Chapter 71: Mad God Inheritance
Chapter 71: Mad God Inheritance
Only after I had drunk every last drop of the Spirit Void Stone Milk did I stop. A lingering fragrance remained on my lips and teeth, and a cool current flowed through my body, indescribably comfortable. It felt as though every pore on my body had opened, absorbing the air around me. A fresh bodily fragrance drifted from me, and the skin on my body became as warm and translucent as the stone pillar from before. Smacking my lips, I laughed and said, “Refreshing. This is really refreshing. Big Brother, this stuff tastes amazing. Is there any more?”
Theomandis gave a bitter smile. “In three thousand years, I only produced this little. Where would there be any more? If it had been naturally formed, I’m afraid even ten thousand years might not have yielded this much. You drank it all and you’re still not satisfied.”
I chuckled and said, “It’s not that I’m not satisfied. It just tastes too good. I’ve never drunk such an exquisite delicacy in my life.”
Theomandis’s voice turned serious. “Enough. You’ve drunk the Spirit Void Stone Milk, so let’s begin now. Put your sword aside.”
My heart tightened. Following his instructions, I set Mo Ming beneath the stone wall and walked back to the center.
“Stand still and don’t move. No matter what scene appears, you must remain calm and composed. Do you understand? Your emotions absolutely must not fluctuate. We’re starting.”
I felt the surrounding air gradually grow scorching hot. A huge golden hexagram appeared beneath my feet, and countless unknown symbols floated out from it, slowly circling around me. More and more symbols appeared. They gradually condensed in midair, merging into an enormous and extremely intricate symbol that slowly drifted toward me. It kept shrinking smaller and smaller, and by the time it reached me, it was only the size of a teacup rim. It floated above my head and hovered there.
A figure of light gradually appeared before me. The light and shadow grew clearer and clearer, slowly taking human form. It was a handsome blond man. The intricate symbol that had floated above my head suddenly shot forward and stamped itself onto the center of the man’s brow. He had a strong, imposing build, and a complicated expression in his eyes. His long golden hair floated in the air, making him appear extraordinarily handsome. There was an air of pride on his face, carrying the imposing aura of a hero who seemed to say that no one under heaven could rival him. He simply looked at me. Although he was only a transparent image, I knew that he must be my newly acknowledged big brother—the Mad God, Theomandis.
Just as I was about to speak, Theomandis frowned at me. I suddenly remembered what he had just said and immediately shut my mouth, smoothing down the excitement in my heart and controlling my emotions.
The blond Theomandis smiled in satisfaction and slowly spread his arms. Intense golden light burst from his body, instantly filling the entire cavern. The golden radiance gradually enveloped both of us, and from the far end of the cave, the Mad God Armor slowly floated over and stopped above him.
Theomandis kept changing the shape of his mouth, chanting incantations I could not understand. Suddenly, the intricate symbol on his brow blazed with light, and his eyes instantly turned gold. The Mad God Armor in the air abruptly split apart with a sharp clang. In the blink of an eye, every piece covered his body. The originally dark armor turned golden yellow. Wearing the armor, Theomandis looked incomparably mighty.
He stared fixedly into my eyes without blinking. Suddenly, the phantom of his body separated from the armor once more. The golden armor remained suspended in the air, flashing with light, while the intricate symbol above Theomandis’s head shot toward me like lightning. I had only just started in alarm when that symbol had already stamped itself onto the center of my brow.
A sensation I had never experienced before swept through my entire body. Scene after scene, too blurry to make out clearly, flashed endlessly before my eyes, as if I had lived through thousands upon thousands of years. A vast, righteous energy came from my brow, forcing my dark magic power to shrink into one corner under its pressure. My whole body was instantly enveloped in that immense righteous aura. The cool energy produced by the Spirit Void Stone Milk I had just drunk surged upward at great speed and merged into it. At once, I felt as if my entire body had been completely renewed.
Theomandis’s figure floated toward me. When he reached me, he turned around and completely merged into my body. Instantly, the Mad God Battle Energy within me, the immense righteous aura brought by that intricate symbol, and the cool energy of the Spirit Void Stone Milk fused into one. Centered on me, they released a golden radiance even stronger than the one Theomandis had just emitted.
