I Smashed My Cheating Girlfriend's Head
Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.
Why did that line suddenly pop into my head when I hadn't even read the book? Probably because of the voices drifting to my ears right now.
"Mmm, baby, hurry up~ My boyfriend's gonna be here in two hours."
"Just a little longer like this. It feels so good right now."
Voices dripping with honey. Anyone listening would think they were a loving couple. But the problem was, this conversation was coming from my girlfriend's one-room apartment.
"…Ha."
My original plans had fallen through, so I'd come straight to her place. Right in front of the building I'd spotted her holding hands with some guy. I'd followed them up and eavesdropped, and this was the result.
My heart hammered like crazy. My breathing sped up until every inhale felt like drowning. My stomach churned; I was one second from puking.
Crunch—
A splitting headache hit me and cold sweat poured down my face. I felt ready to collapse on the spot, but I bit down hard on my lip and held on.
Where the hell had it all gone wrong? I couldn't claim to be the perfect boyfriend, but I was pretty sure I hadn't been a bad one either.
I'd shown affection every time we met. I'd never missed an anniversary. I'd paid for every single meal. I'd even taken on an extra part-time job just to cover it.
I'd felt guilty for not doing more, so I'd tried even harder. And the reward for all that was getting cheated on.
What the fuck am I supposed to do with this…
I sank down onto the hallway floor. Right then I wanted nothing more than to punch in the door-lock code, storm inside, and cave both their skulls in.
It would feel good for a second. Then I'd go to prison and my life would be over.
Were those two pieces of shit even worth it? Those cockroach-level trash? At least I didn't think so.
"Ahhng…"
A faint moan leaked through the door. I braced myself against the wall and stood up.
In the end, the best revenge I could manage was blasting the whole cheating story all over Everytime, the university community board. If she had any shame left she'd drop out and disappear. If she was shameless she'd just keep showing her face on campus.
How should I word the post…
I forced down the miserable feeling that this was all I could do and started walking away. That was when it happened.
"AAAAAARGH!!!"
A man's scream tore through the hallway.
I whipped around, startled. Maybe I'd misheard—but the second scream came right after, and I scrambled to punch in the door-lock code.
Beep-beep-beep-beep— ding-a-ling~
The cheerful little chime somehow felt wrong as I yanked the handle hard. The door swung open and a thick, metallic stench punched me in the nose. I grimaced.
Crunch-crunch—
It didn't take long to realize the smell was blood.
"—Gguuuuuaaaargh!"
The wet sound of something being chewed mixed with the man's raw screams, crystal clear.
I couldn't tell if the scene in front of me was real or some nightmare. Because my ex-girlfriend was straddling the guy with glowing red eyes, tearing into his neck.
"Kkeuuuuk…"
The man coughed up blood, eyes rolled back, body convulsing like he was having a seizure.
I'd never been able to watch anything gory, yet right now I couldn't look away.
Gulp.
My heart was pounding again—for a completely different reason this time.
Crunch-crunch—
Those lips that had whispered love just minutes ago. That tongue that had mixed sweet saliva with mine. Those teeth that used to nibble my skin as a joke.
Now they were weapons, greedily ripping flesh and sucking blood.
"Hoo… hoo…"
I had no idea what the hell was going on. Anyone else who saw this would have slammed the door and run without a second thought.
Instead I stepped slowly into the room. For some reason my hand closed around the hammer sitting on top of the shoe cabinet. I gripped the handle tight, then swung it with everything I had at the bitch's head while she was still greedily devouring flesh.
CRACK!
Bone shattered. A heavy jolt ran up my wrist. Her body crumpled, face planting straight into the neck she'd been eating.
"Kyaaaargh!"
Even after a hit like that she twitched and tried to get up. Something told me I couldn't let her, so I brought the hammer down again and again—hard, like I was trying to drive her head through the wall.
CRACK!
The hammer sank deeper into her skull. When I felt something soft and mushy under the head of the tool, I finally let go.
"Hah… hah…"
I dropped straight onto the floor.
