Chapter Title: The Immortal Vampire Girl Rosen (2)
Hurriedly unlocking the upper bolt and reaching for the lower one, Dong-jin heard the man plastered to the door start pounding and throwing a fit.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
The man's racket cut the female students' chatter short, drawing all eyes to the convenience store.
The instant he released the lower bolt, Dong-jin threw his body against the door, shoving it open hard.
The door flew wide, knocking the clinging man backward.
Dong-jin rammed it harder still, pinning the guy to the wall, and bellowed at the girls.
"Students! Get in here quick! Hurry!"
Stunned by his shout, the girls spotted the staggering men lurching toward them and screamed, bolting into the store.
"Kyaa! What the hell are those guys?"
As the girls piled in, Dong-jin slammed the door shut and bolted it tight.
Spurred by their screams, the men's shambling steps picked up speed.
Moments later, they swarmed the convenience store windows.
The man Dong-jin had shoved from door to wall latched on again, hammering the glass viciously.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
His lower jaw hung loose from the earlier impact, flopping with every move, while his dislocated right arm dangled limply, flapping uselessly as he pounded away with his left.
* * *
"Wait, isn't that guy hurt? Shouldn't we call 911?"
The tall girl pointed at the man snarling through the glass door at Dong-jin, his jaw dangling like a broken hinge.
Can a human really snarl and claw at the door like that with a floppy jaw and arm?
Dong-jin shot the clerk a glance.
"Call the cops, now!"
The clerk uncurled from behind the counter and stepped out to grab the phone.
The second she moved, the three men glued to the counter-side window redoubled their assault on the glass.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Bloody handprints smeared across the windows, multiplying with every blow.
"Eek! Uncle, what are those guys? Why are they so feral?"
A younger-looking girl piped up.
Dong-jin didn't spare her a look. He scooped up Rosen, planting her behind him.
"No clue what their deal is, but they sure as hell aren't friendly. You girls live in that apartment complex?"
Dong-jin had seen this before at Daesung Hospital—he knew exactly what these men were—but he kept it to himself.
"No, we're heading home from our aunt's place."
The tall girl replied.
Dong-jin eyed the pair; they looked enough alike to be sisters, no doubt.
"Called it in. Cops are on their way."
The clerk sounded relieved after hanging up.
Dong-jin turned to scan the men plastered to the glass.
The storefront windows looked thick enough to hold until help arrived.
"Perfect. So you two are sisters, huh? What's your names?"
He flashed the clerk a reassuring smile before tossing the question at the girls to calm them down.
"I'm the big sis. This is Sun-young, and I'm Eun-young. Lee Eun-young."
Her voice had steadied; she was starting to relax.
As Dong-jin chatted with Eun-young, headlights lit up the narrow two-lane road leading into the apartment complex.
"Uncle, car's coming!"
Rosen pointed out the window from behind him.
The little girl was eerily calm.
Dong-jin straightened up and peered where she pointed.
A sedan's silhouette was rolling in from the complex entrance.
Its headlights glared too bright to make out details.
The men stuck to the door and windows heard it too—they twisted around, then lurched off toward the road.
As they peeled away from the store, Rosen tugged at Dong-jin.
"Uncle, let's get out now—quick!"
She stepped in front, grabbing his hand to pull him along.
Dong-jin ruffled her hair gently and headed for the door.
"Rosen, the cops'll be here any minute. Best to wait it out. I'll just peek outside, see what those scary guys are up to. You stay put, okay?"
He stationed himself at the glass door, peering out. The clerk and the Lee sisters—Eun-young and Sun-young—stood on tiptoe behind him, craning for a look.
Rosen scanned the shelves, then plucked a small frying pan from a display rack.
"Cops won't be here that fast, right?"
Dong-jin asked the clerk without turning, eyes glued outside.
She nodded, staring out the window too.
The sedan's shape sharpened in their view, halting right in front of the men blocking the road.
"Hey! Move it, please."
The driver's window cracked down, revealing a young guy's face.
He was pissed about the roadblock.
The men on the road shambled toward the open window and the guy behind it.
The jawless one who'd been at the door lunged at the driver, clamping onto his head and gnashing at his forehead.
With his jaw flopping loose, though, he couldn't sink his teeth in—just scraped futilely with his front ones.
