34. Set Items (Part 1)
The item Logan handed me was a document infused with magic.
'An item that removes class-exclusive effects.'
A document that lifted class restrictions on items. It was exactly what I needed right now. With this, I could finally use the heroic-grade crossbow I'd obtained from that Orion employee.
'Must've been hard to get.'
I knew about these items, but they weren't easy to come by. The reason was simple: hardly anyone sought them out. In truth, removing class restrictions held little meaning for most people. Would a swordsman benefit from using a crossbow? Or a mage or summoner? They wouldn't need it much either.
With no demand, supply was scarce too. But it was different for me. As a Weapon Summoner, I could put it to very good use.
"Your handling of this job was quite impressive. I've hired many contractors before, but no one quite like you. So... consider this a bribe."
Logan flashed an awkward smile as he spoke.
'A bribe,' huh. Just as I'd expected.
'He wants to be my sponsor.'
Well, I might do the same in his shoes. I'd protected the real document he was hiding, after all. And I'd handled the job perfectly. Sure, the president's office had been blown to bits... but if things had gone as planned, the entire Esteno Company would've vanished. I'd stopped that.
"I understand perfectly. Here's my card. I'd like to maintain a good relationship going forward as well."
"Hahaha, thank you for understanding. Here's mine."
Our relationship with Logan might change from here on out.
"No misunderstandings, please—this is just me hoping to offer some help as we build a good partnership. Is that alright?"
Hm. We hadn't formalized the sponsorship yet, but he was offering preemptive service? No reason to refuse.

I left Logan's mansion and returned to the hotel. I'd secured the first set item; now for the second.
I hadn't pinpointed the second set's location originally, but while handling the company quest, I'd gotten a message from the merchant guild president, Jeston.
The underground auction. A place selling items through shadowy channels. It opened in two days. That gave me some time.
Normally, once you acquire a set item, subsequent ones from the same set link up with the existing effects. Meaning the set item at the auction would match the first one.
'A Weapon Summoner set item, though... first time for everything.'
I examined the ring Logan had given me.
◈ Strength +7
◈ Agility +7
◈ <The One Who Summons Weapons Set>
◈ (2-Set) Summon a clone of the weapon's wielder. The summoned clone uses your skills.
◈ (3-Set) Inject mana to enlarge the weapon. Size scales with mana invested.
◈ (4-Set) Summon the [Ancient Weapon Arsenal].
The set effects were confirmed. A set made for Weapon Summoners. These options were insane.
'Even the first effect is overpowered.'
It summoned a clone of the weapon's wielder—one that used my skills too. And... it enlarged weapons, plus a [Ancient Weapon Arsenal] summon I'd never even seen. A whole arsenal of rare ancient weapons. How many were inside?
'Gotta hunt down the rest of this set fast.'
Set items varied wildly by class, with unique effects per set. I might have to pay Jeston extra to speed things up.
'And then.'
With the set effects confirmed, another task awaited. I pulled out the item Logan had given me.
◈ Apply to an item to remove its class restriction.
A4-sized parchment inscribed with a magic spell. Applying it to an item lifted the class exclusivity. No need to hesitate.
I immediately pulled out the crossbow and used the document.
Shhrrk.
As I recited the incantation, light poured from the document, enveloping the crossbow and seeping into it completely.
◈ Attack Power: 230-350
◈ Agility +15
◈ Strength +15
◈ Piercing greatly increased.
◈ Destructive power greatly increased.
◈ Reload speed greatly increased.
◈ Crossbowman Exclusive (Removed)
A change had occurred. "(Removed)" now marked the exclusive message. I could equip and use it now.
'Let's check.'
[Weapon Summoner] (Unique) Lv. 16
HP: 350 / 350 | MP: 540 / 540
Possessed Effects:
◈ [Powerful Slash]
◈ [Look On]
◈ [Reflection]
◈ [All Skills +2]
◈ [Mana +20%]
◈ [Attack Speed +60%]
◈ [All Slash Power +20%]
◈ [Piercing, Destructive Power, Reload Speed +50%]
Massive stat changes. Just equipping the ring and crossbow had boosted my strength and agility by over 20 each. That alone was a huge gain, but it didn't stop there.
'Piercing, destructive power, and reload speed all up.'
For other classes, those were crossbow-only buffs. But not for me. As a Weapon Summoner, they applied to all my weapons. Attack power aside, these options alone transformed my arsenal.
'Add the set effects, and I could take on Descartes.'
I was steadily preparing to face him. Once Descartes fell... I glanced at [Yodo, Barseto].
'I'd claim the second fragment too.'
Whatever the second option was, no doubt my power would surge.

The next day. I'd head to the auction city tomorrow. With some time left, I decided to check the tattoo artist's traces again.
Screeech.
Still no gear detected in Brockton, so I revisited the tattoo artist's mansion... Good call.
'The traces have changed.'
The place was even more wrecked. Blood soaked the floor and walls now—traces that hadn't been there before. Meaning these were new.
'...That.'
Right then, I spotted a sword on the floor. Not something the tattoo artist would use. The attackers'? Either way, worth checking.
Swish.
As I picked it up, memories flooded in. I skipped the trivia and dove into the core ones here.
'...The tattoo artist was captured.'
Descartes had made another move. He wouldn't normally target this place now. His hordes had overrun it, and the tattoo artist fought back. The sword's owner died just before the capture.