A rush of euphoria hit me, and power flooded every corner of my body. I'd never felt anything like it in my life.
"Kyaaaaah!"
"C-call the police!!!"
Only then did the noise from outside register. I pushed myself up with one hand on the floor and turned. Through the wide-open front door I saw people staring.
"Sh-shit!"
The moment our eyes met they scattered in every direction. A heavy thud from down the hall told me they'd locked themselves in their rooms.
I looked back at the two corpses on the bed.
A man and a woman, dead side by side. Considering how desperate they'd been for each other a minute ago, they probably both died happy.
I dug a cigarette out of my pocket, stuck it between my lips, lit it, and took a deep drag. The nicotine hit my brain and the first thought that came was:
"Fuck. I'm screwed."
It hadn't been pure rage. I'd been a little worked up, sure, but I'd decided it was okay to kill her.
Because the thing I'd seen wasn't human. Not because she was a cheating piece of trash who barely counted as human—because she literally wasn't one.
She really wasn't a person.
Cannibals exist, sure, but what kind of human eats another human raw? And the look in my ex's eyes had been nothing a person should have.
"…Closer to a zombie, honestly."
Of course, explaining any of that wouldn't change a thing. The cops would show up any second and arrest me.
I'd be plastered all over the news as the psycho who mercilessly smashed his cheating girlfriend's head in. The communities would go wild for a while. Feminists would probably stage a protest at some station.
That part's a little annoying, yeah.
If someone asked me right now whether I regretted it, I'd shake my head without hesitation.
No regrets.
For some reason I felt fantastic. Like I'd finally smashed the mask I'd been forcing myself to wear all this time.
I should've done this way sooner. Not necessarily crushing someone's skull, but living however the fuck I wanted.
Yeah. If I had any regret, that was it. Not living on my own terms. Caring too much about what other people thought. How much had that cost me over the years?
What a waste. Such a waste.
I almost wished the world would just end. Then I wouldn't have to go to prison. Of course that was pure fantasy. I'd pay for what I did. I wasn't even planning to run.
Wee-woo, wee-woo.
Sirens wailed outside. The cops had arrived after the call.
I took another deep drag, stood up, and walked over to the full-length mirror in the corner of the room.
"Hmm."
Blood caked all over me. I looked every bit the murderer. I went to the kitchen and turned on the faucet.
Splash-splash.
I washed the blood off my face, then wet a dishcloth and wiped the worst of it from my neck and clothes.
Back in front of the mirror I looked almost presentable. A minute ago I'd been a full-on psychopath killer; now I was more like a tidy, well-groomed murderer.
A snort of laughter escaped me.
Cracking jokes and laughing at myself in a situation like this? Yeah, something in my head was definitely broken.
More importantly, why the hell aren't they coming up?
I'd waited patiently, but the cops still hadn't appeared. Feeling something was off, I walked to the window. The street below came into view.
"Huh?"
Blood everywhere. People were biting other people—not one or two, but dozens all at once, all over the place.
"Kyaaaaah!"
The screams I'd been hearing this whole time—I'd assumed they were about me and tuned them out. Apparently not.
My hand trembled as I clutched my chest. Through my palm I felt my heart slamming like it wanted to explode.
Is this for real?
The tiny possibility unfolding right in front of me sent pure, insane excitement flooding through me.
"Kraaargh…"
I was trying to calm myself down when a low growl came from beside me. I turned. The guy my girlfriend had been chewing on was thrashing around.
I flicked the finished cigarette onto the floor and walked over to the bed. The hammer handle stuck out of the back of her skull like Excalibur waiting to be drawn.
So did that make me King Arthur?
The hero who smashed his girlfriend's head. Kind of a cool title, if I said so myself. I yanked the hammer free. The sticky, wet resistance wasn't exactly pleasant.
"Kaaaargh!"
The man snapped his bloodshot eyes open and clacked his teeth. I looked down at him and raised the hammer high.
I had no idea what expression I was wearing, but if I had to guess… I was probably grinning from ear to ear.
CRACK!
