Chapter 239: Awl (4)
"Pfft." When Goblin cracked up, cold eyes turned his way. "Ahem, ahem!" Clearing his throat and acting like he hadn't laughed at all, Goblin avoided those eyes.
Deer intervened and defended him. "Why are you bothering innocent Goblin? It's not his fault you were put in a small body."
Clown couldn't even reply to that sarcastic remark. He just glared at the both of them as he quaked in humiliation.
Is he still going to come here after this?
I was worried for a second, but thankfully Clown was first-class. "...Pshehe." In a situation where it would be understandable for him to burst into tears, Clown forced a laugh. "How childish."
I thought I knew what he was trying to do, the only way of turning things around when you've been unilaterally wrecked.
"This isn't even my body. You think those words can affect me?"
A mental victory. He's in a class of his own.
Clown's words were spoken coolly, but hot resentment spilled into his tone. As for Deer? Those eyes of his were filled with pure joy. In truth, the victor had already been decided, but Deer was a ruthless man who lacked the mercy of a magnanimous winner.
"Hmm, so you admit you're small?"
Was this man the devil?
Clown took a blow to the chest at the very end and eventually chose to remain silent. He had apparently realized that talking only got him hurt.
"Men will be men." When the affair came to an end, Queen chuckled.
I was embarrassed for them. I was sure it was pathetic to watch grown men fight back and forth about something like this. Anyway, the short snafu passed and the gathering continued.
"The conversation got off track. I'll go next." Deer heralded the resumption of the gathering and revealed his piece of information. "Three days ago, the palace captured a spy from Noark. It seems a few were sent out before the barrier was activated."
A captive spy... I wondered if it was Amelia, but for some reason, I didn't think it was. She wasn't the type to be easily captured.
"They plan to kill them once they extract everything they need from them. Oh, after they torture them to the verge of death first." Deer spoke as if to provoke Clown, who was from Noark.
I think it's basically confirmed that Deer is from the palace.
This was another thing brought about by the confrontation with Clown.
"Pshehe, how naive. You think I'd bat an eye at the death of one or two bugs that couldn't even protect themselves?" His voice was full of displeasure. Regardless of whether the spy lived or died, he probably didn't like Deer's smug attitude. "Then it is my turn." As soon as Deer's turn was over, Clown immediately retaliated. "Soon, an assassin will be sent after Bjorn Yandel."
...Huh? What now?
"I heard he's being paraded around as a hero. It'll be so fun to see him die right after he receives his noble title. The palace's reputation will go down the drain!"
Ha, why are we suddenly playing monkey in the middle with my life?
I was startled for a moment at the sudden mention of my name, but annoyance soon crept in.
An assassin when my body hasn't even fully healed yet...
The silver lining was that I learned that this was going to happen in advance. And I guess Deer felt the same.
"Fool," Deer replied, clicking his tongue. "You couldn't control your emotions and even kindly warned the enemy? You really are a baby."
"Tsk, why are you so confident that this is something you'll be able to stop just because you know about it?"
The battle of wills between them was about to start up again. It was fun at first, but it was slowly getting annoying so I interrupted and cut it off there. "I'll go next." When I opened my mouth for the first time in a long while, the hall went quiet in an instant. I glanced around at the members. Fixing my eyes on Queen, I said, "The one who created Ghost Busters was an evil spirit from another world."
Dang, I was going to save that one.
In truth, it was more of a fascination than anything. Originally, I had saved it to use as a reward if someone told me something entertaining.
"This community was not actually created by the GM!"
But if Queen already knew that, she must also know that the entity that created this community was an evil spirit from another realm, so I figured I'd better use this tidbit before it became useless. I was starting to run out of cards I could use to build up Lion's reputation.
"Created by an evil spirit from another world..."
Huh?
"Yeah, that must have been it." When the jewel turned green, Queen nodded as if I'd just confirmed something for her.
What, she didn't know that already? I thought an admin would definitely know.
Then was she not Soul Queen? The thought came to mind, but I didn't know anything for sure yet. It was possible the GM just hadn't told her about that.
As I was thinking this, Goblin spoke up after a short pause, clearly surprised. "W-Wait! An evil spirit from another world? What do you mean by that? You mean there are players here from somewhere other than Earth?"
There was only one thing I could do for him. "The interpretation is up to you."
If you want me to open my mouth, bring me something entertaining. Though even if he does, I'll probably judge it as no fun.
"...I have heard that such people existed. But I always thought it was just a rumor," Deer, who had been lost in thought for a long while, exclaimed like he'd just heard an amazing secret.
This proves that Baekho really is amazing.