The Mad God Armor floating in the air gave a faint tremor. The Heart-Protector Mirror flew over first. With a bang, it embedded itself in front of my chest. Next came the chest armor. The two sections locked together over my torso, one in front and one behind. After that came the shoulder armor, arm guards, gauntlets, waist armor, hip guards, battle skirt, greaves, and battle boots in sequence.
Only after putting on the armor did I realize what made it so remarkable. Unlike its solid outward appearance, when worn, I could barely feel its weight at all. It was like putting on an ordinary coat. At the very top of the chest armor was a collar that turned slightly upward and could protect the neck. The waist armor resembled overlapping scales. The shoulder armor extended outward to both sides, the outer tips curving slightly upward. Most miraculous of all were the joints. The entire set of armor was closely connected, yet the joints did not feel tight in the slightest. I could still move as freely as if I were not wearing armor at all. This was true whether it was the large joints like the shoulders, elbows, hips, and knees, or the small joints such as the finger joints of the gauntlets. After donning the entire set, I felt as though I had completely changed.
The whole cavern suddenly turned into a riot of five-colored light. Ring after ring of colorful radiance enclosed me within. My body suddenly jolted, and a vast, irresistible force surged toward me from all directions, continuously pouring into my body. To be honest, it did not hurt, but it felt unbearably full. This must have been the transfer of the Mad God’s power.
Gradually, I felt as though my body were swelling larger and larger like a balloon. Streak after streak of golden lightning coursed over the surface of the Mad God Armor. The intense swelling pain made my consciousness gradually blur. Countless strange symbols appeared around me and continuously entered my body through the center of my brow. My six senses disappeared one by one. At last, I was released from it. My consciousness left me.
As I officially began to receive the inheritance, the entire hill turned into five-colored brilliance. A five-colored auspicious cloud drifted over in the sky and remained suspended above it. Tian Yun, who had just been about to make a decision, was startled at once when he saw this abnormal phenomenon. The other members of the Saint Dragon Knights Corps also gathered around.
Yue Wuyai said, “This is? What is this?”
Tian Yun said expressionlessly, “This is the inheritance of a god. If I’m not mistaken, there is a deity from the God Realm inside the cave, and one with extremely great power at that. But why would he pass on his divine spark? Could it be that he’s about to die? But the lifespan of gods is endless.”
Li Feng said, “Big Brother, then hurry up and make your decision. Destroy this place.”
Tian Yun waved his hand. “Wait a little longer.”
At that moment, the entire hill changed from five-colored to gold. A violent energy burst out from within it, and that enormous force rapidly expanded outward. The seventeen members of the Saint Dragon Knights Corps bore the brunt of it. With their strength, they were actually forced back a hundred meters. Only Tian Yun, Yue Wuyai, and Li Feng remained standing where they were.
Tian Yun said in astonishment, “What a powerful force of inheritance. Just a bit of the aftershock is already this intense. This should be the inheritance of a First-Rank Deity. As for why I know about First-Rank Deities, that will be explained later. A First-Rank Deity? Ah, I know who is inside the cave now.”
Tian Yun began chanting his magic. Brilliant white light radiated from his entire body. Li Feng thought he was about to unleash Star Dragon Rain and excitedly prepared to cooperate, only to hear Tian Yun say, “Do not act rashly. This place cannot be destroyed. All of you, fall back. I’m going to seal this place up. Even if the person inside has received the god’s inheritance, it is impossible for him to immediately obtain the god’s power. We must follow Heaven’s will. As long as we imprison him, that will be enough.”
Hearing Tian Yun say this, Li Feng had no choice but to abandon his idea and obediently retreat as Yue Wuyai pulled him back.
The white light around Tian Yun gradually intensified. As the auspicious clouds in the sky disappeared, he chanted, “O light I protect, please permit me to borrow your power. Light of Protection, return. Lock this eternal instant. Forbidden—Eternal Protection.”
As he chanted, a large amount of white light poured out from his body, forming a white barrier in the air that enveloped the entire hill. Having used two light-element forbidden spells in succession in such a short time, even Tian Yun looked somewhat fatigued.
God Realm, God King’s Hall.
