Reformed Guburi】─Cut the bullshit lol. Anyway, our Gye Bastard-hun isn't quitting, so don't worry. He said this is his only hobby lol. And seeing his place today, doesn't seem like he'd quit over money either.
【Yoho】─Well, that's a relief.

I reached the tail end of the column.
I waved at the soldiers right until the very last one.
"Stay strong..."
"Waaaaaah! I love you!"
It was finally over.
The moment I passed the marching soldiers, the road opened wide.
Only then could I step on the gas and pick up speed.
And I glanced sideways at the chat window I hadn't been able to check until now.
【Reformed Guburi】─Sexy sex~
【Yoho】─Ugh.
The viewer count was still two.
No new traffic, but I was relieved the existing viewers hadn't left either.
I resumed communicating.
"Sorry, guys. I ended up not paying attention to the stream."
【Reformed Guburi】─If you're gonna apologize, just don't screw up in the first place lol
【Yoho】─It's fine lol
【Reformed Guburi】─But his real-life face must be total overkill lol. How delicious-looking does a guy have to be for them to throw that kind of tantrum? Or do soldiers just react that easily?
【Reformed Guburi】─Delicious was a typo. I mis-typed 'handsome' lol
"Don't talk shit. Anyway, we're getting on the highway now, so we'll be at the mart soon. I've gotta speed up too, so I might not be able to check chat much. Hang on a sec."
【Yoho】─Keeping your eyes on the road is important. You could communicate through donation messages and not even have to check chat, though hehe
【Reformed Guburi】─How long till the mart?
"Don't donate. And arriving in about twenty minutes?"
【Reformed Guburi】─fuckin' hell did this dude build his house in the actual boonies? Who has to drive to the mart for that long?
【Yoho】─Yikes. You must live somewhere really out of the way... That's dangerous T_T
【Reformed Guburi】─Yikes my ass lol. But wasn't there also no neighbors nearby?
"There are neighbors, dipshit, they're just a bit far apart... And right now I'm going to a newly opened big-box mart, that's why it's taking a while."
I didn't deny that it was the countryside.
Because the place was pretty far from the city.
Even so, the mart was actually fairly close.
Normally, if you drove about ten minutes from here, you'd arrive.
It was only taking long right now because I was heading to the so-called newly opened mart.
‘Well, I wouldn't say twenty minutes counts as that long anyway.’
As I drove along enjoying the scenery outside, twenty minutes passed before I knew it and I arrived at the mart parking lot.
Just as I'd thought, it was a perfectly reasonable distance.
【Reformed Guburi】─Oh. Parking lot's huge as fuck. Like Yoho's hole lol. Kinda looks like a Walmart in America, though.
【Yoho】─Quit pretending you've been to America.
【Reformed Guburi】─Ay Gye Bastard-hun, where is this mart? Was there ever a place like this in Korea?
【Yoho】─Stop making it obvious you don't have a car. Stop trying to figure out his residence.
【Reformed Guburi】─Shut the hell up for a second, you fucking bitch. Why do you keep telling people what not to do? And don't treat a law-abiding citizen like a would-be criminal, fuck.
"If you're curious, search Nobel Mart on the internet."
The parking lot was wide and quiet.
There didn't seem to be many customers.
They seemed to be running a promotion, though...
Was it because it was so far from the city?
It looked like word of mouth hadn't spread yet.
‘Plenty of parking spaces, though. That was nice.’
After parking in a suitable spot.
I transferred my smartphone onto the selfie stick, grabbed my wallet, and got out of the car.
After that, I walked a short distance and reached the mart entrance.
And the very moment I was about to go inside.
"H-hold on a second!"
Out of nowhere, an employee blocked my way.
"Yes? Why?"
"Could I ask what brings you here? I mean, may I ask how you got here?"
What brought me here.
Grocery shopping, obviously.
I didn't get why she was asking something so obvious.
Did this mart conduct inspections on customers or something?
Looking at the employee's face, she was drenched in a cold sweat for some reason I couldn't fathom.
