Chapter Title: The Greatest Tutorial (3)
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Teetering on the edge of capture without quite getting caught.
Rokan herded the goblins along with precise spacing and arrived at the village hall. The log-built village hall was the largest structure in the settlement, but being a makeshift pioneer village, it was inevitably crude.
“Use Flame Resistance Scroll.”
As the goblins closed in right behind him, Rokan activated the flame resistance scroll and dashed inside the village hall.
Whoosh!
The moment he entered, flames burst forth, and scorching heat flooded into his lungs. His breath caught in his throat, making it hard to breathe.
The village hall was already ablaze, so without the flame resistance magic, he would have suffered severe burns and suffocation.
Gulp.
To top off his fully depleted health, Rokan downed a lowest-grade health recovery potion as well. His life force, which had been on the verge of plummeting to zero from just one or two goblin attacks, began to slowly recover.
‘Come on, come on.’
The question was whether the goblins would actually follow him in.
Even with the fervor of battle upon them, would they leap into a fiery pit where just standing drained their health massively?
If this didn’t work, he’d have to scrap the plan and start over from scratch.
“Keee!”
Their screeches answered for them. They had leaped in after Rokan.
“Hah!”
The instant he heard that, Rokan got to work. He drew the woodcutter’s one-handed axe and swung with all his might at one of the burning support pillars holding up the village hall.
Crack, crack. Crumble.
Weakened by the flames, the wood gave way after just a few axe strikes. It helped that the axe had an option enhancing logging, true to its “woodcutter’s” name.
The flames spread to the axe as well, sharply reducing its durability, but that didn’t matter. It was equipment whose ownership lasted only through the tutorial anyway.
One, two, three.
As he hacked away, methodically targeting each support’s position, a searing pain like being burned flared in his side. It wasn’t the flame resistance scroll wearing off. One of the goblins that had rushed in had stabbed him with its hand-knife.
“Urk!”
Rokan halted his swings to bash the goblin away. He kicked it aside, took a swig from the lowest-grade health recovery potion, and poured the rest on the wound. Being the lowest grade, it didn’t fill his health in one go, but for now, any recovery was a godsend.
“Kiiik! Kiiik!”
Looking back, the building was already chaos. It was packed with goblins that had been forced inside by the armed goblin’s coercion.
The sight was almost comical. They’d been dragged in against their will, but now the heat had them dithering between attacking and fleeing.
The armed goblin that should have been issuing orders was already half-cooked from its metal gear, out of its mind. It suffered more than anyone as the metal heated up.
“It’s over!”
To those fools, Rokan delivered the final gift. He smashed the last pillar.
Rumble.
The village hall began to collapse completely.
“Squeal!”
Amid the screams from all directions as the debris crushed them, Rokan hurled himself toward the corner he’d eyed earlier. He aimed to hide in the gap between already-fallen rubble.
‘Guh!’
But it wasn’t easy. The collapse accelerated the moment he toppled the final pillar. A massive chunk of stone slammed into his back as he moved.
His health chunked away, and smaller debris dragged it to the brink. He chugged the last of his lowest-grade health recovery potion in a panic, but one or two more hits would spell game over for sure.
‘Please……!’
Rokan slid forward desperately. He jammed the axe haft into a gap in the quivering rubble already showing signs of chain collapse, using the woodcutter’s one-handed axe as a brace to carve out a hiding space.
Rumble!
The next instant, the entire village hall came crashing down.
[You have completed the tutorial.]
And moments later, what appeared before his eyes was not the black void of death, but the tutorial completion message.
Apparently, wiping out all the goblins in the village ended the tutorial automatically, even without leaving the area.
[Unbelievable feat! You defeated an opponent 10 levels stronger than yourself.]
[Acquired title ‘Descendant of David.’]
[You are the first to acquire this title.]
[Unbelievable feat! You defeated multiple opponents each 3 levels stronger than yourself.]
[Acquired title ‘Man of 17 vs 1.’]
[You are the first to acquire this title.]
[Impossible feat! You have perfectly cleared the tutorial.]
[Acquired title ‘Nothing is Impossible!’]
[You are the first to acquire this title.]
“That’s more like it!”
He’d snagged three titles in total. Two unbelievable feats and even an impossible one!
Rokan had earned a few “unbelievable” titles in his past life, but one marked “impossible” was a first even for him.
