Lightning's Shocking Debut
- Yes! 2052 Eternal Combat Academy Korea Summer! Today marks Round 2, but honestly, it's the biggest matchup of the entire season!
- That's right. The powerhouse team Brilliant, who's held the top spot in the Academy League for over two years without fail! And the hottest team this summer, Shining Star! It's the day these two face off.
- Since they ended Round 1 in a 1:1 draw, today's match is even more crucial. The winner here has a real shot at claiming first place in the season standings.
- Last time, they couldn't settle the score! Will the scales tip one way this time, or will they stay perfectly balanced again? Let's watch. First up, Team Brilliant!
While the team and player introductions played out, I stood at the in-game coach's seat, looking down at our players prepping below.
The most critical player today was our midlaner, Seona. For this match, I'd drilled her relentlessly on the new champion all week—from the moment she woke up until she went to bed.
Aside from the time spent on the others' special training, I'd passed on every bit of knowledge I had about the new champ. I'd fine-tuned every movement, every skill placement, coaching her through it all.
...I just hoped that blockhead remembered at least half of what I taught her.
Soon, both teams began selecting their champions in order.
Brilliant's picks were right on script—no surprises. Their best comp, led by Oh Sujin's Burning Spirit, backed by four supports.
And then it was our turn for the final pick.
- Alright, now Shining Star pulls their last card.
- Looking at the comp, mid's still open. With Shin Sera picking Blade Master, no carry-mid swap possible.
- So what'll they go for...? Uh... what?!
- No way!!!
- Whoa... Shining Star, what a bold move!
Shining Star 5th Pick: Lightning
The massive screen in the center of the in-game arena displayed a champion name no one had ever seen on this stage.
Seona, infused with the champion's powers, shimmered with occasional sparks, like she was charged with blue electricity.
Current (Q) - Applies sustained damage and heavy slow to a target enemy. No effect if other enemies are nearby.
Electromagnetic Field (W) - Places a hemispherical electromagnetic shield at a target location. Shields all allied champions and structures inside from external basic attacks. Also greatly increases attack speed for allies within.
Spark Race (E) - Summons a lurking lightning wraith at a target area. If an enemy enters the wraith's vision, it attaches and explodes, dealing massive area damage and briefly reducing enemy movement speed to 0.
Lightning Clone (R) - Summons a perfect clone of yourself for a short duration. The clone can use all your skills and items (except ultimate), with independent cooldowns. All cooldowns reset upon clone creation.
- No way! Lightning! A champion not even ten days out from release hits the pro stage!
- User opinions on Lightning are super polarized right now. "Total trash champ," "OP if you know how to play," "broken"... It's rare for a champ to split the community this hard. And they picked it!
- From what I know, Lightning hasn't appeared in any league worldwide—not Korea, not anywhere. No established tier list, no item builds...
Regardless of its strength, pros figured it wouldn't show up anytime soon since even they were divided on it.
- But it did! Right here, right now! We're not seeing things, the feed's not glitched! Lightning! Shining Star mid Kim Seona has picked it!
- They picked it, now they gotta show the answer sheet. With all the debate around Lightning, time to prove why!
The casters, witnessing Lightning's global pro debut, couldn't hide their excitement as gamers first and foremost.
The crowd and viewers watching the match were hyped too. Cheers erupted at Lightning's appearance, and Eternal Combat communities lit up with live updates.
A screenshot of Seona sparking up spread across communities. Even for Academy League, Lightning's debut drew instant reactions.
Seona's killer looks and figure, combined with the world-first pro appearance of Lightning, had Shining Star stealing the spotlight once more.
###
"Check this out. Sparks coming off my body. Cool, right?"
"Looks kinda dangerous..."
"Touch it. It's just visuals—no shock."
Sera's eyes lit up first, poking Seona cautiously with a finger.
"For real. Feels just like normal Seona unnie."
"Me too!"
"Me three!"
"Hey hey, enough poking! Match is starting! Unnie, hands off my chest too!"
And the game began.
Rematching in mid, Oh Sujin and Seona locked eyes, glaring daggers.
"Pulling out a champ not even ten days old? Guess you think I'm a pushover?"
"A little? Heh heh."
"That...!"
Early laning favored Sujin's Burning Spirit. High skill damage made it strong in lane, and Seona's Lightning was behind in skill specialization.