Raphael, the Charm Angel, beat his six snow-white wings and stood frowning in the center of the divine hall.
“Your Majesty the God King, you felt that fluctuation of Theomandis’s energy just now as well, didn’t you?”
The God King’s gentle voice rang out. “Yes. Could it be that he still hasn’t died?”
Raphael shook his head. “Back then, the three of us personally destroyed Theomandis. I saw with my own eyes that his physical body was reduced to ashes. How could he not be dead? Unless... unless...” As though he had thought of something, his eyes suddenly widened.
The God King said calmly, “You only just realized it? Back when you reported to me that he had been destroyed, I had already thought of it. Among the six First-Rank Deities, although Lucifer the traitor was outwardly the strongest, the one with the greatest potential and the greatest tenacity was Theomandis. If I am not mistaken, there are only two possibilities for him in the human world now. One, his divine consciousness has fully dissipated. Two, his divine consciousness has been transferred. What all of you overlooked was the armor personally forged for him by Father God. Back then, because of Gabriel, I wrongly imprisoned him, and that also caused the death of Princess Feier Yunna. But regret is useless now. No matter which of the two possibilities applies to Theomandis, he will no longer have any impact on the God Realm. Therefore, I will not permit you archangels to do anything further that would affect the human world. You understand my meaning. Go and tell Gabriel that if he causes any more trouble, then he should never come to see me again.”
Raphael’s expression changed several times. He sighed and lowered his head. “Yes, Your Majesty the God King. Then I shall take my leave.”
The God King said, “Wait. Tell Gabriel that once the princess can fully withstand her own power, he is to bring her back immediately. Our time is running short. At the very least, she will need a year to prepare herself to accept the challenge of the Netherworld. I refuse to believe that Hades can choose from among his subordinates, whose lifespans do not even reach one thousand years, someone capable of standing against my daughter. Hades, the Netherworld can never contend with our God Realm.”
When the God King mentioned Hades, emotion appeared in his voice for the first time—intense hatred.
“Yes, Your Majesty the God King.”
Netherworld, Nether King’s Hall.
Boom.
Violent gray-black energy destroyed everything inside the great hall. If not for the Nether King’s Hall itself being constructed with exceptional sturdiness, coupled with the barrier Hades had released, this holy hall where the highest ruler of the Netherworld passed judgment might well have been destroyed on the spot.
Nether King Hades breathed lightly as he looked at Lucifer, the fallen angel archdemon, whose lips were already streaked with blood. The series of battles just now had left even the ruler of the Netherworld feeling weary. Lucifer’s increase in strength was not what surprised him most. What shocked him most was Lucifer’s astonishing fighting spirit.
The Nether King shouted angrily, “Lucifer, are you trying to rebel? Have you forgotten who took you in when you were hunted down by the God Realm?”
The six black wings behind Lucifer flapped gently. Cold rays shot from his pitch-black eyes as he said in a deep voice, “Lord Hades, of course I have not forgotten your kindness. But Theomandis is my brother. Back then, it was he who brought me to the Netherworld. I felt his divine consciousness. If I do not go to the human world to look for him, and that bunch of bastards from the God Realm finds him first, then he will be finished. Please let me go.”
Hades smiled faintly. “I never thought the always calm and wise fallen angel Lucifer would have moments of panic as well, or lose his composure. Think about it. Would the God King casually allow Gabriel and the others to go to the human world? Though they all possess that strength, does Sophia not fear offending Father God? Father God has always been very protective of the human world. So you can rest assured. If Theomandis’s divine consciousness truly scattered completely just now, then it would be useless even if you went. If he is still alive, then judging from the fluctuation of energy just now, it will not take him too long to return to both the God and Nether Realms. When that time comes, are you still afraid you won’t see your brother?”
After hearing Hades’s words, Lucifer gradually calmed down. Though he was still somewhat unwilling, he also understood that it was impossible for him to defeat Hades, and without defeating Hades, he would never be able to go to the human world. He sighed and said dejectedly, “If that’s the case, then all I can do is wait. Theomandis, my brother, you must hold on. I will keep waiting for your return. Lord Hades, I’m sorry about just now.”
Hades secretly let out a sigh of relief. Lucifer’s ferocity had exceeded his estimate. If Lucifer truly fought with everything he had, then even if Hades won, he would still have to pay a considerable price.
