The last one yelled, grabbing its fallen buddy and fleeing with it.
I rushed to Seoyeon's side.
“You okay?”

As I knelt by her on the grass and patted her back, she burst into the sobs she'd been holding in, clutching my arm tight. She wailed so pitifully, it felt like the whole forest was crying with her.
“Seoyeon, stop crying now. They're gone.”

But her tears didn't let up. I forced her chin up and wiped her eyes with my hand.

Suppressing the urge, I shrugged off my jacket.
“Put this on for now.”

She whispered so softly it was barely audible, taking my jacket. She stripped off her rags and slipped it on—the hem fell to her calves.

As I relaxed, she asked another question. I glanced around again before answering.
“Retaliation, maybe?”

“Then maybe Eunha and Ye-eun got hit too?”
Her words made me slap on an “oh shit” face and jump up.
“You're right! Let's go find them!”

She'd just been testing me and looked genuinely surprised at my reaction.
“Not going? You don't care about Eunha and Ye-eun?”
I pressed her, and she nodded frantically, scrambling up to follow.
We started trekking through the woods, pretending to search for the nonexistent duo.

But not even five minutes in, Seoyeon called out. She was sitting on the ground, looking up at me.
“...Let's rest a bit.”
She clutched her foot. Peering closer, I saw her bare soles scratched and bloody. My socks had protected me, but not her.
“Hang here a minute.”
“W-where you going?”
“Gonna grab the clothes we ditched. We can wrap your feet with 'em.”
“I'll come too!”
She lunged and grabbed my hand tight.
“Your feet are hurt. How're you gonna walk?”
“I-it's fine! A little rest and it'll be okay!”
“Don't be stubborn. Stay put.”
I tried shaking her off, but she burst into tears.
“No! Don't go!”
“Why not?”
“S-scary! You idiot! What if those monsters come back?!”
Her teary plea hit me like a gut punch. But I steeled myself, shaking her hand free.
I had a goal here.
Get it together. It'll be a bit melodramatic, but to erase her doubts completely, I need to play hardball.
“So Eunha and Ye-eun can just fend for themselves? I knew you were selfish, but this is next-level.”

“I'll go find them alone. Do whatever you want.”
I turned to leave, but her hand grabbed mine again.

She clung to my back. I smiled faintly.
“Got it. I won't. Let go first.”

She released me cautiously. Once free, I knelt and offered my back.
“Why?”
“Hop on. We gotta keep moving to find Eunha and Ye-eun.”
She hesitated, then climbed on obediently.

To my surprise, she felt light—like a backpack stuffed with books.
“A-am I heavy?”
I gripped her slim thighs and stood.
“Nah, not really.”
“R-really?”
“Totally.”
I was carrying her effortlessly—shocking even myself. I could walk all day like this.
