Chapter 177: Doppelganger (2)
Always think before you act—that was the advice I gave to Ainar on my first day here. They were not just empty words then, either. In fact, this motto had saved my life in the face of countless hardships.
God damn it.
So to that end... after taking a moment to curse my luck, I took stock of my current situation.
"To think I would see a familiar face here."
First, one thing could be gleaned from this line: she hadn't come here looking for me.
"This is kind of a problem."
Second, she was just as bewildered by the situation as I was. However, unlike the last piece of information, there was a different nuance here—it was almost like she was suggesting there was another reason she needed to hide her identity other than the obvious.
I thought Noark was sealed off... Then is she here as a spy or something? And she was made to leave before it was sealed off?
Well, it was hard to be sure yet. There could be other hidden factors. Right now, only one thing was for sure.
"Well, I'll just have to beat you up and erase your memory like last time."
Even despite all of this, she had no intention of killing me. In other words, I could at least rest assured in that sense.
As long as I don't accidentally step on a mine.
I just had to be careful so that she wouldn't find out that the memory removal pill didn't work on me. That way, the situation wouldn't take a turn for the worse. Thus, my basic approach here was decided. Although I had no intention of willingly taking the pill and incapacitating myself, with that bit of insurance, I had nothing to lose.
What did I say in the sewer again?
It was a few months ago, but I could easily remember it. When we were accidentally reunited in the sewer, this was the first thing I had asked. "...Why are you here to kill me? I kept my promise, didn't I?" If I wanted to pretend my last memory of her was from the Land of the Dead, I had to ask the same thing again.
"That's the same thing you said back then."
"...Back then?"
When I looked at her uncomprehendingly, the woman shook her head and continued. "But your face looks much calmer this time."
I ended up chuckling.
Calmer, huh?
Was it that obvious? "Our oath is still valid," I said bluntly. "Why not pretend you didn't see me?"
"Then take this." The woman took a pill out of her pocket, entirely dark and somewhat damp, and threw it at me. "That pill erases a person's memories. If you take that, then you won't remember anything that happened today."
For a second, I had the thought that taking this pill might be the neatest way to resolve this situation. But no, it had to be a last resort. "How can I trust you?" Taking this would render me unconscious. What if this woman wanted my equipment? What if she opened it and found the Dragon Slayer Sword in my sub-space ring? That was a land mine in itself.
"Do you have another option?"
"Why do you think I don't?"
Compared to when we met in the Land of the Dead, I was several hundred times stronger. Even compared to my sewer days, I was at least ten times stronger than I used to be. Above all, this was not a dark cellar with no one around to help me. It was an aboveground city with law and order.
"With just one shout, my teammates will wake up. You can't handle all of them on your own." There was no reason for me to give in to this woman.
"...I see it was arrogance, not calm."
"You can see for yourself."
Despite my bold words, the woman was silent. She may have called me arrogant, but she knew that things were different than they used to be. A sudden, heavy silence fell in the empty hallway as the day began to dawn.
The first to speak was the other side. "Barbarian." The woman took a step forward and called out to me.
Instead of answering, I turned around. There, sure enough, I saw her clone. This was the Doppelganger ability, Self-Replication.
Dash!
[Amelia Rainwales has cast Asura's Kick.]
The doppelganger that had silently appeared behind me leaped into the air and swung a heavy foot. It was the same move that struck my head last time. I immediately raised my arms to protect my face.
Bang!
The tingling blow jolted through my wrist, but that was all.
With my current physical resistance?
Well, the hit did seem to have cracked a bone, but actually, I couldn't tell for sure. I couldn't even feel pain as trivial as that because of my Pain Resistance stat.
"Behelahhh!" Calling out the name of my ancestral god, I slammed a fist the size of a watermelon into the clone's face.
Pop!
As soon as the clone took the hit, it disappeared into a puff of smoke. I hurriedly turned in the direction of her original body in anticipation of a simultaneous attack, but the woman just stood there. "How did you know?"
Oh, she never thought I'd be able to stop that move. "Sound," I answered honestly.
At some point during our conversation, all sounds in the hallway had disappeared. Although it may have been late at night, it was a markedly strange phenomenon. Since Ainar's snoring easily penetrated through wooden doors, as soon as the sound disappeared, I knew the woman was planning a surprise attack. And as soon as she stepped forward, I figured out the trick. Self-Replication was something I had suffered through once already.