“Lucifer, I understand how you feel. Have you decided on the person who will represent us in our contest against the God Race?”
Lucifer froze. “Your Majesty, how am I supposed to decide that? Those who have come to the Netherworld less than a thousand years ago are all insignificant clowns. There isn’t a single one I think highly of.”
Unlike the God Realm, the inhabitants of the Netherworld were all reborn from powerful energies after death. There were also powerful beings such as necromancers who could come directly to the Netherworld.
Hades smiled faintly. “Even so, you should still choose one to focus on training. It seems this time, we will probably lose the contest with the God Realm.”
Lucifer said with some dissatisfaction, “I really don’t know why Father God made us hold some kind of rookie competition between the God and Nether Realms after the end of the Second World War. What meaning does it have? I truly want to go cut off Gabriel’s rotten head and avenge Theomandis and Princess Feier Yunna. Lord Hades, do you know who the God Race will send to fight this time?”
Hades sighed. “I don’t know either. But I have a feeling that we won’t win this contest. Still, it doesn’t matter. Let those God Race people feel proud for now.”
A trace of evil light flashed through Lucifer’s eyes. “God Race. One day, I will destroy all of you.”
I gradually regained consciousness. The appearance of the cave had not changed at all, except that the Mad God Armor had disappeared, and I was still naked. Looking around, I shouted, “Big Brother! Big Brother Theomandis!”
Theomandis’s voice was low and weak. “Brother, congratulations. The inheritance was a great success. You are already the second-generation Mad God.”
I said anxiously, “Big Brother, how are you?”
Theomandis smiled easily. “I’m about to go see Feier Yunna. My Feier Yunna... I’m coming. Brother, don’t be sad. Where there is meeting, there is parting. Originally, I thought that after passing on the inheritance to you, I would no longer have any strength left to speak with you. But your talent exceeded my expectations. The inheritance went exceptionally smoothly, so I can still preserve a tiny trace of weak energy.”
Had I really already accepted the inheritance? Why did I feel almost nothing at all? I only felt clear-minded and refreshed. My Mad God Battle Energy seemed somewhat stronger than before, but not in the sense of a sudden explosive increase. It had only risen a little.
I said coldly, “Big Brother, don’t worry. One day, I will definitely avenge you. I will make Gabriel’s soul scatter and vanish forever, never to be reborn.”
By the end, my words had turned ice-cold, and an intense killing intent surged from my body.
Theomandis said, “Good. That is also my only wish. Brother, there is something I didn’t tell you before because I was afraid it would affect your inheritance. Now I should tell you. Outside, there are many powerful energies gathered. Just when the inheritance was taking place, they sealed this place with a barrier. My energy is now too weak. I can no longer teleport you out, so everything will have to depend on yourself.”
Theomandis’s voice gradually weakened. In fits and starts, he continued, “The Mad God Armor... has already fused... into... your... body. As... your... Mad God Art... improves... they... will... gradually... become... usable... by you. Right now... the only parts... you can use... are... the chest armor... and the Heart-Protector Mirror... that’s all... When... you... need... them... you only... need... to chant... the spell... ‘Mad God Battle Armor’... and... focus... your mind... on them... and that... will do. When... your life... is in danger... they... will also... automatically... protect... you. Also... remember... to go... find... the helmet... as soon... as possible... and complete... the Mad God Armor. As for... Big Brother Lucifer’s... skills... you must... not... neglect... them... either... you must... continue... cultivating them. Later... if... you... go to... the Netherworld... and meet... Big Brother... Lucifer... then... tell... him... that I... Theomandis... will forever... be... his... brother... and that... in my heart... he... will always... be... my... big brother. Brother... I... have to... go now. I... will be... in the Land of Chaos... blessing... you...”
By the end, his voice was nearly inaudible. Suddenly, the currents of air around us changed slightly, as if all the spiritual energy within the cavern had vanished in an instant.
Two streams of hot tears ran down my cheeks. I knew that he was gone. With a thud, I dropped to my knees and kowtowed nine times with force. Crying out, I said, “Big Brother, go in peace. Your brother will always remember your kindness. You will definitely be reunited with Princess Feier Yunna.”
