Must Win (2)
“We are live from the Coventry Building Society Arena, where the second half between Coventry City and Luton Town is about to get underway. The players are emerging from the tunnel.”
“Unlike Coventry, who appear completely unchanged from the first half, Luton Town have made an eye-catching tactical switch.”
“Indeed. As if determined to make up for that dreadful first half, Giovanni Santos has been introduced in place of Hughes Cotter. This clearly signals Gordon’s intent to slow the tempo down and take a more patient, controlled approach to buildup play.”
“Precisely. Against a Coventry side that prepared a foolproof counter to aerial balls and possessed a lethal transition threat, Luton want to regain stability and build through the thirds step by step.”
“Hoping to see Lee Han unlock this defense on the ground, the referee blows his whistle, and the second half begins!”
As Luton Town began circulating the ball, Manager Carsley Wagner’s eyes widened in visible agitation.
‘...They actually switched it?’
It wasn't as if Luton had never altered their tactics mid-match before, but they had only experimented with it a handful of times early in the season. What was more, Lee Han’s pronounced struggles during those transitions had caused Luton to abandon such reckless in-game gambles altogether.
Yet what was unfolding right before his eyes was an unmistakable tactical overhaul.
It wasn't merely a matter of swapping a player or two; every single detail, from individual positioning to the spacing between the lines, had completely transformed.
The shift was so drastic that one didn't even need a tablet to analyze it—it was glaringly obvious just by watching the pitch.
Carsley stared at Gordon Morton, who, unlike in the first half, was watching the pitch with an intrigued, knowing smile.
Whether Luton were brimming with genuine confidence or simply grasping at straws, Carsley couldn't tell. But an inexplicable dread crept down his spine—an instinct honed over years of high-level management.
And that dread soon became reality.
“Jackson feeds Dominic. Instead of surging forward this time, Dominic lays it off to Emir Vincent-Young, and Emir finds Lee Han with a sharp one-touch pass!”
“Taking advantage of the brief slack in Coventry’s pressing, the ball is fed forward in the blink of an eye! Both wingers push high, and Lee Han finally begins to advance!”
Unlike the first half, where he had been marooned inside the penalty box, Lee Han dropped slightly deeper to receive the ball before effortlessly bypassing an opposing midfielder occupying the space behind him.
Then, calmly assessing his surroundings, he floated the ball with a deft flick to evade an incoming slide tackle. By subtly delaying the tempo, he bought precious seconds for his Luton teammates to make their runs.
“Space opens up in the final third! Emir darts into the channel, and Lee Han threads the pass as naturally as breathing!”
“With just a handful of crisp passes, the defensive wall that stood impenetrable throughout the first half is torn wide open! Emir reaches the touchline, checks back, and drives in a cutback!”
Coventry City, still locked into their first-half shape, had no answer for Emir’s cutback.
Slipping deftly past Coventry’s disoriented defenders, the pass found its way to an unmarked Lee Yeon.
‘Even Han could’ve buried this one.’
As the ball rolled to him with the perfect weight, he swept it low between the defender’s legs, striking it like an extension of a pass.
There was no need to worry about the goalkeeper's belated dive.
Ripppp!
The netting billowed violently.
And along with it, the hearts of Coventry City’s manager and supporters sank into despair.
“Lee Han! Lee Han! Lee Han! It’s a GOAL!”
“Drifting brilliantly into the vacant pocket between the lines, Lee Han breaks Luton Town’s deadlock and registers his twenty-ninth league goal of the season! Just one shy of thirty now!”
“Flawless chemistry with Emir! They’ve washed away every shred of first-half frustration in one clean sweep!”
In the arena that had fallen dead silent in an instant, only the traveling Luton Town supporters erupted into ecstatic cheers.
Coventry City did not take the kickoff right away after the equalizer; several players ran over to the touchline to consult their manager.
When the match resumed a few minutes later, Coventry had abandoned their custom game plan designed specifically for Luton Town and reverted to their standard league setup.
Now that Luton had dismantled their aerial-focused trap, sticking with it would only result in conceding goal after goal in the exact same manner.
Carsley Wagner had been forced to make a substitution and switch back to their default system—a bitter pill to swallow, yet the only pragmatic choice available.
The trouble was, pragmatic didn't mean optimal.
“It’s only level! Keep running! Play our game!”
He did his best to rally his squad from the technical area, but the broadcast cameras caught him anxiously chewing on his fingernails.
“Ah, Manager Carsley. He’s biting his nails in sheer agitation.”
