Beneath the Pouring Stars
After the hot and dizzying afternoon at the infinity pool bordering the emerald sea, the South Pacific sky begins its fantastical magic, shifting colors moment by moment. The transparently piercing blue fades gradually into gold, morphing into a vast watercolor of deep orange blended with dreamy purple. The massive sun, dipping beyond the horizon, scatters long red glimmers across the sea's surface, crafting a shimmering path of light that dances on the waves.
"Haah… it's really so pretty. A sky I've never seen in Seoul."
Seol-ah, fresh from swimming and toweling off, lounges on the sunbed of the outdoor terrace in a luxurious silk gown, murmuring in a languid voice of admiration. Water droplets from the ends of her wet hair trail down her collarbone, sparkling under the red sunset glow.
I lie beside her, my arm softly encircling her slender waist as she naturally rests her head on my shoulder.
"Yeah. Back then, all I knew were those pitch-black night skies after closing up the convenience store post-shift. Lying here like this, watching the sunset… it really feels like time has stopped."
At my words, Seol-ah turns her head and plants a light kiss on the tip of my chin. A salty sea tang mingled with sweet fruit scent wafts from her lips.
"Now erase those convenience store night skies from your memory forever. Every sky you see from here on out will be this dazzling and beautiful. I'll make it that way."
Her vow—blind, unyielding—draws a soft chuckle from me as I gently stroke her forehead.
"Got it, Your Majesty. But what about dinner? Didn't you chase all the staff to the other side of the island earlier?"
Seol-ah flashes a seductive eye-smile and rises gracefully from her spot. The sea breeze lifts her thin silk gown, tracing her perfect silhouette.
"Don't worry. I had them set everything up perfectly on the main beach for sunset. Let's just change into something light and head out."
We slip into airy linen resort wear in our respective dressing rooms, then clasp hands tightly, weaving through the palm grove toward the villa's main beachfront.
The moment my foot sinks into the pristine white sand beyond the palms, I freeze at the surreal spectacle unfolding before me.
"Whoa… Han Seol-ah, seriously…."
In the beach's heart, where the red sunset has fully vanished and thick darkness settles, a grand private canopy stands encircled by gently billowing white silk drapes. Mood lights adorned with hundreds of crystal ornaments dangle from the ceiling, casting a soft orange glow. Beneath them sits a dining table impeccably set for just two. All around on the sand, torches and candles burn at precise intervals, forging a romantic trail of firelight. Onto this vast, serene shore, an entire outdoor restaurant has been transplanted—for us alone.
"You like it? Eating dinner on the beach with the waves crashing… it always looks so romantic in movies."
Seol-ah tugs my arm, beaming with pride. Barefoot, we tread the soft sand into the canopy.
The table gleams with a gourmet feast at perfect serving temperature, as if invisible staff had just finished and vanished: massive lobsters the size of a grown man's forearm, freshly hauled from the South Pacific depths that day; top-grade Hanwoo tenderloin steaks grilled to melt instantly in the mouth; lavish canapés piled with fresh caviar—the sea's diamonds—and truffles.
"Jinwoo, sit down. Tonight, I'll pour the champagne."
Seol-ah guides me to my chair and lifts a chilled bottle from its ice bucket. The master-crafted crystal flute fills with effervescent golden liquid, bubbling crisply.
"To our perfect summer getaway. Cheers."
A clear clink rings out as our glasses touch. The cool, crisp champagne slides down my throat, sending a thrilling tingle through every cell.
The waves become gentle background music, while the candlelight bathes Seol-ah's face across from me—like the world's most enchanting masterpiece.
We lose track of time savoring the flawless feast. Her tender gesture of shelling plump lobster claw meat and feeding it to me; my careful wipe of a stray sauce drip with a napkin, laced with deep affection.
Freed from her ruthless Strategy Planning Director persona at the office, Seol-ah chatters endlessly, her cheeks flushed from the champagne's gentle buzz.
As the meal wraps up and the bottle empties elegantly, the night sky clears to a cloudless expanse, dense with countless stars spilling across it. An overwhelming Milky Way vista, unimaginable under Seoul's ashen haze—like being hurled into the universe's core.
"Jinwoo, wanna take a walk? I'm stuffed—let's stroll the beach."
Seol-ah stands and offers her hand. I grip her small, soft palm firmly and rise.
We leave the canopy, ambling slowly along the shore where waves crash white and foamy. Cool, powdery sand sifts pleasantly between my toes.
The pitch-black beach lacks any man-made light, but the pouring starlight and bright moonlight let us see each other's faces clearly.
After a long stretch of wordless steps synced to the waves, Seol-ah halts abruptly and gazes upward.
"Jinwoo, you see that? Stars everywhere."
"Yeah. Like they're about to pour down. Never seen so many in my life."
"Me neither. But back then… after you up and moved away without a word, leaving me all alone…."
Her voice sinks, calm and wistful as sea mist. Still skyward, she continues slowly.
She finally lowers her gaze, turning to me. In her large eyes, gleaming under the moonlight, ripples the overwhelming joy and tenderness of salvation after ten long, grueling years of waiting.
"All my wishes really came true. Under the world's prettiest starlight, the man I love most is holding my hand tight right now."
Her confession slices sharply, achingly deep into my chest. Silently, I draw her waist close, tuck the stray lock from her forehead behind her ear, and trace the ring on her fourth finger with my thumb.
"Congrats on your wishes coming true."
I lean down, pressing deep, lingering kisses in turn—upon her eyelids, the bridge of her nose, and her moist lips.
We stand on the beach, sharing body heat amid the starlit waves, enveloped in a perfect, absolute warmth no luxury heater could mimic—born solely from our presence.
"Wind's getting chilly. Shall we head in?"
Swinging our joined hands, we pass through the shadowed palm grove back to the brightly lit main villa.
Beyond the grand infinity pool, we open the door to the main bedroom—its transparent glass floor that stunned us this morning.
The room glows with soft indirect lighting, cozy and dreamlike. Beneath the bed's clear floor, underwater lights illuminate the dark sea below, where nocturnal fish glide mysteriously.
"Whoa… at night, it really feels like we're floating right on the ocean."
Seol-ah crawls lightly onto the bed, peering down in awe. I follow, pulling her slender waist tight from behind.
"Fish-watching can wait. Look at me first, Seol-ah."
I whisper low, burying my lips in her nape. She swallows softly, turning her face into my embrace.
Our gazes entwine slowly, the distance unbearable, drawing us closer. At last, we overlap our lips—slowly, deeply.
In the hushed bedroom, our breaths and warmth mingle quietly. Atop the transparent sea, in our world perfectly severed from all else, only heartbeats and waves echo faintly.
An endless, perfect, profound night on the uninhabited island thus quietly enfolds us.