"What the—? Who are you? And what's with your damn jaw?"
The driver shoved the scraping maniac away, yelling.
As he shouted, the passenger and back doors swung open.
Two guys about his age hopped out and advanced on the men swarming the driver's side.
"Hey, you old drunks! If you're wasted, go home quietly. What the hell are you doing?"
"Let go of that guy! Why the fuck are you biting people?"
Suspicious of their vibe, the young guys yelled from a safe distance—but got no reaction.
"Aaaah! My ear!"
The driver howled as someone tore into his ear, blood streaming down.
His friends lost it at the scream and charged in to pry the men off the car.
"You assholes!"
The commotion drew two middle-aged women from the complex; they edged closer to gawk.
"Argh! My finger! The bastard bit my finger off!"
One of the guys wrestling men away thrust up his left hand in agony, screaming.
His index finger was sheared off halfway, dark blood gushing out.
The second he pulled back, one of the driver-side men launched himself, sinking teeth into his neck.
"Oh god! What is that?"
"Eek! No way."
The onlookers shrieked at the gruesome sight.
One man wheeled around at the screams, staggering toward the women.
They bolted, screaming toward the complex entrance.
Two elderly security guards heard the noise, rushed out, herded the women back, and grappled the pursuing man.
"You can't cause trouble here."
Just then, the last guy yanking men off the driver collapsed clutching his side, screaming.
"Ugh… Aaaak!"
Incredibly, the driver—the one he'd been helping—had chomped into his buddy's flank.
Blood poured from the wound, soaking the pavement.
"Those guys look just like zombies."
Eun-young whispered from behind Dong-jin.
Her gaze locked on the old guards at the entrance and the man.
The guards who'd grabbed the chasing man were now shambling toward the store just like him.
They'd turned too.
"Uncle, what do we do?"
Eun-young clutched her little sister Sun-young, pleading with Dong-jin.
Four women total—three of them young girls.
No way Dong-jin could lead them out safely.
One in the car. Three at the entrance.
Five on the road.
Eight monsters even without the car guy—and he had zero confidence protecting them all.
Emel's words from the pasture flashed back: she'd send a zombie horde after Byung-su.
Emel sent these. Identical to the Daesung Hospital ones!
If they were really zombies, a couple of cops would just pad the numbers.
"Everyone, listen up. I'll head out, lure 'em to the main road. Once they chase me, you bolt from here—far as you can. Got it?"
He scanned their faces, then flipped the upper bolt.
No one tried to stop him. No one offered to tag along.
Dong-jin felt no resentment—just a strange peace.
As he went for the lower bolt, Rosen thrust the frying pan right in his face.
"Uncle, take this. And don't go to the main road—head into the complex. Promise?"
He gripped the pan she handed him, cracked the door with a bright smile, and stepped out.
The men swarmed him instantly.
Eight in total—one still in the car.
Dong-jin clocked the count fast and sprinted for the complex entrance.
Two guards and one man lurched toward him from that direction.
Thanks to him herding the rest inside, just the car guy remained out front.
As Rosen reached for the door, the clerk yanked her back and slammed the upper bolt home.
"No! Don't open it!"
Rosen blinked in confusion at the outburst. The clerk locked the lower one too, then addressed the three girls.
"We're waiting right here for the cops. They said they're coming soon."
* * *
Dong-jin dodged the guard blocking his path, slipping sideways—but a man grabbed his left shoulder from behind.
The iron grip dug in. Dong-jin swung the frying pan down on the hand.
Crack.
Bone snapped clean through, but the man didn't even grunt.
He just yanked harder, hauling Dong-jin backward.
Desperate, Dong-jin smashed the pan onto the guy's fingers.
They shattered; the hand fell loose. But pain exploded through Dong-jin's own shoulder—he twisted, howling.
"Argh!"
As he buckled forward, a man standing with the guards seized his head.
"Goddamn it—let go!"
Dong-jin headbutted the guy's gut. They tumbled to the ground in a tangle.
Entwined on the pavement, the man lunged for Dong-jin's nose. Panicked, Dong-jin jammed the frying pan into his mouth and rolled free.
Men reached for him as he scrambled up.
"Argh! For real—too damn much."
He evaded their hands, scuttling across the ground on all fours before springing up and bolting for the complex entrance.