“They were virtually flawless in the first half, so to see the scoreline wiped clean and Luton Town coming alive despite playing away from home—it’s no wonder he’s rattled.”
“Still, the score is 1-1. Lee Han’s goal stands. Now Coventry must weather the remainder of the second half.”
Despite the commentators’ words, Coventry struggled to plug the gaps created by their abrupt mid-match tactical overhaul—and Luton Town were never going to let such an opportunity slip.
“Wright switches play with a raking diagonal! Emir, completely unmarked on the left flank, brings it down with composure and drives forward.”
“Adler scrambles over to close him down, but before he can arrive, Emir slips it inside to Kayden in midfield.”
“Kayden uses a sharp body feint to shake off Coventry’s retreating striker, Ordelson, and lays it off to Lee Han! Superb footwork!”
Buoyed by confidence gained in recent matches, Kayden dismantled his marker with crisp, tidy footwork—perhaps lacking Dominic’s flair, but ruthlessly effective all the same.
Then, just as they had drilled countless times in training, he fed Lee Han with mechanical precision.
“Lee Han takes possession—does he have glue on his boots? The driven pass sticks to his feet without a tremor!”
“With just two touches, he dummies past two closing defenders and strides forward! There is no stopping this man!”
“Luton’s entire attacking unit charges into the penalty box! What will Lee Han do?!”
Luton Town’s synchronized forward surge caught Coventry’s backline in utter disarray. Having spent the entire match bracing for aerial duels, the defenders—despite having reverted their tactics—had been given zero time to adapt.
At best, all they could manage was instinctively dropping deeper to track the runners in front of them.
Yet a defense retreating in panic meant that the pocket of space right outside the penalty box, not yet occupied by their midfield line, was left wide open.
In that scenario, the optimal choice for Lee Yeon was obvious: not a pass, but a shot.
Harnessing the full momentum of his stride, he swung his leg, channeling explosive power into the ball in stark contrast to his earlier finesse finish.
BOOM!
The flawless strike that Lee Han had watched hundreds, thousands of times in replays materialized once more upon the pitch.
Departing his boot with a thunderous crack, the ball arrowed in a vicious, perfectly straight trajectory, slamming into the top right corner of the net before the goalkeeper could even flinch.
“The turnaround! Luton Town take the lead through Lee Han’s brace!”
“What an extraordinary goal! A laser-guided rocket right into the top corner! The keeper didn’t even twitch!”
“Nothing a goalkeeper can do about a strike like that. Utterly unstoppable.”
“And with that, Lee Han reaches the monumental milestone of thirty league goals before the first half of the season has even concluded! Thirty goals and ten assists in twenty-two league matches! Absolutely sensational!”
“We don’t know how the second half of the campaign will unfold, but if he maintains even half of this scoring rate, he will shatter the post-rebrand Championship single-season record of forty-three goals. This pace is truly beyond belief!”
The moment the comeback was secured, Lee Yeon grabbed the crest on his shirt, tugging it out as if to rip it off, and planted a passionate kiss on it.
In the away end, celebration tipped over into sheer ecstasy. Among the home supporters, disbelief turned to groans of despair.
Taking in the contrasting sea of emotions, Lee Yeon slyly raised three fingers.
“Hat-trick! Hat-trick!”
“Lee Han just signaled a hat-trick!”
“There are fifteen minutes left!”
The fans who had endured the exhausting away trip rose as one, bellowing Lee Han's chant into the cold Coventry sky.
“Oi, don’t you usually pull that stunt before the match starts?” Emir muttered.
“If you've got a problem with it, feel free to call your shot before kickoff and go bag three yourself. You only call these things when they're actually within reach,” Lee Yeon retorted.
“I shouldn't have bothered asking.”
“Just make sure you feed your star striker so I don't look like a fool. Keep up, peasant.”
“...Swear you lose your marbles every now and then.”
Emir smirked, thoroughly ruffling Lee Yeon’s hair under the guise of celebration before hustling back to his position.
Less than five minutes after Coventry City kicked off for the third time:
“Wright whips in a cross—Lee Han gets a toe to it, redirecting it toward goal, and it crosses the line!”
“HAT-TRICK! Lee Han delivers on the promise he made to the fans! His thirty-first goal of the league campaign!”
“Lee Han roars! In this moment, not a single defender on that pitch could contain him!”
With the completion of the hat-trick, Coventry City’s last lingering ember of hope was snuffed out.
With every passing match, more and more eyes were turning toward Luton Town’s unstoppable charge.
‘Is this a good thing?’
Watching the fans’ impassioned reactions, I drifted off to sleep.