One side of the cave wall suddenly vanished soundlessly, revealing an empty tunnel. So that wall had all along been an illusion formed by Theomandis with his own energy.
I wiped away my tears and stood up. Theomandis was already gone. No matter how much I cried, it would be useless. I might as well focus all my energy on the immediate danger before me. For Theomandis to call those forces outside powerful, they definitely could not be ordinary. Most likely, the people of the Saint Dragon Knights Corps had already surrounded this place. Whether I could escape was still unknown.
I took out a set of clothes from my Jiezi Pouch and changed into them, picked up Mo Ming from the side, and walked toward the tunnel. After turning a corner, I found Jin and Yin lying on the ground together with Panzong. They had not fainted. They were asleep. Having reverted to their beast forms, they were letting out loud snores one after another.
“Big Brother, Second Brother, Second Sister, wake up.”
I pushed Panzong, then pushed Jin and Yin, and checked their bloodlines in passing. Everything in their bodies was normal. Panzong woke first.
“Ah, Fourth Brother, are you alright? Where is this?”
Jin also gradually woke up. “Fourth Brother, are you alright?”
Hearing that the first thing they did after waking was ask about my safety, my heart warmed.
“Don’t worry, I’m fine. But our danger hasn’t passed yet. Outside, there are probably a large number of people from the Saint Dragon Knights Corps standing guard.”
Yin said in shock, “You mean...”
I nodded gravely. “That’s right. The same group of Dragon Generals as Li Feng and the others. Maybe even two people stronger than Li Feng have also come here.”
Panzong asked, “Fourth Brother, did you discover anything in this cave?”
I nodded. “Big Brother, it’s too much to explain clearly in a short time. You can say that I obtained a divine artifact, but with my current strength, I still have no way to use it. We have to go out now. We’ll adapt according to the situation.”
Jin said, “Since there are so many powerful forces guarding the outside, then let’s just stay here. Even starving to death is better than being killed by them. In any case, they can’t get in.”
I smiled bitterly. “After I obtained that divine artifact, the natural defenses here disappeared. They can come in at any time. Let’s go. I’m afraid they’ll collapse the stone cave. If we get buried alive, then there won’t be even the slightest chance left.”
Panzong and Jin and Yin exchanged a look. “Then all we can do is see how lucky we are.”
From their expressions, I could tell that they did not hold much hope of escaping.
“Big Brother, after you entered the cave, did you discover anything?”
Panzong smiled bitterly. “After we came in, we passed out. We only woke up when you called us just now.”
I nodded. It seemed that after Theomandis pulled us into the cave, he had hypnotized the two of them.
“Let’s go out.”
As I said this, I took the lead and walked toward the tunnel.
Panzong and Jin and Yin followed behind me. From the sound of their footsteps, I could tell that their moods were heavy. Mine was the same. Facing the Saint Dragon Knights Corps, this impossible enemy, a wave of discouragement rose inside me. Although I had obtained the inheritance of the Mad God Theomandis, if I could not get past this immediate trial, then everything would be for nothing. Li Feng must hate us to the core. Would he really let me off so easily?
The tunnel no longer circled in place like last time. After turning three bends, everything suddenly brightened, and the cave entrance appeared right in front of us.
I hesitated for a moment, then strode out boldly. As the inheritor of the Mad God, at the moment of life and death, I absolutely could not retreat.
Even though we had prepared ourselves mentally, we were still stunned by the scene before us. The moment we stepped out of the cave, the first thing we saw was a white curtain of light. The light curtain enveloped the entire mountain peak. Its sacred aura was lofty and inviolable. Although I did not know what kind of magic this was, I understood that it was not something we could break through. And if someone could cast magic of such power, then I thought there could only be one person—the Light Guardian Tian Yun, leader of the Saint Dragon Knights Corps.
After we came out, the dazzling light curtain gradually faded so that we could see the scene outside. I stopped Panzong and Jin and Yin, telling them not to transform. Then I took two steps forward and shouted loudly, “People of the Saint Dragon Knights Corps, come out.”