As was the case with this tidbit, most of the top-of-the-line information contributing to Lion's image today had come from Baekho Lee's mouth.
"Pshehe, like I thought, it was a good idea to stay." Even Clown, who had been getting kicked around the entire gathering, seemed to think my information was interesting and nodded in satisfaction. He must have thought it was a good idea to put on an iron façade.
"...This makes me more interested." Queen suggested we do another round with a zealous look in her eyes, but unfortunately, the gathering ended on that note because Goblin raised a white flag.
"I'll stop here as I have nothing more to say."
"Then I'll stop here too. I think it will be difficult to find something all four of us don't already know..." Deer also declared his intention to opt out and the gathering naturally came to an end.
"Then, if you'll excuse me." Clown, who normally stayed behind after to chat with the other members, left as soon as the gathering was over. Well, I was sure it would be uncomfortable to stay and talk while everything about him was on display. "Pshehe, I'll make sure to bring something fun next time."
"Fool," Deer replied, clicking his tongue. "You couldn't control your emotions and even kindly warned the enemy? You really are a baby."

Even after all that, Clown still acted friendly toward me. To be honest, I was a bit dumbfounded, but his subservient attitude toward the strong was worth learning from. I guessed there was a reason some people survived for so long.
"Then I'll be leaving."
When I got up and opened the door, I could see Fox waiting for me, leaning against the wall of the empty hallway. "Ah, is it over?"
When I nodded, Fox led me to a room, not the main room with the Round Table, but a nearby reception room. So there were rooms like this here too.
As we sat on the sofa facing each other, a strange silence settled between us. However, whoever opened their mouth here first would be the weaker of the two of us. When I waited patiently, Fox parted her lips first. "Um... thank you for making time for me."
"Your reason?" I asked curtly.
Fox flinched with a whimper, then spoke up cautiously. "Do you know why I called you aside today, Mr. Lion?"
I didn't know, but answering honestly would also be a weak person's move. "Are you trying to sound me out?" I muttered coldly.
"I—no! Th-that's not it...!"
"Looks like you're not that desperate yet." With that, I pretended to get up. That was because she was the one whose business was urgent. I didn't know the exact reason, but I knew that for sure. If it weren't, there would be no reason to set up a separate meeting like this.
I'm sure she needs Lion's power or information for something.
I had gotten my thoughts about Fox in order while the Round Table was still in progress. Ultimately, I figured that if I used this opportunity well, I might be able to learn her identity. So how was that playing out?
"Please, I beg you. If you know my situation, please help me," Fox begged earnestly, but even that conveyed an implication that she couldn't fully trust me.
If I know? So, she's asking me to help her after seeing that I knew Clown's identity.
If her identity was already exposed, she had nothing to lose so she'd take my help. If not, she'd think it over more and decide what to do.
Oh, you wicked...
"You mock me to the end."
I got up from my seat like there was nothing more for me to see here. There was really nothing I could do right now. The truth was, I only knew Clown's identity. I didn't know anything about Fox's circumstances.
"You are not desperate yet," I said. This wasn't the right way to ask for Lion's help. "When you are more desperate, come find me again."
When I reached the door, Fox called out urgently, "J-Just tell me! At least tell me if you know my situation or not!" Her voice was tinged with regret.
I chuckled at that unexpected naivety. "Why should I do that?"
"That's—"
I cut off Fox's answer and said, "This is more fun for me." This was Lion, after all.

In a spacious room reminiscent of a hotel suite, a white man lying on the bed mused to himself and got up. "I wonder what those two are talking about right about now. Eh, no use being curious. They never tell me anything, anyway."
He was used to this. Ever since his school days, he was often left out by his friends for some reason. He had been lucky, though. The virtual currency that he bought out of boredom ended up being a jackpot that had allowed him to live in a house like this—not that that mattered now.

"Whew, less than five hours left."
Checking the time, the man sat on the table in the living room and clicked on the laptop's keyboard. This was the only thing he looked forward to every month. When he was chatting in this virtual space, it made him feel like he was back in the real world.
"Bjorn Yandel, huh?"
The bulletin board he was browsing through was only filled with posts about that guy. So this was the main plot point for today?
[Did you hear that Bjorn Yandel is now a nobleman?]
I'm seriously jealous. There's a lot of talk that he's a player, but what does that matter? Player or not, at that point, I would just want to live here forever.
The man spent his free time commenting on various posts.
Bling0_0: Agreed. A nobleman can have several wives too. I would live here too. I heard his teammates are super pretty.
└arolf5205: The official wife would be Missha. I saw her from a distance and she's really cute.
└Ykbell: I'm for Erwen! I like that elf.