But Seona kept harassing with Current after clearing enemy waves.
"Hey, Kim Seona. Enemy support's MIA."
Yuna, solo 1v3 in offlane, pinged the missing enemy supports.
Unlike her usual instant retreat on MIA calls, Seona held position, maintaining standoff with Sujin.
"Hey, you deaf? Enemy support's probably top river!"
"Got it, heard you unnie."
"You wanna die again? Retreat already—"
"I got a plan."
Yuna's face went blank.
'Kim Seona has a plan? Am I dying already?'
"Seona, enemy support's heading river. Pull back now or you're in real danger."
Hayoung warned again from map watch, but Seona didn't budge.
This wasn't Seona being stubborn.
It was my instruction.
- Spark Race lasts about a minute. Mana-wise, you can plant three in alleys.
- Then I run out for skill trades?
- Don't need to. You win late anyway. Just maintain safe distance from her skills, plant Spark Races in support gank paths.
- Lasts a minute? When to start?
- From Hayoung or Yuna's MIA call.
Brilliant's two supports circled mid tower side, aiming to flank Seona.
Passing river into our red side hill, they hid in tower-side bushes. Wait for wave push, then Sujin pressures while they block escape—guaranteed kill.
"Here, stay hidden."
"Got it. Hide in the forest and..."
"Heh heh, found you!"
"Gah!"
The two supports jumped. No way Kim Seona could be in that tiny bush.
"W-We got spotted? We warded!"
"No, that's not Lightning—look close!"
One pointed at the bush Seona. No legs. Upper body sparked like the real deal, but lower half ghostly and faint. A fake.
"Heh heh, found you!"
"Heh heh, found you!"
But not just one fake. Two more spawned at the first spot. Three ghostly Kim Seonas—spark wraiths ignoring terrain—rushed the first visible support.
Seona's Spark Races, planted right after Yuna's MIA.
"W-What the hell!"
"Retreat!"
"No escaping. Spark Races move way faster than champs."
I muttered to myself. Sure enough, they closed fast, attached, and exploded massively.
"Arghhh!"
"Why does it hurt so much!"
"Three traps. That level supports can't tank 'em all."
Three explosions: one took two hits, health shredded; the other one hit. And topping it off...
"L-Legs won't move!"
The electric ghosts paralyzed, zeroing movement speed. Just one second, but enough for nearby Seona to arrive.
"Come to play?"
"Son of a...!"
Grinning, Seona slapped Current on one. Isolated target melted under DoT. One left.
"Sujin unnie! Do something about this bitch!"
"Here! Hold on!"
Sujin, spotting the mid tower skirmish, rushed and unloaded skills. Seona's health plummeted; now she was the one at risk.
"Hit her! Basic attacks alone'll kill!"
"Got her!"
"Ow ow! It hurts!"
- Save Electromagnetic Field for the absolute last second. Long cooldown—not for casual use.
- Then when?
- When enemies push our tower: cover it. When we push: cover our champs. Final: when their skills are down and they're autoing—over your head.
Seona grunted, deploying Electromagnetic Field on herself. Swirling hemispherical currents enveloped her tight radius. Incoming autos vanished into the vortex. Brief basic attack immunity—Seona counterattacked.
"Wooo! Power surging! You hit me just now!? You! You! You!"
Attack speed boosted, she shredded the low-health support inside the field.
And...
"Heh heh, found you!"
Fourth Spark Race, summoned at fight start, finished delay and latched the nearby support.
Already battered pre-fight, the support couldn't hold.
"This... can't... be..."
Last words before the second support fell. Sujin's skills on cooldown—nothing she could do. With both roamers dead, she bit her lip and retreated.
"Unbelievable! Kim Seona! With new champ Lightning, survives 1v3 and takes two kills!"
"Shining Star!!!"
"From the MIA ping, I watched—Seona kept planting Spark Races in her tower-side bush. Three down, enemies walk right into it. If she predicted this... chills, man."
"Instant double kill! Gold vacuumed solo?!"
"Lightning's debut is no joke. Wonder what she'll buy with that gold... Huh?"
"Wait, that item..."
The hyped casters paused at Seona's item choice.
"Going Golden Gauntlet?"
"Early game monster farm into Golden Gauntlet? What's the play?"
What play? Hard carry Lightning starter.
The world's shock had just begun.