More than ten enormous flying dragons descended from the sky and landed before us. At the front, the mage riding the white dragon lifted a hand, and the light curtain before us vanished. My heart jolted. Could this really be Tian Yun, the Light Guardian? He looked far too young. He was looking at me with what seemed like a smile, as though he found me very interesting. Li Feng stood beside him, his gaze toward us carrying a trace of hatred.
“So you are Tian Yun, the leader of the Saint Dragon Knights Corps?”
Li Feng shouted angrily, “Insolence! Who allowed you to call my Big Brother by name? You’re at death’s door and still don’t realize it?”
Tian Yun raised a hand to stop him from speaking further and said mildly, “That’s right, I am Tian Yun. How did you learn of our Saint Dragon Knights Corps? Even in the Dragon God Empire, this should still be a secret.”
I gave a cold laugh. “A secret? I’m afraid that before long, it will become a secret known by all. As for how I learned of it, do you think I’d tell you?”
Despite my provocation, Tian Yun’s expression did not change at all. He still said mildly, “Young man, don’t speak so aggressively. I know you’ve just obtained something precious, but do you really think you have the ability to contend against all of us?”
I let out a cold snort and said without courtesy, “You old monsters who refuse to die only know how to meddle in other people’s affairs. Treasures belong to the worthy. The lot of you together must be more than two thousand years old, yet you’re bullying a teenager like me. Don’t you feel ashamed?”
If we wanted to escape from here, then we had to find an opportunity, and such an opportunity would not appear easily. So I first had to use words to keep him in check.
Tian Yun still did not get angry. He stopped the impulsive Li Feng and said, “You’re right. We old monsters who refuse to die really are rather annoying. How about this? I can give you a relatively fair chance. If I make a move, you’ll say I’m bullying you. Then again, you three put together are probably close to two hundred years old, aren’t you? You can all attack together. As long as you can fight my second brother Yue Wuyai to a draw, I’ll let you go. Otherwise...”
There was a reason Tian Yun chose Yue Wuyai to fight. Although he had discovered that the other three were not very strong, one of them had, after all, received a god’s inheritance. Who knew what sort of special abilities he might possess? Among them, only Tian Yun, Li Feng, and Yue Wuyai had the confidence to win for certain, while Li Feng was too impulsive and might accidentally kill the other side. Tian Yun himself did not wish to act personally, so Yue Wuyai was the best choice.
I pressed, “Otherwise what?”
Tian Yun smiled faintly. “I won’t kill you. It has been many years since I stained myself with blood, and I certainly won’t make an exception for you. If you lose, then come with me. For as long as I live, you must remain by my side and not leave even half a step. What do you say?”
The three of us were all stunned. It was not because this condition was too harsh, but because it was too generous. If we won, we could leave. Even if we lost, our lives would not be in danger. After hearing him out, my thoughts raced.
“Can I change the method of the match a little?”
Li Feng snapped angrily, “My Big Brother is already giving you such favorable terms, and you still want to nitpick? Big Brother, let me do it. I alone can take care of the three of them.”
Tian Yun frowned. “Third Brother, from this moment on, you are not allowed to speak.”
Then he looked at me. “Young man, tell me your method.”
Li Feng seemed very fearful of Tian Yun. Muttering a few words under his breath, he retreated to one side.
I looked at Panzong and Jin and Yin, then said, “I want to challenge Yue Wuyai alone. If I lose, I’ll go with you.”
Before I could finish speaking, Panzong and Jin and Yin were simultaneously alarmed.
“Fourth Brother, are you crazy? The three of us together might not be able to defeat that guy. How can you do it alone?”
For the first time, even Tian Yun revealed a look of surprise.
“Young man, do you really think you can defeat my second brother by yourself? Since you know of our Saint Dragon Knights Corps, then you should also have heard the name of Yue Wuyai, the Blazing-Rain War God. If you go alone, you won’t have any chance at all.”
I gave a mocking smile. “Even if the three of us fought together, would we really have any chance of winning? I’m not finished yet. My fighting alone has conditions. First, I want to make one thing clear. Once we entered the cave, my two elder brothers both passed out. They know nothing. On this point, I can swear on a warrior’s honor. So the only person you need to imprison is me alone. My two elder siblings are of no use to you at all. Therefore, my condition is that whether I win or lose, you must let them go.”