└cherylvander: Isn't a barbarian woman best suited for a real man?
Going into various posts with many views and attracting aggro accordingly, the comments poured in. The man read them all the way through and frowned.
└Pnec: Dumbass. Seeing as you envy that fucking noob, it's obvious you're also a loser.
Okay, I'm going with you today.
The man grinned because he knew those who hadn't been brought up with proper manners were the most fun to take down.
Thinking back, that type of insult seemed to work pretty well.
Remembering the incident that happened earlier, the man chuckled and left a comment.
└Bling0_0: Okay, 1 inch. Yours is 1/10 of Bjorn's. Hands and feet trembling in envy much?
Ding!
It wasn't long before a notification of a new comment popped up.
└Pnec: ...Fuck, you wanna go?
Okay, that was kind of unexpected.
└Bling0_0: What? Is it actually 1 inch?
└Pnec: Why are there so many weird bastards here? Just get lost.
└Bling0_0: You wish. That'll be your future wife. Even a nice woman can't stand 1 inch. Even if you became a noble, you wouldn't be able to keep a concubine around.
└Pnec: ...Hey, where do you live?
As expected, rave reviews exploded on his screen soon after. The man grinned and swarmed to the chaos relentlessly. His opponent also made personal attacks of his own in the middle.
└cherylvander: I was wondering what all the notifications were about. What the hell are you two doing here? lol
└Ykbell: Stop, you guys. I graduated from MIT and my professional opinion is that 1 Inch got totally wrecked.
└1spring: But look at how he's talking. I think he really is 1 inch.
Users who had been watching the fight as spectators joined in on dragging them and soon the user deleted all their comments and ghosted.
Loser.
With victory in his hands, the man stretched, feeling refreshed. After passing the time like that for a long while, the time came for the community to close.
"Mr. Parav, Mr. Parav!" When he opened his eyes, a priest sitting next to him was whisper-yelling and shaking his shoulder. "You can't fall asleep here!"
"Oh, sorry..." The man quickly apologized and continued to listen to the bishop standing at the pulpit. Or, to be more precise, he pretended to. This was not the world inside the community where he could show off his true nature. It was time to put on his faithful paladin act.
Ha, if I knew it was going to be this hardcore, I would've chosen another class.
After about an hour, today's nighttime prayer was over. But before returning to his room, the man took the time to chat with his comrades and build up his relationship with his peers.
Was it because he had just come back from the community? As he listened quietly to their conversation out of exhaustion, one of them turned to him worriedly. "Parav, are you okay? You don't look so well."
"Is it because of that? Shake it off. How is it your fault that you weren't able to enter the labyrinth that day because of an upset stomach?"
"I'm just glad you're alive."
"God was on your side."
His comrades appeared to be greatly mistaken, but Parav didn't correct them. He just nodded his head in sorrow. "Yeah, I should shake it off."
To be honest, it hadn't even been an upset stomach. He had just had an ominous feeling that day and made up an excuse to be lazy. The next day, when the pillars of fire erupted in the different Dimension Squares, he felt lightheaded.
"Why don't you go get some rest?"
"No, I will stay here with you all. I think that will be better."
"...If you say so."
Afterward, his comrades continued to chat. Even here, that barbarian was a hot topic. "That man, I hear he's going to become a nobleman?"
"I think it's a good thing. From what I heard from the priest who was with him that day, he is a truly virtuous man."
Like religious figures who valued humility as a virtue, the man's comrades praised the new hero without any hint of envy or suspicion.
So boring.
As expected, it was hard to find the carefree nature of the community out here. Feeling claustrophobic for some reason, the man blurted out unwittingly, "Isn't that man a bit suspicious?"
"Suspicious?"
"It's not common to build such a reputation in the first year, is it?"
"That's true, but..."
"Maybe he is an evil spirit?"
It sounded like a joke, but he was actually being sincere. Public opinion in the community was leaning in the other direction, but Parav thought everything Bjorn Yandel had pulled off so far was impossible unless he was a player. But what were his comrades' opinions?
Silence followed his suggestion. Of course, it did not last for long.
"Hahaha!" His comrades laughed in unison.
"Evil spirit, how can that be?"
"He is a fellow Captain Krovitz has taken a liking to. It's no good to be so suspicious."
"No evil spirit knows how to sacrifice and lay down their life for their comrades like that."
"My friend, you are joking too much today!"
Parav felt his face grow hot. Of course, it wasn't an unfamiliar sensation to him. Ever since he was young, he'd always been teased like this and left out of the group.
Yeah, I'm sure I'm just jumping to the wrong conclusions again.
Parav sighed and headed back to his room. This always happened.
"Whew, less than five hours left."
