Chapter Title: Dogfight
-----------------------------------------------------------------
A woman burst out from under the body of the burly man who'd collapsed asleep.
She glared at the hulking guy who'd jumped her, then glanced briefly at the rebar man.
Only now feeling the shock from her fall, she clutched her waist and stood there for a moment, scanning her surroundings—but there was nothing to see.
Then she went straight for the coins.
Nice. Yeah, grab what you can.
I liked how she was securing her loot even after leaving me as the sole survivor amid a dozen dead guys.
Damn right. In a dog-eat-dog world like this, you needed that kind of sharp judgment to stay alive.
Alright. Can't drag this out forever, but it's time to think.
If anyone's watching, now's their last chance. If that woman slips away, she'll take with her the coins piled up from ten... or however many guys there were... and her own fresh appeal out of our grasp.
No one in their right mind would let her go. Plus, we had prime bait like the rebar guy and the hulk.
Come on... make your move. Make your move.
The woman ducked into the International Education Hall.
Why go in there? Shouldn't she be running? Into a building at a time like this? What the hell?
Is there a path inside? Oh... right, there's an underground passage to the main academic building? Yeah, I think there is.
I've never been in the International Education Hall myself, but I vaguely remember a route from the academic building leading there.
If she bolts through the academic building, that could get tricky for me...
There we go!
Two guys burst out, chasing after her.
Worth the wait. No way they were only eyeing the rebar guy and the hulk after all that chaos.
And trailing those two was another guy, slipping out quietly to follow.
Perfect. That should be everyone, right? If not, the fear of losing out on the prey would drag the rest out.
The last guy who popped out hesitated when he spotted the rebar man and the hulk.
Smart choice. Better to snag the two sure things than risk an uncertain 2-on-1.
The guy pulled a hammer from his bag.
It was a hefty one, with tape meticulously wrapped around the head—clearly, he was no stranger to this kind of work.
He swung with full force, smashing the hulk's head. The body vanished instantly.
Casually pocketing the coins, he headed for the rebar guy.
I put the hammer guy to sleep right as he finished off the rebar man, and he crumpled.
I approached and swung my machete.
Holy shit. What the...? Three guys, and over 20,000 coins?
Who the hell had that much? Well, none of them looked like total pushovers.
They're probably all crossing the River Styx together amicably by now anyway.
I hurried into the International Education Hall.
Two guys were chasing the woman ahead, so I needed to catch up fast... Where's the way down to the basement?
"Kyaaah!"
A piercing scream from the woman echoed out.
Inside what looked like a large lecture hall, I crept up and peeked through the open door using my mirror.
One guy was holding the woman down, while another hiked up her skirt.
She'd already been raped by that Chinese boss earlier, and now it was happening again.
One had her arms pinned, groping her chest, while the other dropped his pants.
Since she'd just been assaulted before, her privates were exposed the moment her skirt went up.
The guy wasted no time thrusting into her.
"It hurts! Stop, you fucker! Ah! Don't!"
I put all three to sleep.
Screaming like that would just draw every horny bastard nearby.
Seeing them piled up in a heap was almost comical.
The one mid-thrust, the one groping her chest...
Talk about a real clusterfuck.
I thought about shoving the guys aside and taking a turn, but the sight killed my libido cold.
Without hesitation, I swung my machete at the three bastards. Each time one died, a golden pouch got sucked into the survivor beside it.
Finally, the last coin pouch remained.
40,000? Foooorty thousand? Insane.
Sure, there were damn near twenty guys in total, but still—40k.
Adding the earlier 20k or so, this was a massive haul.
A strange sense of pride swelled up.
Haha... damn. Slaughter a bunch of people and feel proud? Sigh. Fuck me.
Even as those thoughts ran through my head, I stayed hidden as best I could.
Just in case.
For all I knew, some Da Vinci type could be lurking invisible, ready to bash my skull with a rusty nail-studded bat from behind.
This near-paranoid caution was what had kept me alive this long.
Cowardly and obsessive. Perfect words for a guy like me.
Bodies vanishing was a godsend.
If they stuck around, they'd leave traces everywhere—but like this, no one would ever know what went down here.
Really... what a great system.
If corpses lingered every kill, my personality would've driven me nuts just cleaning up.
I checked the mirror for anyone outside, saw it was clear, and slipped quietly into the hallway.
Time to head to the academic building and get home.
This adventure was plenty for one day.
Wandering an empty nighttime campus was terrifying.
As a kid, I'd feared ghosts or supernatural spooks jumping out. Now, it was people that scared me.
