What Is a Virtual Streamer?
What exactly is a virtual streamer?
Even back in 2025, before I regressed, the comparisons between virtual streamers and female cam streamers never stopped.
Aren't virtual streamers just ugly people hiding their faces on stream? If they were actually pretty, they'd just do cam work.
That was one of the most common takes.
Honestly, I kind of agreed.
Looking at the red pills that occasionally leaked by accident, and considering how much of an advantage a pretty face really was — there was no good reason to hide it.
But streaming isn't all about looks.
If that were true, every major streamer on the platform would be a cam girl or cam guy.
Look at reality, though.
Among the big-name streamers, was there even one with genuinely outstanding looks?
Ah — not that I'm dunking on their appearances.
I'm just being objective here. Strictly objective.
Wit sharper than anyone else's. The creative vision to cook up entertaining content. The control to whip a chat into a frenzy. They had streaming talent that shone far brighter than any face.
Virtual streamers had that too.
There were the ones whose voices alone were so exceptional they got called "mercury" just for existing. Plenty of virtual streamers could sing. Starting from a naturally good voice already put them ahead, so of course they got rated higher…
But that was as far as it went.
Dig around and you'd find cam girls with great voices too, and when it came to dancing — forget singing — the fight was completely one-sided.
And that wasn't all.
Pangea TV's major tournaments all assumed offline participation. Star League, Myeolmangjeon, and so on. The big content events were the same.
But virtual streamers got shut out of the mainstream because revealing a red pill was too difficult.
In an ecosystem this stacked against them, what advantage could a virtual streamer possibly have?
The me of this era, before the regression, would have had no idea. But Seo Min-ah, who came back from 2025, knew exactly.
The power of technology.
As tech advanced, virtual streaming held infinite potential. Building dazzling concert venues no human streamer could ever pull off. Breaking free of physical space to swim through game worlds.
…Shit. Thinking about it, that's all just money-flexing, isn't it.
Right. If you threw enough cash at the tech, nothing was impossible for a virtual streamer.
And the reason I'm saying all this right now is…
"The Zero Two rate comes out to five hundred Candies, sir."
"Hold on, can you cut me a deal? That's really expensive."
"Ahem! This gentleman doesn't know the market rates. Let me ask you straight — how well do you know VRChat?"
"…I'm kind of a beginner."
"Ugh. That's why you don't know how the world works. Go ask someone to do Zero Two for a hundred Candies and you'll get slapped, my guy."
"…"
I'll cover it for him — our Ssa-yo has diabetes and a herniated disc, he's a pitiful hyung. Please take good care of him
"Oppa. Why are you still standing there making your legs hurt? This seat has a great view, you know? Sit down and get comfortable."
"Uh… okay. So the sit key is…"
"Try pressing C? Yeah. Go over there and press it."
I sat Ssa-yo's avatar down a little ways off from the circular stage.
I'd checked the framing while working with the staff and the camera — that spot captured the best on screen. Good composition, too.
Hm? Who's the staff?
A VRChat veteran I'd hired. He was also a creator who did all kinds of work in VRChat. I'd contracted him in advance to prepare for this audition, and we'd be working together for two months.
Ha. Which meant I was genuinely broke now. The kind of broke where I had to worry about rent and living expenses.
Still, he was skilled enough that he was giving a near-beginner like me a ton of help.
Even the map we were on right now was one he'd built himself.
Yeah. Honestly, Saedalcom's first mistake was the map.
A virtual streamer's greatest strength was freedom from the constraints of physical space. The boundless world of VRChat. If you wanted to push the audience's immersion even a little higher, you should never have picked a map with a big lake under a blue sky as your backdrop.
"I'll start now."
"…"
For all the back-and-forth, the peak of today's stream was always going to be the Zero Two dance. This whole situation existed because of my slip of the tongue, after all.
Feels awkward. But… I should do it, right?
The world I saw through the VR headset was still unfamiliar. The weight of the sticks in both hands and the trackers strapped to my waist and legs felt just as strange.
Even so, every day after ending stream I'd log into VRChat to practice, taking feedback from the veteran staffer and putting in the work.
Money really was great. If I'd tried to get comfortable on my own, it might have taken over a month.
I clenched the sticks hard, then released them, giving the signal to shake off the nerves.
The staffer, hidden in a dark corner of the map, worked the equipment — and a familiar song began to play.
Time to prove myself.
The greatest appeal of internet broadcasting is that it happens live.
That raw, unfiltered freshness no recorded format can ever match.
The problem, though, is that variables pile up — and the mood or situation can sweep everything off in a direction completely different from what you intended.