'Hurry.'
The tattoo artist's whereabouts were confirmed. He'd been dragged to the tattoo artist's lab.
* * *
I prepared to leave immediately. Secure the gear fast, then hit Descartes' lab. The issue? His lab's location.
It was unique—always shifting. But I needed the second set item too. No time, so I called Jackson.
"Long time no see."
"Good to see you, big bro!"
"...Wel. Come."
"Hello!"
Jackson, Michael, Alpano, Jerome. Jackson's crew filed into my room. They looked unchanged, except Jackson.
"How's the mechanical arm?"
"This? It's fine. Pretty common in Cherwin."
Clank. Clank.
He waved his mechanical arm. He'd accepted my suggestion. It was his fate anyway.
'But it looks way different from what I remember. Must change after more mods here.'
Unlike the bulky ones I knew, his was normal arm-sized. Surely packed new abilities. I'd check later.
"So, you want us to find this?"
Jackson checked the paper I'd given him. I'd sketched Descartes' lab and likely spots.
"Yeah. You'll know it when you see it. Grotesque-looking thing."
"...Huh, yeah. Hard to miss as a building. Don't worry."
"The boss was thrilled, y'know? Kept saying he'd repay the favor. Heh heh heh."
Michael whispered, hand over mouth.
"Anyway, no time to waste, so we're off. That truck outside?"
Jackson pointed to the truck waiting at the hotel—Logan's [Mana-Coated] gift.
"Just tell the driver the destination."
"Whoa, you got a sponsor? What've you been up to?!"
Jerome gawked. Not official yet, but... I was starting to feel the power of sponsorship.
Jackson's crew headed out. I boarded another vehicle with April—the large mana-coated sedan Logan had loaned before.
"Where to?"
"Averium, please."
"Yes, sir."
A city advanced in magic, hosting the underground auction. The car sped toward Averium. Faster than trains—no stops, roads wide open unlike modern ones.
We arrived in the magic city, Averium.
* * *
Averium's buildings were Gothic spires. Ten-story structures everywhere, with iron tracks 20 meters up in the central district. Floating trains, of course.
Our destination was near the tracks—under a massive stone bridge supporting them.
"This the place? Just vagrants everywhere, no auction in sight?"
April gaped at the sprawl under the bridge. But it was right.
I scanned the vagrants for a black-hooded giant...
'There.'
Not hard—his bulk stood out.
"Here for the underground auction."
"......"
He lifted his hood slightly. Not human. A troll tamed by magic.
-Grrr.
It understood, pointing to the wall. Unknown script—an cipher. I had to answer right, or leave or die.
"Invisible."
I knew it, courtesy of Jeston. Ciphers changed, but he'd tipped me off.
-Grrr.
The troll nodded. Light flared on the script, splitting the wall. A hidden portal appeared.
"Let's go."
Shing. Shing.
April, flustered, trailed me. We stepped through.
"Take a tameable Bengal tiger!"
"Dwarf-forged armor! Cheap, come see!"
Another world inside. Alley-like space lined with buildings, tents like a night market. Merchants hawking oddities.
Bustling crowds. We pushed through to advance.
'Auction starts afternoon.'
11 a.m. now—one hour till open. We hit a tavern to eat. Could browse, but I only needed one item. Rest first.
"Whoa, look! A troll trapped inside! Wow, what's that? Merchant drank a potion and vanished?!"
April marveled like a kid. No social experience, and nobility never visited illegal spots like this.
But the real shock awaited.
"Th-that... a statue?"
She pointed above our tavern. A massive drake statue perched there, wings folded yet covering half the building.
Was that there before?
"Probably..."
It... blinked. Not moving, so I'd assumed statue. Alive? A drake tamer?
"......"
Even I was surprised. Drake tamers were rare even among tamers.
Screeech.
We slipped into the tavern, avoiding the drake's glare. Crowded—folks awaiting the auction.
"...You sure? Boss really ordered this?"
"Obviously. You think I'm nuts?"
We sat, ordered. But the group behind us grated.
Bare torsos, hair slicked up like delinquents. Scavengers, by looks. Normal for underground auctions.
"Whew, finally some cash. Rob the auction?"
Listening closer: robbing the auction? Insane, even for Descartes' lunatics.
"This makes it work. Know what it is? Blinding bomb—fucks up everyone's vision."
"Kekeke, pop it, grab loot, bounce?"
Blinding bomb, huh. Yeah, that'd enable the crazy. But how'd scavengers get one? Pricey for them.
Suspicious.
'Auction's about to go to hell.'
Hm. Intervene now? No real reason—unless they touched my item.
'...Unless they touch mine?'
I pondered. Scavengers don't solo. Only two here, but crew nearby. Stopping them pointless; chaos inevitable.
'Let 'em rob it—free gear for me.'
Their plan would succeed. I guaranteed it—that item's potent. Might as well have them snag my target.
"April."
"Yes?"
"Set item with effects? Pricey, right? 20th lot, so prep cash. Starts at least 10 million babel."
"Hm, loan? For you, I'd try... but I heard... (omitted)."
I leaked info via April. They went quiet, listening. But April...
Why so serious? Sounded reluctant, dragging in family guarantees.
"Hear that?"
"Yeah. Good intel."
They whispered. April, seriously—not asking for a loan, drop it. Why bring up your house's credit...?
