Just the Two of Us
After confirming the green light that day, I called Seo-yeon unnie while I ate dinner. The menu was pasta ordered for delivery—specifically aglio e olio. I usually ordered pasta or tteokbokki. The reason was that they were clean to eat and didn't come with any side dishes. In short, it was purely because I was lazy. As a homebody, laziness was my biggest enemy.
"Unnie. I think it's right."
"What do you mean it's right all of a sudden?"
"You know... that thing."
"That thing...?"
Aish. Unnie. If I'd said this much, you should have caught on by now. We just talked recently. How can someone with such sharp senses on stream be like this in real life?
"The green light you mentioned, unnie. I think that's what it was."
"...Oh. For real? Wait, did you actually do what I told you to?"
What? What does that mean? Did she trick me? Like when they say you have to take your shoes off on an airplane?
"Yeah. You told me to, unnie. So I tried making eye contact and smiling."
"Oh my, look at you. So you really did want to date someone? And? What happened?"
I tended to have a lot of fantasies. And since I'd never dated anyone, it would be a lie to say I had no longing for a campus romance. Back in high school, my friends and I would huddle in the back of the classroom talking about how we'd all start dating once we got to college.
"But you were totally right, unnie. He glanced away from my eyes, you know?"
"Hehe. I told you, Yuna. Just listen to unnie and you'll get everything you want, even in your sleep."
"His ears turned a little red and he got all flustered. I was so surprised because it was exactly like what you said."
I finished speaking with the phone on speaker mode, then slurped up a mouthful of pasta. ...Mm. Delicious. Pasta didn't get old as fast as I expected. Maybe because I loved noodles.
"At that point it sounds like it's already over? Congratulations, Yuna. You've crossed over from the world of singles into the world of adults."
"Does that mean singles are kids?"
She always knew exactly where to poke to make me flare up. She deserved to get scolded by all twenty million single people across the country so she could never say something like that again.
"Of course they're kids. Dating is all part of life's experiences, Yuna."
Unnie tried to laugh it off with a casual joke. Normally I would have shot back with a couple more jabs, but I let it slide this time. After all, I was the one asking her for advice.
"So, unnie. What do I do now?"
I wasn't completely certain. I was just going along with it because her words had matched the situation. It made more sense to trust unnie, who had some dating experience, than to trust myself with zero experience. It was true that the way Oppa looked at me and the way he treated me felt far from ordinary. I wasn't sure what exactly had appealed to him, but I'd heard that men could fall for someone at first sight. Anyway, if she was saying it was definitely interest, then what was I supposed to do about it?
"That depends on what you want to do. What do you think of that guy?"
What I wanted to do... Hmm... I wasn't sure.
"...He's not bad. His face is cute, his personality seems nice, and our hobbies match up pretty well."
Woohyuk oppa didn't have the typical handsome, manly face. His features were delicate and he wasn't that tall. If anything, he was closer to the cute guy type. His personality wasn't exactly cute, though. Still, my taste in looks did lean toward the cute side. I remembered saying on stream that I preferred cute over cool and muscular. But if she asked whether I liked him... I still wasn't sure. And honestly, wasn't it too soon to like someone after such a short time? I'd never liked anyone before, so I really didn't know.
"I don't dislike him... but it still feels unclear?"
"That's obvious. You said you haven't known each other long. In that case, it might be good to take your time getting to know each other?"
"...You think so?"
"Women tend to be drawn to men who like them. If you meet a few more times, you'll understand what unnie means. Ah~ those are the good days~."
...How exactly do you take your time getting to know someone? If I knew that, I wouldn't be single. Unnie, am I supposed to go up to oppa and say, "Let's take our time getting to know each other"? No matter how I thought about it, that couldn't be right.
"If I want to talk to him first, what should I say?"
"Hmm... Invite him for a meal or take him to a café. Somewhere the two of you can talk comfortably. Not somewhere too closed off, though."
A café and a meal... but we already did that...?
"Unnie. We've already done all that."
"You already did?"
Unnie answered in a slightly dumbfounded tone.
"...Yeah."
"You didn't already kiss and then come to me for advice, did you?"
"Ahh~ Unnie! Stop teasing!"
At my unnie's mischievous advice, this dating novice could only clutch her head in frustration.
"It's feast time~!"