The radius within which the clone can be summoned is five yards.
She had obviously been too far away to summon one right behind me without stepping forward. Since we'd fought each other twice already, I was able to counter it.
I repeated what I said earlier. "My offer is still valid. Just pretend you didn't see me and disappear."
As expected, I got a different answer this time. "...How can I trust you?"
I smiled and threw her own words back at her. "What other option do you have?"
I didn't know what ability she had used, but it seemed like it only lasted for a short amount of time. I had started to hear Ainar's snoring again a few seconds ago. Now, if I really screamed...
Creak.
The door opened at that moment. "Bjorn? Who arrre you talking to?" Missha appeared through a crack in the door, rubbing her eyes.
"I'll explain later. Go inside."
"Ah!"
I reached out and closed the door before it could fully open.
"Hey! You horrrible bastard!" Missha flew into a rage after banging her head on the door, but it couldn't be helped. That wasn't important right now. "Hey! Open it! I said open! It's a girrrl, isn't it? Erwen? Is she back again?!"

I put my weight on the door and stared silently at the woman. The message in my eyes was very simple: Now what will you do?
I got my answer after a brief pause. "If I say I'll leave, will you believe me?" In other words, would I not try to retaliate?
I answered without hesitation. "I'll believe you." After all, this was the same woman who let me go on an oath and oath alone, and I hadn't reported her either. I had even stopped Missha from coming out of her room. "I just want to let you know, I don't care what you do. I just don't want to get mixed up with you."
"...I'm sure," the woman muttered in a slightly melancholic tone, but that wasn't the response I was seeking.
"So, your answer?"
"I will go."
"And promise to never come looking for me again?"
"I didn't come for you. But... if you want, I will promise that too."
At those words, I lowered my guard a little. Although a mere promise didn't mean much in this world, not everyone was like that.
"I don't want to kill a barbarian with my own hands if I can avoid it... That was our agreement in the first place."
Even in the Land of the Dead, she had saved me because of a promise. The weight of a promise was different to her.
I thought of her as a lunatic back then, but it turns out she isn't entirely like that...
"Then go, human woman."
At my words, she nodded quietly. Then she turned around and descended the stairs.
Click, clack.
The further away the sound of her footsteps got, the more relieved I felt. I was really glad this had ended without a fight. I was not entirely ready to withstand someone's aura yet. City and teammates or not, if she had truly wanted to kill me, I would have had to see blood too.
"Phew..." I would only be able to sleep if I saw her leaving for myself, so I headed to the stairs.
Click.
The woman was on the last step, about to step down to the first floor. But it seemed she'd noticed my presence. "...I'm not a human woman." She swung around and looked into my eyes. "Amelia Rainwales." Leaving behind those words, she disappeared like smoke.
My mind went blank for a moment. "What the..." That made it seem like we'd meet again.
Knock, knock.
I knocked on Ainar's door first, but the sound of snoring was the only response I got and the door did not open. Unlike Missha's door, which swung open right away.
"Hey! Who was that woman out therrre?!"
"A peddler."
"What?"
"Let's just go to sleep. I'm tired."
"Huh? Oh? Uh... uh? Sleep? Here? Why?"
I tossed a pillow onto the bare floor and laid down. I really didn't want to do this, but...
"R-Right. B-Because you're tirrred. S-S-Sleep up here, though. Not on the floor..."
"That's a bit... I'll just sleep here."
"Hm? Then, w-why are you here?"
Because I was kind of scared to sleep alone tonight.

The days passed and it was once again time to enter the labyrinth. We had an hour and a half left until the portal opened. At exactly the scheduled time, Raven arrived. With that, everyone was gathered.

The days passed and it was once again time to enter the labyrinth. We had an hour and a half left until the portal opened. At exactly the scheduled time, Raven arrived. With that, everyone was gathered.
"Fortunately, no one is late this time."
We first cast the binding spell then got moving. Our meeting spot this time had been Mr. Bear's tavern. We decided that just taking him with us from the get-go would be easier for all of us than waiting an hour for him there.
"...There are definitely fewer people than usual."
The road leading to Dimension Square was oddly quiet. I could understand why. Since the times were what they were, everyone probably wanted to take a break and assess the situation.
