Perfume (Part 1) — Drug, Complex, Exposure, Liberation

Seoyeon had always been careful.
It had started in middle school. Even in the same uniform as everyone else, she alone looked different — the buttons strained, the gym clothes never fit. The teachers said nothing, but the boys spat it out right away, with their eyes and with their mouths. That was when Seoyeon learned: this body was something to be hidden.
It went on through university. Through her years at work. She carried her bag in front of her. She buttoned her cardigan to the throat. Seated on the subway, she folded both hands atop her knees — a posture that just happened to shield her chest with her arms. When it felt like someone was watching from behind, she narrowed her shoulders forward. Somewhere along the way it sank into her very bones, until even standing before a mirror, her shoulders were always curled inward.
Seven years, like that.
She'd heard it often — that her face looked like a child's. Big eyes, small lips; soft, gentle features. People said she looked sweet. Harmless. And that face made the drop all the steeper. The moment anyone's gaze slid below it, their expression changed. She hated that more than anything — the way something about her got decided on sight alone.
So she hid it. If it couldn't be seen, it was as if it didn't exist.
It had been three years with Jiho. Marriage had come up in conversation. Jiho was a good man — he never rushed her, never pushed, always said, "At your own pace." When Seoyeon stopped, he stopped with her.
But lately, that slowness of his — at times it felt suffocating.
She told herself it was because of Taeyang. Something that had begun as blackmail had, at some point, become something she went looking for herself, and even while feeling guilty toward Jiho, she hadn't been able to stop. Then came what happened that day, and afterward, Taeyang stopped reaching out altogether.
And yet something was left over — something she couldn't put a name to. A feeling that it hadn't been enough. She knew exactly where that feeling came from, and she refused to admit it.

Meeting Dahye had been chance. It was the first time in two years. More than her face, what had changed was her bearing. Dahye seemed filled to the brim with self-love now. When eyes landed on her, she didn't deflect them; she simply received them, confident, as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
Watching her, Seoyeon — strangely — couldn't look away. The very thing she herself had spent seven years dodging, this woman simply wore on the outside. As if it were nothing.
"Boring, isn't it?"
Seoyeon didn't answer. It would already be written across her face.
Dahye drew something out of her bag. A small perfume bottle in deep violet glass. The liquid inside sloshed beneath the light and shifted color as it moved — a dark purple that flushed red wherever the light touched.
"What is this?"
"You spray it on, go out — and if you say a certain word to a man who catches the scent..."
"What happens?"
Dahye smiled. There was something a little off about that smile.
"He gets honest. Whatever was already in his heart — it comes out just as it is. The ones who feel nothing, well, they just keep walking."
A brief silence passed.

"It was the subway at rush hour, after work. A car packed with people. I leaned close to the ear of the man standing beside me and whispered."
Seoyeon held her breath.
"What did you say?"
"Take me roughly. Right here."
Seoyeon's fingertips went cold. To actually lean against someone's ear and whisper those words.
"I watched his eyes change on the spot. He turned to look at me. And then it was inside me — shoving my panties aside. On the subway. Surrounded by strangers. I kept my hand over my mouth because I was sure it would make noise every time he moved. And no one knew a thing."
"In the end I came just like that. Right there in the subway car."
The scene painted itself behind her eyes. Too vividly. A hand slipping under a skirt. A packed train. Falling apart with no one the wiser.
As if she were the one there — her whole body flared hot in an instant.
Her fingertips were trembling.
It was humiliating. To react like this from a story alone. She hadn't done anything yet — and already she could feel the inside of her thighs beginning to warm. Her body had responded first, faster than her reason could.
Praying Dahye wouldn't notice, Seoyeon folded her hands in her lap. The hiding posture.
Except that posture — it meant something different now. Less like hiding, more like holding back.
The excitement wouldn't settle.

Back home, she set the perfume bottle on her vanity and stared at it — she had no idea for how long.
A message arrived from Jiho.
She read it and flipped the phone face-down.
Jiho was considerate. Taeyang wasn't considerate at all. And yet she hadn't disliked Taeyang's hands. What she disliked was wanting them herself — because the moment she admitted it, she felt something would change.
She opened the perfume. An exotic, heavy scent. The more of it she breathed in, the more it felt like something deep inside her was stirring awake. She sprayed the inside of her wrist. The side of her neck. The valley between her breasts. As the fragrance mingled with the warmth of her skin, it grew darker, richer.
She stood before the mirror.
Off came the cardigan. The blouse. The bra. Slowly.
It was a familiar spot. Every time she changed clothes in front of this mirror, she made it quick — so she wouldn't look. Just get dressed and go. Because if she looked too long, she was afraid she would have to admit something.
She was afraid. Afraid of having lived with this body all along while pretending not to know it. Jiho didn't know it either. The body Jiho knew as Seoyeon's was — not the real Seoyeon's body. Always covered. Always in the dark.
Guilt rose in her. But the guilt did nothing to change the shape of her chest.
That's right. This is me.
The thought came — for the first time — together with the fear.

