Is There Any Benefit to Getting Close to the Team Leader?
She wanted to get close to me.
A woman overflowing with sex appeal. The kind who could bewitch any man. And yet a married woman — which only made her more alluring. That woman had just declared that she needed to get close to me.
But I couldn't detect any personal feelings in it.
On the first day, over lunch, I'd drawn a clear line myself — so Yun Seongyeon seemed to trust me a little. And that trust was now growing into a "relationship" between us.
"What exactly do you mean by getting close…?"
"I don't know how you see me, Jichan. Could I hear that part first?"
"How I see you… well, I think of you as our team's Team Leader."
Start safe. Keep it ordinary.
"And if you were to attach an adjective to that word — Team Leader?"
"Hmm…"
Setting aside how I actually felt about Yun Seongyeon, if I had to describe her based solely on what I'd seen in a single day…
"…A charismatic Team Leader."
"Charisma…"
"I'm not sure if you're aware of it, but you seem to have a firm grip on the atmosphere."
"Is that how it looked to you?"
"Yes. When you first appeared — and again when we went to the Finance Department. The moment you showed up, everyone shut their mouths. Of course, that can happen on a first appearance. But that state held, didn't it?"
"Isn't that just because it was my first day?"
"That's a different concept entirely. You arrived yesterday, and the team was quiet all through this morning as well. Nobody dared do anything but work."
The sex appeal Yun Seongyeon carried had turned into something venomous, and people were deliberately withholding their attention just to keep from being drawn into it.
From her perspective… well, that could be either a strength or a weakness.
The strength, of course, was the charisma I'd just mentioned. There was a natural distance that came from not being close to someone in a fairly high position like Team Leader. Because that distance existed precisely from a lack of familiarity, it forced the subordinates to treat her with deference. Conversely, for Yun Seongyeon, it gave her a kind of authority when she issued instructions.
But the downside of that same distance…
"That said, I wouldn't call it an entirely good thing. Because of the atmosphere that forms whether you want it or not, it's hard for the team members to bond. Or even if they do bond, they'll bond with everyone except you."
"Hmm…"
In a company where people gathered to work, excessive closeness tended to become poison — but being too distant created its own brand of discomfort. The sweet spot sat right in the middle. The previous Team Leader, whatever else you could say about him, had been easygoing enough that that part hadn't been bad.
Did Yun Seongyeon want to create the same kind of atmosphere as her predecessor?
"Why are you asking about that?"
"Ah, well…"
She looked embarrassed to say it. She scratched her cheek with a sheepish smile — and of course she did it with her left hand, the one wearing the wedding ring… which sent my thoughts somewhere else entirely.
I shoved those thoughts aside at once.
"Hmm… I know this is a delicate thing to say, but I want your help going forward with life at the company."
"My help?"
Yesterday, after lunch, she'd asked me to tell her without holding back if she showed any shortcomings. I'd heard that much. But the fact that she was bringing this up again now suggested she meant a different kind of help.
"When I was walking around yesterday morning, I realized you weren't just deeply involved with our team and department — you had your hands in other departments as well."
"I do… have a fairly wide network."
"Yes. So once I understood you were an important person on our team, I made sure to have lunch with you first. But all afternoon, rather than working, I was observing the team's atmosphere."
"And?"
"I saw that you weren't just important — you essentially have the team under your control."
Well. Even someone who wasn't steeped in office life could figure that out with a bit of observational sense.
"In your opinion, is the rank of Team Leader a high one?"
"It is."
Rank structures varied a little from company to company, but at ours, Team Leader sat effectively just below Department Manager. Employee, Assistant Manager, Manager, Deputy Manager, Team Leader, Department Manager, then the director-level positions.
Yun Seongyeon occupied one of those high ranks.
"Then why were the team members watching your face instead of mine?"
"That's…"
Because the moment I got fed up with this shit and walked out, they'd be the ones screwed.
But saying that literally felt a bit much.
"…Maybe because I provide that much help? As you said yourself yesterday, I serve as the central axis of the team."
"Exactly. And that's why I want to get close to someone like you."
…Ah.
She was just coming right out and saying she wanted to play office politics. Proposing a deal.
Then I'd take it seriously too.
"…Is there any benefit to getting close to the Team Leader?"
"There is."
I needed to confirm what I could extract from Yun Seongyeon. Here, we continued the conversation not as a man and a woman, but as a Team Leader and an Assistant Manager.
"After what happened to the previous Manager… aren't you carrying quite a heavy load?"
"…Honestly, yes."
A slight show of weakness here. I was used to it now, but in the beginning it had been genuinely brutal.
"Right. Someone who works that hard for the company — shouldn't they be promoted quickly?"
"……"
That hardship had been an experience for me. And Yun Seongyeon was subtly implying that the experience had been more than enough.
No — she was saying something else entirely. I controlled the team. If she controlled me, she would speak well of me to the Department Manager and HR. It was as good as saying that out loud.
"I'm fine, thank you."
"…Why?"
I refused.