That was exactly where Ssa-yo found himself right now.
The original plan hadn't looked like this.
Visit the virtual streamers he'd contacted beforehand via notes, one by one in a tour format, building stream moments through banter. Then, at the right time, log into VRChat as a group and show Pangea TV's audience a kind of virtual charm they'd never seen before.
But the plan skidded out from the very first turn.
He'd tried to showcase each virtual streamer's individual appeal through banter and lock in stream moments, but almost none of them could keep up. The talk with Choi Eun-bin had some flavor, but the rest fell short of expectations — and watching the chat slowly sink, he'd been forced to early-deploy Saedalcom, the one he'd considered his ace.
Huh? And then what was this.
The axe he'd trusted had chopped his own foot.
Saedalcom, who'd looked like a fairly polished streamer when Ssa-yo watched her logged out, had frozen solid the moment the banter actually started.
Ten years of streaming experience, and Ssa-yo clocked it immediately.
Ah. She's a shaker.
There were types who ran their solo streams just fine but locked up the second a collab started — and Saedalcom was textbook.
Even the Zero Two dance he'd tried on a whim was hard to call a success. A 3D avatar dancing instead of a cam girl was a fresh, novel image for sure — but some viewers felt put off by exactly that, and more importantly, there was a clear flaw.
She's just not skilled enough. Can't be helped. Dancing was never her main content to begin with.
Cam girls danced as a reaction to Candy donations every single day, and Pangea TV's audience was used to that level of skill. Anything short of solid got a polite nod and a pass.
Cam girls who knew their dancing wasn't up to par would throw on something more revealing or lean into sexy appeal to hold attention — but that wasn't an easy option for Saedalcom. There were already viewers mixed in who felt resistant to virtual streamers; adding exposure on top of that would backfire for sure.
Is today's content… dead?
Ssa-yo's energy started freefalling, and the chat was about to turn weird right along with it — when the cuckoos started flying in.
Seo-a's sudden entry into the fight.
Watching the chat heat up, Ssa-yo realized this was the only chance to put a respirator on a dying piece of content.
After that, everything moved in one clean stroke.
Banter with Seo-a to pull the audience in, log into VRChat, move to the invited map.
And now he was staring past the monitor with trembling eyes.
At Seo-a standing on the circular stage.
"…"
Lush black hair, and red eyes.
He'd been too focused on the content to notice until now, but something about Seo-a's avatar was different. Unlike Saedalcom, who had a slightly broader feel, hers was slender — and the shape and placement of the eyes were far cleaner.
I'd thought Seo-a's avatar was pretty before, but seeing her back-to-back with Saedalcom… the gap is huge.
In that moment, the music started.
At the same time, every light on the map went out, and darkness filled the screen.
"Huh?"
The confusion lasted only a second.
With a sharp pop, a single shaft of light dropped from the front of the ceiling above the stage.
A dazzling spotlight glittering like club lighting.
The production was anything but ordinary — he couldn't look away.
She started swaying with the rhythm, and somehow his own shoulders wanted to bounce along.
For real? Is this actually real?
Ssa-yo knew.
The Zero Two dance was nowhere near as easy as it looked. Most of the videos uploaded to YouTube cut off the lower body and moved only the upper half — cheap knockoffs that just swayed the hips left and right.
A proper Zero Two dance required the upper and lower body to move in opposite directions, drawing a parabolic arc on the beat. And that wasn't even the end of it — from the front, you had to see the hip joints of the thighs crossing up and down. Without serious skill, you couldn't make it look right.
Hm? Why did he know this in such detail?
Don't ask. Last year's year-end awards show, he'd picked it as a candidate for the celebration stage, then dropped it after ten days because the difficulty was too high and switched to a different dance. The choreographer had been so fired up about teaching the real Zero Two, not some knockoff.
And yet, astonishingly, the dance unfolding right in front of him matched what that teacher had demonstrated — sixty percent… no, nearly seventy percent.
Compared to Saedalcom, the difference was even more stark. Unlike Saedalcom, who'd moved almost entirely from the upper body, the lower-body motion was big — and above all, the way the hips pushed forward made the movement feel three-dimensional.
And that bust morphing, swelling out and flaunting its presence… ahem!
Viewer reactions poured in in real time.
Without realizing it, Ssa-yo ran his hands along both of his arms.
Maybe because he'd never imagined a stage like this could be shown — goosebumps had risen on his skin.
This is insane. This is actually just…
In that instant, the dream he'd been sketching for a full year began to shimmer at the edges of his mind.
Pangea TV's first-ever virtual idol audition.
Ssa-yo's eyes were filled, end to end, with the image of Seo-a.