The next evening. She pressed the elevator button.
A man stood inside. A neighbor from her own floor — tall, with a hard, chiseled look. The doors slid shut, and the scent of the perfume unfurled through the cramped space.
She had to say it. But her mouth wouldn't open. Merely forming the words in her head set her whole body ablaze.
She hadn't done a single thing yet — and already she could feel herself tightening bit by bit beneath her underwear. Her body had been remembering since yesterday. Since Dahye's story. Since she'd stood before that mirror. It had been preparing all along.
Seoyeon drew in a breath.
And — took one step toward the man.
"Take me roughly."
Very low. Right against his ear.
The man froze for a beat. He looked at her — checking.
Seoyeon nodded.
That was answer enough.
His eyes changed. Instantly.
Her back struck the wall. The convenience-store bag hit the floor. His hand slipped beneath her skirt, pushed her panties aside, and touched her bare. His fingers slid inside.
She was already soaked. The instant he entered, the wet sound of her clinging to him, dragging him in, echoed off the narrow walls. It was humiliating — how honest her body was.
He curled his fingers inward, toward her navel.
"Hah—!"
Her hips jolted reflexively. His crooked fingers tapped that spot slowly. Once. Twice. Three times. Unhurried — but exact. The same place, again and again.
Heat spread from her pelvis up through her lower back. It didn't climb in a straight line; it seemed to billow outward in slow circles. Her forehead came to rest against his shoulder. Standing was getting hard. Every time his fingers moved, the insides of her thighs slid wetly against each other.
Just as she neared her limit — the fingers withdrew.
Seoyeon's eyes flew open.
In place of his fingers — he pushed in something else.
"Haaah—!"
It was different. Completely. The passage his fingers had set aflame clamped shut and then forced wide all at once, thickness and weight pressing out against every inner wall. Something groaned from deep in her belly. Her thoughts cut out.
He began to move, pinning her to the wall — drawing out slowly, then driving deep again. Where their bodies joined came a sound, a thick, clinging sound, losing its way and echoing in the narrow space.
It was shameful. Shameful — and it made her burn hotter still.
He hooked one of her legs up; her knee caught over his arm. The angle changed.
"Haaah—!"
It hit somewhere else entirely — something heavy resonating from the deep of her belly, seeming to climb all the way up to her chest.
The rhythm quickened. The elevator ticked past floor after floor. Seoyeon's hand stabbed the door-close button on reflex. This rhythm must not stop.
"Hah— nn— haaah—"
Every time he drove in, her insides clenched around him, dragging at him. And every time she cried out, he matched her — that angle, that depth.
Her inner walls clamped down hard, once.
"Haaaah—!"
Her toes curled. Her spine pressed hard into the wall. The man stopped, buried to the deepest point. With every contraction, something hot flooded her, filling her to the brim — warm and sticky, it overflowed from where their bodies met and ran down the inside of her thighs. It wouldn't stop.

The man caught his breath. His face had gone red — all the way to his ears.
"I, uh — I'll get going."
He bolted out the doors like he was escaping.
Leaning against the wall, Seoyeon listened to the sound of his retreat. She nearly laughed. That man would remember tonight for the rest of his life. The fact that Seoyeon had been the one to ask, too.
She lowered her hand and slid it along her thigh. Something warm came away on her fingers, stretching threadlike in the light before it broke.
One man. In a cramped elevator.
If it were several men—
The thought surfaced. And shamefully — her still-raw, sensitive insides clenched again at that one thought alone.
Seoyeon stared at her hand for a long time. And then — she decided.

Sitting at her vanity, she thought for a long time.
With this face. This body. That scent. Those words.
She had broken one man apart. He would never know why he'd done what he did. But Seoyeon knew.
A short skirt. A top that bared her chest. She put on the things she'd bought long ago and never once dared wear. She looked in the mirror. It felt foreign — but it was different from yesterday. The fear had shrunk, just a little.
A text arrived from Jiho.
She read it and flipped the phone face-down at once.
She sprayed the perfume between her breasts. Along the line of her throat. On the inside of her wrist.
Then she stepped out the door.
The scent of the perfume walked half a step ahead of her.