In a world where nothing was scarier than humans.
Hell, I'd welcome a ghost or specter at this point.
Supernatural beings would mean supernatural powers too.
Who knows? Maybe I'd get some superpowers?
Hold up... come to think of it, my Sleep skill is basically a superpower, isn't it...?
I'd been wielding supernatural power all along.
That made me think ghosts and spirits might actually exist.
If they did, I'd prefer a hot virgin ghost with a killer body.
Through the underground passage to the academic building, familiar paths finally appeared, making navigation easier.
Spotting the cafeteria on the first floor made my stomach rumble a bit.
Ah, their Western food was cheap and tasty. Doubt I'll ever eat there again.
As I moved quietly, a commotion from outside caught my ear. What the...?
Hiding in a dark corner like the dead, I peeked out. A group of guys was heading up toward the academic building from outside.
Chinese again?
Problem was, there were a lot. One, two, three... twelve.
What the hell? Where they headed? Oh... no way, the crew from the International Education Hall earlier?
Not sure, but they didn't seem connected. Felt like their own independent pack.
Hunched in hiding, pondering, a plausible theory hit me.
The Chinese guys back there had been waiting for something.
Kneeling men, the boss raping the woman, the lineup of underlings.
Were they waiting for these guys?
Fuck. What, are they the Triads? Shooting a noir flick in someone else's country.
Nah. Calling those punks noir would insult the genre. Just playground bullies.
Anyway... no traces left.
If there were witnesses, I'd have planned for it.
Couldn't handle twelve alone anyway.
Better to stay hidden and head home. Too much hassle.
This was already overkill for me. I'm no caped crusader.
The trek home was long and grueling.
Probably from overusing the Sleep Skill. Exhausted.
I'd raked in a ton of coins, so maybe chug another Recovery Potion? Nah, saved it.
Almost home now. Just wanna get there, shower, and crash.
Got careless near the end and nearly walked into danger.
The assholes I'd dubbed "scumbags."
Five guys and two women, waiting in the alley in front of my bunker mansion.
Fuck. What now? Did they track me here?
In this shit world, where'd they score smokes? They puffed away contentedly, spitting on the ground.
If they were waiting for me, they wouldn't be so out in the open.
Would've lured or ambushed. They're not after me. Hopefully.
Luckily, my worries proved unfounded.
The five guys approached the scumbags, greeting each other like old pals.
And surprisingly, one of the five I recognized.
Jeong Jong-chan. Se-hee's personal guard dog. Chemistry department classmate.
"Whew. Her Majesty ventured far from the queen's side, huh?"
The scumbag leader spoke, and Jong-chan grinned back.
"You get it?"
"Of course."
The leader nodded, and one scumbag handed Jong-chan an eco-bag.
"Whoa, fully eco-friendly? Handing it over in one of these."
"What, want it prettied up with wrapping paper next time?"
"Pass. Hey, check this."
The guy next to Jong-chan took the bag and inspected inside.
"Okay."
"Yeah? Take a look."
The guy pulled something out for Jong-chan to verify, who nodded.
Then another handed a suitcase they'd been dragging to the scumbag leader.
"Damn, gotta pay for the suitcase too?"
"Fuck off."
The scumbags tried opening the suitcase, saw the lock, and asked Jong-chan.
"Code?"
"3827."
It clicked open, and they oohed at the contents.
Ah... fuck. Can't see shit from here.
"Good?"
"All good, all good. Nice clean deal, no haggling. That's why I like you guys."
Jong-chan just smiled silently at the leader's words.
That smug prick... what a punchable grin for a company drone.
Fuck... no wonder Se-hee fucked him.
"We're off. Same contact method next time?"
"Naturally. But where you guys been lately? Haven't seen you around."
My ears perked at the leader's question.
Location... I could learn their spot like this?
"Why? Coming to visit?"
"Well... anything good if we do?"
"We won't kill you."
The scumbags' faces soured at Jong-chan's words.
Sensing it, the leader signaled his crew to chill and told Jong-chan.
"Too scary, can't make it."
"We'll be at the logistics center. Swing by if you're bored."
Everyone looked a bit deflated by Jong-chan's confidence.
"Fuck. You ended up there? You're ballsy. Alright, catch you later."
The leader waved his crew off. The scumbags grabbed the suitcase, eyeing Jong-chan's group warily as they vanished down the alley.
Jong-chan watched them go, then headed the other way.
"Hoo..."
I finally exhaled, scanned around thoroughly, and slipped quietly into the bunker.