To Chu Yeonju, I was her adorable little brother. To An Jihye, I was the most despicable piece of trash in the world. To Seon Yeonwoo, I was the oppa she could have whenever she wanted. After talking with Yun Seongyeon yesterday, I'd already sketched out a certain picture of our "relationship" the same way I had with those women.
The moment I accepted this deal, that picture would warp. And I didn't want that.
"I'm a little… disappointed."
"About what?"
"I told you yesterday. That I'd trust you and follow you. After saying something like that, hearing what you just said… it makes me feel like I haven't earned your trust."
"……"
"You don't need to go that far. As Team Leader, I can trust and follow you as you are."
Instead, I proposed that we pursue a clean relationship.
"So please, Team Leader — trust me and lean on me as well."
Lean on me.
The resonance of those words must have hit her hard, because Yun Seongyeon offered me a pure, innocent smile and held out her hand.
The woman who had been dripping with sex appeal. Brimming with venom. Looking dangerous because of it. This pure side of Yun Seongyeon was something I was seeing for the first time in reality, and I was a little flustered as I took her hand.
…That gap moe is insane.
"Shall we head back?"
"Yes."
And once we were back in the office, I checked — if she was willing to show me this much of a gap, our "relationship" must have improved somewhat…
Administrator:Choi Jichan
Management Targets:Seon Yeonwoo!, Park Humin!, Yun Seongyeon
Special Management Targets:Park Eunseo!, Chu Yeonju!, An Jihye!
"Hmm… not yet."
Still, unlike with the other women, I didn't feel particularly impatient about Yun Seongyeon. That was probably the leisure that came from her being a married woman.
With the others, there had always been an anxiety that if I didn't quickly lock them in as Special Management Targets, some man outside the company might snatch them away. But Yun Seongyeon had already been claimed by another man long ago — and that, paradoxically, gave me the feeling of a rest stop where I could relax.
Thanks to that, I didn't need to throw a fit or make a scene trying to do something with her right away. I could take my time building this "relationship" with Yun Seongyeon at a leisurely pace.
Two days later, on Thursday.
I came into work as always and was diligently grinding through my tasks, no different from usual. Then, around eleven—
"Assistant Manager Choi Jichan."
"Yes, Team Leader."
Yun Seongyeon called for me, so I stood and walked over.
"I'd like you to pick these up. Can you go now?"
What she held out was a single sheet of paper. Looking at the items listed, it was a sample list of materials a client was producing for us. The location was… Guro.
An off-site errand.
Before answering, I flicked my eyes around just long enough to gauge the other employees who could drive. Not fishing for their reactions — just checking. Nothing beat an off-site run for easy work, so the ones who could drive were quietly hoping to go themselves.
"Yes. I'll head out."
Yeah, fuck off — I'm going.
I nodded without hesitation, and Yun Seongyeon gave me a sly smile. It seemed she'd taken my request to lean on me the other day well, and was trying to toss me a little bonus.
Of course—
"Um, Team Leader."
"Yes?"
"Assistant Manager Choi is currently handling the AQ Industries contact…"
The Deputy Manager casually tried to keep me in my seat and imply that he should go instead.
However—
"Please handle AQ yourself, Deputy Manager. Assistant Manager Choi is the one doing the actual work on this, so it would be better for him to review the samples in person."
"Ah… yes."
Radiating pure charisma, Yun Seongyeon sat the Deputy Manager right back down. And then—
"Go ahead."
She shot me a look that said, Didn't I do well?
Appreciate it.
"Yes. I'll be back."
I put real sincerity into the farewell and started to step away from her desk…
"Ah, Team Leader."
"Yes?"
…but before I left, I decided to float one more suggestion that had just occurred to me.
"This is also something Assistant Manager Chu Yeonju from Team 2 knows well. Would it be possible to request support from Team 2?"
"Hmm… all right. I'll speak to Team 2's leader. Head over to Team 2 right away."
"Yes, thank you."
It's been a while — I should play with Chu Yeonju a bit too.
"Ah, Assistant Manager Choi."
"Yes?"
"It's almost lunchtime. Use this to grab a meal while you're out, and fill up the car too."
Oh, another freebie.
"Yes, ma'am. I'll be back."
"Go on."
It seemed the conversation was truly finished this time, so I said goodbye again, left the office, and waited just outside the entrance of the office next door.
About a minute later, I stepped into Team 2's office to find Chu Yeonju packing a few simple things. Then our eyes met.
"Ah, Jichan."
Ah… healing.
With a smile that genuinely seemed to mend the heart just by looking at it, Chu Yeonju trotted over to me with quick little steps.
"Shall we, sunbaenim?"
"Yes! Let's go right away."
Everyone already knew Chu Yeonju and I were close. The male employees of Team 2, watching her beam at me, didn't look jealous so much as… they just grinned like idiots at her face.
Well. With a face like Chu Yeonju's — and seeing her smile that brightly — any man would end up like that.
But did these people know?
"Sunbaenim, I think we should grab a meal first before we go."
"Hmm, shall we?"
The meaning behind the smile Chu Yeonju showed them and the meaning behind the smile she gave me were completely different.
Smack!
"Nnh!"
And—
"…I told you not to do that at the office."
—that later, I was planning to do it with Chu Yeonju for the first time in a while.
