Promotion! The Last Chance
“What? I-Is that really true?”
“Yeah! I’m telling you, it’s true!”
Minseo couldn’t help but make a bewildered face at the coach’s highly agitated shout.
“B-But... why?”
“Why? Because Min Ju-hee got injured this time. Fractured bone—two weeks out!”
“What? But Min Ju-hee was just a sub...”
“Ah!”
In the middle of speaking, Minseo let out an involuntary gasp of realization. It made sense—starting player Seo Yu-in had gotten injured in last week’s match and was still recovering. With a sub player injured on top of that, there was naturally no one left to fill the spot.
“Get it now? Everyone’s in a panic. Yu-in goes down, and now Ju-hee too!”
“B-But why me...”
“Of course I pushed for you as hard as I could! Not that I shoved you in blindly or anything. You know this too, right, Minseo? We’ve only got three days till the GS Caltex match.”
“Ah, yes.”
“In a situation like this, to gel with the team, it’s best to go with someone who’s got a bit of experience and familiarity. Plus, a lot of your peers from the same year are already active pros.”
At those words, Minseo unconsciously clenched her fists tight. Even though she was playing in the second division league, her classmates were already holding their own on the pro stage. How envious she’d been watching them. And whenever she saw them basking in the fans’ cheers on the court, an unbearable self-loathing would torment her. If only I could run on that court too, proud and cheered by the fans...
And now, that dream was becoming reality, right before her eyes.
“...And if you do well this time, you might even lock in a permanent spot.”
As the coach grabbed her shoulder firmly, Minseo’s body tensed up instinctively.
“So run your heart out! This might be your last shot.”
Minseo swallowed the sob threatening to burst out and replied.
“Yes, Coach! I’ll give it everything I’ve got!”
Settling Vital Energy from training.
Please wait a moment.
You have acquired 25 Vital Energy. (Total: 70)
“Phew.”
Back in reality, I took a light breath.
Looks like it went well, at least.
I’d been on pins and needles, wondering if Minseo might reject my offer, but thankfully, she accepted it readily enough. Not that she fully trusted me or anything...
...Doesn’t matter. I just need to confirm it works.
With that thought, I immediately used the Position Upgrade item on Kim Minseo.
Would you like to use Position Upgrade (1 use) on Kim Minseo?
Caution. The item you are attempting to use is one-time use. It cannot be undone after use.
[Yes / No]
Without a moment’s hesitation, I hit Yes on the confirmation prompt.
Would you like to view Kim Minseo's information?
[Yes / No]
“Did it work?”
I swallowed hard and immediately pulled up Kim Minseo’s info.

“Oh...”
The app leveled up from 2 to 3, and now it had some real Manager App features. I let out a small gasp of admiration and tapped View Details next to Personal Stats.
“This is pretty legit...”
Thankfully, there were no issues viewing Kim Minseo’s personal stats. The terms were all straightforward at a glance. That said, since I wasn’t big into volleyball, it was hard to judge if these were good or bad numbers.
Hmm... Looks like she’s an attacker type, at least.
It’d be great if I could compare with other players, but unfortunately, the only way to check another player’s stats was to add them to my list. No other options for now.
“Can’t upgrade these stats, huh?”
On a whim, I selected a random stat, and a new prompt popped up.
Would you like to raise Personal Skill (54)?
Requires 10 Vital Energy to raise Personal Skill (54) by 1 point.
[Yes / No]
“Pretty cheap. Maybe because it’s low?”
Thinking that, I hit No and selected her highest stat, Scoring Instinct.
Would you like to raise Scoring Instinct (77)?
Requires 100 Vital Energy to raise Scoring Instinct (77) by 1 point.
[Yes / No]
“Holy shit...”
I cursed under my breath at the exponentially higher Vital Energy cost. Total rip-off. But thinking about it, it made sense. This let you boost innate talents with zero effort—just a tap. Even God-given gifts.
“Yeah, nothing good comes easy in this world.”
After catching my breath, I closed the personal stats and tapped View Details on her occupation.

“Oh... it even shows this stuff?”
I gasped at the surprisingly detailed info window.
Seoul native, huh. And tall as expected for a volleyball player.
I recalled seeing Kim Minseo in real life. Even in regular sneakers, she towered over most. She’d completely overshadowed her friend Yu Seoyeon—enough to drag her out of the restaurant by force.
Tsk tsk.
I closed the window and shut down the Manager App.
“Whew, alright... Let’s grab some food and think this over.”
Muttering to myself, I got up and headed out for lunch.