But what's this?
When I arrived at Dimension Square, I froze. The scene here was completely different from the quiet alleys we'd just walked through.
"Everyone please line up!" The number of civil servants present was several times higher than usual. I could also see soldiers. Hundreds of groups comprised of one knight and four soldiers were scattered all over the place.
Are they trying to restrict entry into the labyrinth?
The thought came to mind, but fortunately it wasn't like that. "Here you go." Standing at the end of the long line, a government official hurriedly approached us and handed out two items. One was a video recorder, and the other... honestly, I had no idea.
"What is this necklace?"
"It's an identification tag that shows you're on our side."
"Identification tag?"
"Yes." The official explained a few new precautions they were taking in the labyrinth and warned us that we could not lose the tag. It was a lengthy lecture, as was typical for someone who worked in administration, but the gist was simple.
If we lose it, we're fucked.
Without an identification tag, we would become kill targets. Conversely, killing someone without a tag carried no punishment.
No wonder they've been so quiet. It's because they were plotting this.
Seeing as they were only telling us this just before the labyrinth opened, it seemed the government had managed to maintain thorough secrecy. As a resident of Rafdonia, that wasn't necessarily a bad thing.
"B-Bjorn... arrre we going to be okay?"
"Why wouldn't we be? This means the army is going to protect us in the labyrinth."
"Oh, does it?"
"Still, one thing is for certain. The rumor of there being a portal in the underground city is true."
We chatted and waited, and the portal opened after about five minutes. The soldiers entered first, then it was time for the adventurers to wait in line.
"...We might not get in."
"Come on, Mr. Urikfried. That won't happen," Raven said, but as time passed, her expression hardened.
The portal shrank as the line got shorter. I was actually more than happy about this turn of events.
Hmm, if things play out like this, I won't have to explain anything.
Originally, I intended to confess to the incident from my first trip into the labyrinth so I could use the experience point copy bug. After watching him for a month, I knew Mr. Bear was someone who placed great value on trust, and Raven was trustworthy in a different sense. The incident with the special appraiser played a big part in my decision.
"If we tell them, they'll probably make several times more on the information. I refuse to let that happen."
She never did anything that benefited someone else, so I had planned to reveal this method and accumulate free experience points starting this month.
"What are you doing!? Get in, quick!"
"If you're not going in, get out of the way!"
With the way things were currently going, I thought it was possible to take advantage of the bug naturally. Even I thought the current situation was risky. It helped that actually seeing the soldiers here frightened some adventurers, making them hesitate to enter and slowing down the line.
"No more! Everyone, please stand back!"
"What!? W-What do you mean?! I waited for over an hour!"
Admission was cut off when there were about ten people left in the queue.
"A-Are we going to have to go home like this!?"
"Huh, I didn't think they'd really cut us off."
"It's because you jinxed it, Mr. Urikfried."
"...Are you blaming me for this?"
Raven sighed. "Whatever. Let's just go back."
Everyone seemed resigned.
Now, you're all making this barbarian sad. You're just going to give up already?
"Bjorn, what arrre you doing? Is something up ahead?"
"Now."
Eventually, the portal's light began to fade. Normally, this was around the time when someone would have shouted, "The portal will be closed soon!"
"Everyone, get on my back."
"Huh?"
There was no time to explain, so I activated Giantization. My body grew in an instant.
"W-What are you doing!? It's illegal to activate a superhuman ability outside specified locations!"
Paying a fine was no problem. It wasn't even that much. Unless you injured someone, it was only about three hundred thousand stones.
I'll take this out of the team fund.
I immediately scooped the four of them into my arms and started running blindly ahead.
"Hey! What are you doing!?"
"Stop!"
I ignored all the cries of the civil servants. This would end with just a small fine, anyway. There was no reason not to go in. Just think of how much we would earn after just one day of hunting on the fifth floor.
"Kyaa!"
"No way—are you just going to enter?"
"Behelahhh!"
Was my shout answer enough? Ainar started cackling from her place tucked under my left arm. "Hahaha! Yes, Bjorn! Great warrior!" Now that was a barbarian.
Boom! Boom!
I sprinted through the empty plaza with a satisfied smile on my face.
Shaaaaa!
The light of the portal shrank to the size of a person and began to fluctuate. Soon, the light flashed and embraced us.
