Prologue: Life is Inherently Unreasonable
Yohan. Life is inherently unreasonable, full of things that can never be understood.
Those were the last words my older sister—my only family—had spoken right before she died. I knew how painfully true they were, yet there were moments when I couldn’t help wondering if all that absurdity had somehow clumped together and aimed itself exclusively at me. This was one of those moments.
…I want to die.
I stared up at the dull gray ceiling and swallowed a sigh. Why the hell had the world decided to drop this particular trial on my head? If I traced it back, the whole mess probably started two weeks ago when the nation’s S-classhunters were abruptly wiped out. Or maybe the real problem was this entire world that had been getting invaded by subdimensional spaces called Gates in the first place.
Every misfortune had clicked together like interlocking gears, and the end result was me, sitting here in this exact spot.
“Seong Yohan, starting today you’ve been assigned to manage the prisoner corps made up of S-class hunters. This is a job only someone with your special ability to read and manipulate mana circuits can handle.”
“From now on you’ll receive classified information on every S-class hunter currently imprisoned in the country. Pick out the ones you think you can manage and report back.”
This absurd, incomprehensible position.
“There are only a few months left before the uncleared S-class Gate begins eroding the surrounding region… so please give it everything you have.”
I accepted the black folder. Its weight pressed heavily into my palm, as if it were already prophesying the future that awaited me.
Can I actually pull this off?
I don’t know. Fuck it. I’ll just have to make it work somehow.
I squeezed my eyes shut and wrenched open Pandora’s box with all the strength I could muster. And from inside, two crazy bitches sprang out.