A bizarre Kog'Maw voice flowed out of my phone speaker. Well, I'd pretty much expected this. From the moment the first-pick support locked in Lulu, it was basically decided what Uni would do.
Uni mainly played Legends of League even though she did other games too. Probably because it had the most players, so it also had the most viewers. And it was a game she was really good at. Just the title of female Master ADC made a lot of viewers drool. It was that rare of a case.
The enemy comp had no escape tools, making it difficult for Kog'Maw to survive. It was a mix of assassins, lots of CC, and tanks. But Uni wasn't the type to hesitate over something as minor as team composition.
"But why play it, you ask? Because there's romance in it. If you're not going to chase the romance, why even play this game?"
"You'd rather play scaredy-cat champions like Xayah or Ezreal just to survive? That person is already disqualified. Bang bang bang. Please leave my room."
At her refreshing statement, the chat showed a rare burst of positive reactions.
Uni was an ADC who truly loved Kog-Lulu. You could call her a fanatic on the level of an MBTI zealot. The moment she saw Lulu, she brought out her drooling dog.
The question that came up in chat was followed by Uni's ridiculous answer.
"My favorite support? Hmm... I prefer buff-type supports. I like champions like Lulu or Janna."
"They make me stand out. They're supports who faithfully stay in their support role as supporters."
On stream, Uni had such a huge exhibitionist side. Thinking about it, she was basically a total basement warrior. The Yuna I'd met in real life didn't give off that vibe at all.
There it was. Uni's signature verbal roasting. She was pretty good at dishing it out. And since she was an ADC, her targets were mostly supports.
"No... The ones who initiate first are just too aggressive. And damage-dealing supports, ugh, don't even get me started."
The viewers already knew. This was the type of support Uni hated.
In a truly disgusted voice, Uni continued her rant.
"Look at all the damage support mains getting heated. Ew. Absolutely repulsive."
Watching the chat bicker back and forth with Uni, the game had already started without me noticing.
"Ah. It started. Kog'Maw into Kalista isn't actually that hard, you know? I'll show you how it's done."
"See, how do you play against her? You just have to not die in lane against Kalista. If Kog'Maw scales even decently, he just wins, right? Easy, yeah?"
That was like saying if you just study from the textbook you'll get into Seoul National University. Uni was stating the obvious as if it were profound. I let out a chuckle at how ridiculous it was.
Slain by the enemy.
Double Kill!
But the game progressed in a way that was completely different from Uni's commentary. The enemy Lee Sin's insane tunnel ganks and constant bottom lane camping kept killing Uni. Since Kog'Maw had no escape tools, it was hard to survive once ganked.
The chat caught fire again at the continuous deaths. But Uni paid it no mind.
"No. Everyone, it's because I got dove too much. It's not my fault, right? Agreed?"
"Alright, focus. I'll show you how to play out a game with a ruined Kog'Maw from here on."
And right on cue, a donation came in at the perfect moment.
Anonymous donated 1,000 won
If you win this game, 50,000 won
The moment the mission came in, Uni's voice brightened dramatically.
"Oh, fifty thousand won if I win? Understood. I'll play with real sincerity."
And just as ominous premonitions always came true, there was a set ending whenever she said the word "sincerity." A short while later, Uni's team's blue nexus exploded without mercy.
Defeat
When Uni lost, smiles bloomed across the viewers' faces. Including mine, of course.
Everyone was united in congratulating Uni on her defeat.
"Everyone. Do you really like it that much when I lose?"
Of course. That's what we watch the stream for.
"Alright, alright. I admit it. I played badly this game. But the jungler was really something else, right? That's fair, yeah?"
That was true. Even I would have shouted about the jungle diff.
"Ah. Hold on, everyone. I have a call coming in."
The sound cut out for a moment. At the same time, a notification popped up on my phone as I watched the stream.
Operations Management Team Chat. Minseok... why even you? The meeting had been set up to pick a topic before class since we still hadn't finalized it. That villainous woman wasn't even in the group chat, so of course she wouldn't participate. Wait a second... that meant tomorrow it would just be me and Yuna. And right on cue, a message arrived from Yuna.
To be honest, I wasn't exactly happy about it, but the thought of being alone with Yuna didn't feel bad either. Maybe this was what it meant to dislike it yet not dislike it at the same time. That was the thought that crossed my mind.
