Chapter Title: Shooting - 1
-----------------------------------------------------------------
“That's amazing. How do you hit every single shot without missing like that? What were your shooting scores like at basic training?”
“All 20 shots were hits.”
“Even at the second round?”
“Probably.”
“Wow, impressive? They must’ve let you make a reward call or something?”
A call.
Yeah, I did.
I said I didn’t need it, but the platoon leader insisted, so I did it twice.
‘I called the Neo Play customer center.’
Most recruits would’ve called their parents.
But since my parents might as well not exist, figuring out who to call was its own ordeal.
‘They were super nice since I said I was a Hunter Military recruit. Cheered me on and everything.’
A company from a different world entirely.
“You can stop here. You’re better at shooting than me already.”
“No, sir. Thank you.”
Another 20 minutes passed before Lee Dong-jin finally said it was time to get up.
He didn’t know about the other hunters, but for Kim Minjun at least, the shooting practice hadn’t helped a bit.
‘Still, it killed some time.’
He knew it was just Lee trying to do something nice, so it didn’t bother him.
“If your scores suck and the seniors chew you out, just take it in stride. Some of them said they missed a ton at first too. Of course, beatings are pretty much gone these days.”
“If I get chewed out, do you get in trouble too, Lance Corporal Lee Dong-jin?”
“Probably, since I’m your direct senior. But whatever, I’m used to it. I’ve got plenty of time in as a lance corporal—you don’t need to worry about it.”
Lee Dong-jin brushed it off and headed out.
Kim Minjun smirked as he watched him go.
‘You’re never getting chewed out.’
Because.
The real shooting training coming up next.
I’d show them what shooting really was.
**
Ten a.m.
The hunters gathered in front of the parade ground for shooting training.
“Ugh… Road march in full combat gear, and now shooting right after.”
“Look at this bullshit training schedule.”
The hunters grumbled as they grabbed their rifles.
Standard shooting used a rifle modeled after the M16.
Special shooting trained marksmanship in unusual situations.
“They’re telling us to bring mana guns, so special shooting’s gotta be something like a hostage scenario.”
“Yeah, mana gun means one hundred percent.”
The corporals with some real time in service complained predictably as they holstered the pistol-shaped mana guns at their waists.
“Squad leaders, report headcounts.”
“First squad, total strength thirteen! Present thirteen! All accounted for!”
“Second squad, total strength eleven! Present…”
The hunters finished roll call in front of the parade ground and moved to the shooting range.
Since it used mana-infused rounds, the building’s durability was insane.
It looked like a rundown old facility on the outside, but it could hold off a horde of low-grade monsters for about ten minutes.
Against mid-grade ones, though? Not even five.
Best they could do, apparently.
“Minjun.”
“Private Kim Minjun.”
“Shooting time’s unlimited, got it? Don’t worry if seniors rush you from behind. What matters most is how many hits you get.”
“Understood.”
In the middle of the safety briefing.
Lee Dong-jin leaned in and spoke quietly.
“Just figure you’ll get yelled at the first time and relax.”
“Yes, sir. Thank you.”
Hunter Military rifles were trickier than regular army ones.
Monsters didn’t drop easy from standard rounds.
So they used mana rounds mostly.
Zeroing the sights helped a tiny bit.
In the end, you had to build it up with reps and feel.
“No issues at firing lane one!”
“No issues at firing lane two!”
“No issues at firing lane three!”
Kim Minjun was assigned to lane two.
“Let’s see what this rookie can do.”
A sergeant stood right behind the waiting line.
“Heard you were top recruit at basic? That was with zeroed sights. Think of this as combat.”
“Yes, sir. Understood.”
“Our unit doesn’t go easy on rookies. Hit well or get yelled at.”
“Understood.”
Hunter Military through and through.
No mercy even for a private who’d been here one day.
“Don’t worry about time. Take it slow. We’ll wait.”
“Yes, sir. Understood.”
The sergeant yawned and stared downrange.
“All lanes, prepare to fire!”
“Prepare to fire!”
“All lanes, load mana rounds!”
“Load mana rounds!”
A moment later.
The range instructor’s voice boomed over the speakers, and shooting training began.
“Ready lanes, commence firing!”
BOOM!
A cannon-like roar echoed as mana rounds fired.
The hunters winced for a split second but kept eyes on target.
‘They really should spend more on defense budget.’
Cheap mods to save cash led to crap like this.
Back in the day, a dungeon break in Seoul had monsters pouring out.
People even complained to the army about the noise.
Sudden hearing loss, pay up, that kinda thing.
Of course, Hunter Military got better treatment now.
Hunter Military standard shooting was pretty much like regular army.
Line up hits on a target about 30 meters out, done.
BOOM!
BOOOOM!
Soon the range filled with thunderous noise.
Prone firing position.
