Splash.
The moment Kim Tae-jun’s mangled, shredded remains fell into the black pool, and his face—still wearing that twisted smile—sank beneath the surface.
The pool of Black Wastewater, filled with darkness, exploded.
And then, I saw what had been submerged within that filth.
Putrid corpses. Severed people.
The victims of Nanjido.
The beings who had created this pit out of their own despair and grief.
They were glowing amidst the darkness.
Absorbing the red and blue lights that had been twisting and devouring the surrounding shadows, they painted a fluid, elegant gradient.
Then, they rose.
Raising their decomposed bodies.
One by one, slowly.
They stood, Black Slime leaking from every orifice in their bodies.
They stood, using that Black Slime to glue together mismatched legs that clearly weren't their own, some even sporting someone else's head attached to their arms.
This is dangerous.
An Otherworldly Power beyond imagination has inhabited those corpses. Judging by the aura alone, every single one of them is at least A-Rank.
I can't make a definitive judgment since the battle hasn't truly begun, but they are certainly stronger than any of the villains I've faced today.
I have to take them down before they all crawl out of that pit.
With that thought, I charged forward to land a preemptive strike.
Crack.
With a gruesome sound, their heads turned toward me in unison.
Perhaps it was the price of a force no human body could withstand.
Even as their neck bones snapped and their putrid, rotten flesh sloughed off their skin, their heads remained dangling over their shoulders, held in place by the power of the Black Slime.
Even though their faces were torn apart—eyes below, mouths above—in a disastrous state, they were definitely connected.
It was quite terrifying to have those hollow cavities, left behind by everything rotting away, staring at me.
Is this any time to be scared, Lee Ha-ram?
Ptu.
I spat out the saliva pooling in my mouth and swung my hammer at the first corpse.
There was no reaction.
The corpses simply watched me.
And then, the impact hit.
"Gah...!"
A human head suddenly appeared.
Flying at an unrecognizable speed, the person's head fulfilled its purpose, splattering brown neurons across my entire body as it burst.
What... is this?
Having the remains of a rotten corpse cover my body was a horrific experience for my sight, hearing, smell, and touch—but I was more shocked by the sheer force of the impact.
Even an O-Rank Monster can't easily break my stance, yet my posture faltered just because a human head flew at me.
Still, it wasn't enough of a shock to stop my attack.
Clutching my side where the impact hit, I slammed my hammer into the ground, spinning once in the air to regain my footing.
Then, I immediately kicked off the ground.
Thud.
A leg bone came flying.
Half-rotted, the bone was exposed, and the flesh hung off it in tatters like shredded chicken.
Because of that, my shoulder popped out of its socket.
As I charged, I slammed my hammer into the ground to force it back into place.
I pushed further.
A finger bone flew at me.
The projectile wasn't large, so the impact wasn't enough to break my stance, but the bone embedded itself in my body.
Of the two joints, only the front one was buried in me; the back joint dangled and swayed with my movements as if boasting of its power. It was quite the interesting decoration.
An indescribable pain flared up.
Why?
I've dealt with puncture wounds like this countless times.
I bit down.
On the rod.
Hard.
Creeeak.
The sound of something cracking echoed in my mouth.
Move forward, Lee Ha-ram.
I will never lose.
Thump.
Something flew and covered me in pink flesh, but this time I could endure it.
Through a vision stained red, I aimed for the first corpse that had crawled out of the well.
I lowered my knees.
I bent my waist.
I funneled every drop of mana into the Magic Staff inside my body.
It’s been a while since I’ve done this.
Amplification. Can I handle it right now?
Boom.
The ground shook, and my vision flickered.
Everything I had been holding back was dredged up.
It hurts.
Run away.
I hate this.
Save me.
Why me?
Get out of my head.
I am a Magical Girl.
The power of justice.
Crash!
I kicked off the ground and lunged forward.
Toward the hollowed-out corpse standing before me.
Toward that worm-eaten thing.
I gripped the handle with both hands and twisted my ankles right in front of The Enemy’s nose.
My hammer, looking crimson through the blood seeping into my eyes, swung through the air.
Boom!
The ground, which hadn't shown a single crack despite all the previous impacts, caved in.
Fortunately, my footing held.
All my strength gathered in my arms.
Into The Hammer at the end of them.
Everything I am converged.
K-Boom!
The corpse was sent flying.
An eyeball that hadn't rotted popped out, flying through the air with the optic nerve still attached.
Scattering bone, flesh, and viscera into the void, the corpse that had possessed the greatest power reverted to a mere body devoid of Otherworldly strength and was sucked back into the well.
Is that only one of them?
It’s fine. At least it’s not at the level where physical attacks don't work, like that nautilus...
Wooooom.
A heavy, vibrating groan echoed.
I turned my head toward the source of the sound.
The black well.
Toward the place where the corpses had been piled.
I don't know who's responsible for this, but they have terrible taste.
It’s disgusting.
The corpses were floating up.
A round orb.
An orb made of a mass of corpses.
Squish. Squelch.
Perhaps because there was no blood left, the fluid squeezing out from between them as they were compressed by an invisible force was Black Slime.
Like being crushed in a press, the flesh, organs, and bones that couldn't withstand the compression burst outward, spraying like buckshot and forming a barrage around the sphere.
"You think I'm just going to let you?"
Devouring my injuries and my fear of The Enemy, I leapt toward the sphere.
The Hammer responded, growing in size.
By the time I reached the apex of my jump, The Hammer, stained with flesh and blood, was as large as the sphere itself.
Squish. Crack.
A brief moment.
The instant where my jumping power and gravity reached equilibrium, a fleeting suspension in the air to swing The Hammer.
In that split second, my body was ravaged by the spray of flesh and bone pouring out like shrapnel.
I probably look just like those corpses by now.
Covered in patches of rotten meat.
With bone fragments protruding through my skin.
We probably look the same.
Thinking of that irony, I swung The Hammer. The Hammer that contained all my strength, meant to annihilate The Enemy.
Splat.
And the attack failed.
A hand reached out from the sphere of corpses.
Pockmarked with holes like blisters on skin and discolored from being haphazardly compressed, it blocked The Hammer, flaunting the uneven texture of the skin fused together.
Pop!
The hand that blocked The Hammer exploded, scattering chunks of meat in all directions, but the sphere itself didn't sustain a single scratch.
...I'm screwed.
Having failed my attack, I fell through the air with nothing to support me.
Squelch.
Another hand reached out from the sphere.
It came for me.
I tried to pull my hammer back and lashed out with my hands and feet to block it.
But I was too late.
The hand grabbed me.
My body began to be crushed under overwhelming pressure.
"Haah..."
I forced strength into my body.
Trying to break free from its grip.
But its next move was faster.
Squish.
A head rose from the sphere.
A smooth, rounded head with protruding cheekbones.
Though it was a grotesque sight with only a single hole for a mouth, one could argue it at least possessed a human shape.
Clack. Clack.
The Hole clattered its teeth as if celebrating its own birth.
It moved its hand.
And swallowed me whole.
Crunch.
Snap.
Gulp.