He itched to check their effects right away, but sadly, that would have to wait. He could only view them after the tutorial wrap-up finished and he arrived in the so-called “Pocket City.”
‘Tolkin got a “unique” grade title called Avenger, right?’
Which meant Rokan could probably score at least “epic” grade. As he buzzed with excitement, a small cluster of lights floated before his eyes.
[Tutorial participation rewards are being distributed.]
[Acquired Hard Barley Bread × 10.]
[Acquired 50 bronze.]
These were the standard rewards. The basics everyone got, no matter how they performed in the tutorial.
But if he’d skipped the tutorial like in his past life, he wouldn’t have gotten a single one. Seemingly trivial, yet in the notoriously user-unfriendly The Lord, tutorial rewards played a huge role.
‘Ugh, thinking about the hell I went through for these…….’
No wonder Rokan ground his teeth recalling his past life upon seeing them.
Pocket City would probably be crawling with players in the same boat as his old self.
[Additional rewards are being distributed based on your tutorial results.]
[Acquired Unknown Box × 5.]
‘Whoa, five boxes?’
Unknown boxes were exactly what they sounded like—boxes with unknown contents. They were the tutorial’s signature special rewards.
The ‘real’ prize for Rokan had been the titles, but these were still plenty useful early on, so more was always better.
‘There were even guys who made a business off these, I think.’
As random boxes with unpredictable contents, some profiteers spread rumors of “rare” grade or higher items to cash in.
Later, it came out that these flimsy wooden boxes only ever yielded normal-grade stuff.
‘Huh…… but why are these so sturdy?’
Rokan, lost in past-life memories, sensed something off. He’d gotten five unknown boxes, which was great, but they looked different from what he remembered.
No, he knew what they were, but they shouldn’t have appeared here.
‘Why are these showing up?’
Four sturdy iron boxes and one gleaming silver box. Was it because he’d cleared the tutorial? The lineup was astonishing.
‘Iron boxes go up to magic grade max, silver to rare. Jackpot.’
Of course, “max” was just the ceiling, and contents were random. But at this stage, any gear would be a massive upgrade.
“Heh heh heh heh!”
How could he not let out a silly laugh?
Even after arriving in Pocket City, Rokan kept chuckling, drawing stares from others.
But who cared? This was the era when newbies were first diving into this killer game, cheering like maniacs everywhere. And he’d never been one to mind others’ gazes anyway.
‘Alright, what to check first.’
While everyone else was running themselves ragged learning the system, leveling up, and grabbing quests, Rokan didn’t need to bother.
Instead, he sank into the happy dilemma of what to open first.
Unknown boxes or titles?
‘Titles first.’
They were what he was most curious about, after all.
[First][Descendant of David][Unique]
You defeated an opponent vastly stronger, 10 levels above you.
You are the first to acquire this title.
[Effects]
-All stats +10% when fighting enemies higher level than you.
[First][Man of 17 vs 1][Unique]
You emerged victorious from a 17 vs 1 battle. Numbers mean nothing to you.
You are the first to acquire this title.
[Effects]
-Defense +10% when fighting multiple enemies.
-Defense increases proportionally with number of enemies in combat, up to 30% max.
‘Whoa!’
Descendant of David and Man of 17 vs 1 were both “unique” grade titles. And with “first” attached, their effects were boosted.
The ones Rokan had gotten in his past life only offered top stat +10% and defense +10%, so this was astounding.
Both were titles that shone later rather than now. Percentage effects tended to work that way.
‘Both are late-game powerhouses.’
Descendant of David might underperform early compared to flat stat titles—10% of low stats was peanuts—but later it’d balloon massively. Man of 17 vs 1 would truly flex in guild wars or large-scale PvP.
In his past life, virtually every top-tier player had these. Guilds even ran ops early on to secure them for prospects.
‘These’ll shave off a ton of time…….’
Interestingly, both were hardest to snag early; give up then, and they got even tougher later.
By the time you chased them with top gear and titles, enemies had scaled up too.
In The Lord, where monsters were brutally tough, fighting higher-level mobs en masse was nightmare fuel without a specialized class. So you gritted through it at low levels.
Snagging them now, at unique grade no less, was borderline miraculous for Rokan.
‘Alright, now…….’
Satisfying so far, but one remained.
The title from an “impossible” feat!
He checked it with bated breath.
“……It’s totally broken.”
Those were Rokan’s first words the moment he saw it.