Kim Minjun aimed casually at the target and squeezed the trigger.
‘Easy. Feels different from basic, though.’
The long-range weapon he’d trained with in that other world was a crude rifle.
One that needed manual reloading after every shot, total garbage!
Bullets flew weird directions too.
Jam every other shot when bored.
‘Compared to that piece of shit, this is paradise.’
Kim Minjun fired off all 20 rounds without a second thought.
BOOM!
BOOM!
Unlike the hunters painstaking over each shot, he finished in two minutes flat.
“…What.”
Nineteen out of twenty.
Insane, considering the unit average was ten.
‘Ah, damn. One miss. Thought it was perfect.’
Kim Minjun actually looked disappointed.
The sergeant waiting behind grabbed the target after, face full of disbelief.
“One, two… This possible?”
He peered through the target like it might be fake.
“This okay?”
“…….”
The sergeant nodded in a daze.
Even with three years in, he couldn’t hit nineteen.
And the MX16 wasn’t something you muscled through with luck.
“Damn… Look at that. A private hits nineteen?”
“Lucky shot? What’s your name.”
“Private Kim Minjun, sir!”
Other hunters finishing late gaped at his target.
Even the officers.
“Look, like ten in the head area?”
“Top recruit wasn’t hype.”
After some murmuring.
-Don’t fuck around, prep next round!
The instructor’s shout scattered the stares from Kim Minjun.
“Oh, sergeant’s about to get shown up by a rookie. You got skills.”
“Private Kim Minjun. Thank you, sir.”
The sergeant clapped his shoulder and took prone position.
“All lanes, prepare to fire!”
“Prepare to fire!”
Standard shooting ended, and the senior hit fourteen.
A bit above unit average.
“Ugh, strained my eyes like hell and got fourteen.”
The sergeant smacked his lips in regret.
-Retrieve targets and stand by at positions.
“Standing by!”
Shooting training paused for a break.
“You Kim Minjun?”
“Private Kim Minjun! Yes, sir!”
“Hey! Lemme see that target!”
“Yes, sir! Understood!”
Break hit, and hunters swarmed from everywhere.
Kim Minjun handed the target to the seniors.
They gasped at the head turned into Swiss cheese.
“Damn, insane. Nineteen hits.”
“One, two… All nineteen in the head?”
“Humanly possible?”
“Minjun, how?”
“Fired like they taught at basic!”
“How many’d you hit there?”
“All twenty!”
The other hunters let out admiring noises.
“Whoa. Anyone ever hit nineteen before?”
“Nope. Best sergeant’s seventeen, right?”
“Yeah.”
Total domination.
Hunters passed the target around for a while.
‘You try handling a K98-lookalike in that world.’
Thinking one miss meant death.
Of course, saying ‘I got sick of shooting in another world!’ would land him in special interest territory.
Best to just say you trained hard.
“Anyway, do good in special shooting this afternoon too. Feels like you will.”
“Private Kim Minjun! Thank you, sir!”
“Yeah. Not a top recruit for nothing.”
The seniors patted his shoulder.
“Standard shooting training complete. Good work, everyone. Especially Kim Minjun!”
“Private Kim Minjun!”
“Yeah. First time shooting, and nineteen hits? Well done. Keep it up!”
“Understood!”
The instructor’s praise wrapped up standard shooting.
‘Crazy. First time seeing the instructor praise anyone.’
‘Even officers’d struggle with that.’
Other hunters got swept up and started clapping.
Clap clap clap!
‘No, what for…’
Kim Minjun awkwardly rubbed his nose.
“Return to barracks, clean rifles, assemble parade ground by one p.m. Got it!”
“Yes, sir! Understood!”
On the way back from the range.
Corporals who’d ignored him in the barracks mobbed him with questions.
“Perfect score’s six days seven nights leave! I’m jealous just watching.”
“Nineteen get nothing? If I was instructor, I’d hook you up, for real.”
Seniors lamented ‘one more hit’ like it was their own miss.
“Hey, gimme tips for MX16. I’ll buy you PX shit.”
“Feels like calculating in your head makes you miss. Sense is what matters, I think.”
“Fuck, talent spawn.”
“That your answer, baby? Same as Faker sniping last hits for cash when minion blood’s low.”
“Sorry, sir.”
“Kidding, kidding. Elite soldier joins, good for us.”
Squadmates thumped his shoulder once each, told him to crush afternoon shooting too.
“You aced standard. Do the same for special.”
Then.
Sergeant Lee Seung-ho tossed that out and vanished.
“Ooh, Sergeant Lee’s picky on training. Must like your score.”
“How many’d Sergeant Lee hit?”
“Sixteen?”
“Good, but less than the baby?”
“I hear everything, shut it.”
“Yes, sir…”
Chatting hunters hit the barracks and started cleaning rifles for afternoon shooting.
