Spam Salvation and the Villainess's Labor Contract
Soggy Spam and canned laughter. Tap, tap. Cold sweat like ice trailed down my chin, soaking the filthy concrete floor. Zone 17 Bunker beneath the Imperial capital. At the end of that dim, damp entrance passage. Weeeeng—clunk. Two automated targeting Gatling turrets—CIWS—hung from the ceiling above, their red laser sensors flickering as they scanned the darkness. The pinnacle of modern defensive engineering, capable of unleashing 3,000 rounds per minute of tungsten armor-piercing bullets. But even with this overwhelming weaponry overhead, the primal fear crawling up my spine wouldn't fade.
"Hoo... haa..."
My ragged, parched breaths filtered through the gas mask's purifier, twisting into a eerie metallic rasp that hung in the air. My bloodshot eyes, forced awake against exhaustion, throbbed like they might burst. The only lifeline was the cold barrel of the M870 Pump-Action Shotgun clutched between my knees.
"...They could show up any second."
A jittery mutter leaked from my cracked lips. Stripping Knight Captain Kellun and his goons had been nothing but a miracle born of sheer information asymmetry. A cheap win by blinding them with flashbangs, shattering their focus to deploy Aura. But what if they'd plugged their ears tight, narrowed their vision with heavy helmets, and charged with every ounce of mana poured into Aura shields? Even tungsten AP rounds might not punch through a horde of them in one go—I couldn't guarantee it. The second my mag ran dry, a single mana blade swing would send my head flying.
It was the brutal power gap an extra like me had to face, harsh reality laid bare.
"Just try it, you fucks. I'll grind you to dust, bones and all..."
I gripped the shotgun's pump, eyes bulging. But no matter how long I waited, no signs came from beyond the sealed iron door. If they were the crown prince's hounds, they'd have torn the whole sewer apart by now. This pre-storm silence was drying my blood to dust.
Ding!
"Gah!"
The cheery system alert shattered the quiet—I nearly pulled the trigger. Clutching my pounding heart, threatening to crack my ribs, I glared at the translucent blue holographic window floating in the air.
A major change has been detected in the external environment.
'Legal Absolute Safe Zone' established by Imperial authority.
Goal achieved: Permanent withdrawal of Imperial forces around the bunker and access prohibition confirmed.
"...What? Absolute safe zone? Troops withdrawn?"
My fatigue-fried brain stuttered, struggling to process the system text. I'd stripped the Imperial Knight Captain down to his panties and chased him off, yet instead of hunting me, they'd pulled their forces? I shot up, kicking over the camp chair, and bolted to the console table in the corner serving as my monitor room. I pulled up the CCTV feed of the outer sewer passage.
Crackle, static.
As the noise cleared and the black-and-white image sharpened, I couldn't believe my eyes.
"What... the hell is all that?"
The sewer passage on screen was a circus. No armed knights coming to smash me—instead, dozens of robed old geezers, the empire's top archmages and chief priests from the palace, sweating buckets like construction grunts.
"Bring more mana stones! Seal every millimeter of Zone 17's cracks! If the Demon King's miasma leaks out, the empire's done for!"
Their voices, carried over the CCTV mic, dripped with raw terror and desperation. They weren't casting attack spells at my bunker entrance. No—they were erecting a massive marble barrier outside the iron door, slathering it with millions of gold worth of premium mana stones, building a blind multi-layered containment barrier. Not trying to drag me out, but slamming the lid shut, layer after layer, and pouring concrete to seal me in perfect isolation.
What? Demon King? Don't tell me... they think it's me?
Staring blankly at the screen, a perfect logical circuit finally sparked in my sluggish head, snapping the puzzle together.
Hold up. Captain Kellun, that old prick. No way he'd report getting beanbagged and pantless to the Emperor straight—his head would've rolled for incompetence. Did he... lie? Package my shotgun and flashbangs as demon or Demon King powers?
The romance fantasy elite always defaulted to defense against the unknown. And this world had that damn World's Compulsion Force. Kellun's desperate bullshit, combined with the pure physics of mana-less flashbangs, had accidentally snowballed into the most plausible narrative in this worldview. Even the System bought this ridiculous misunderstanding as legit story progression.
"Puhaha...! Kehahaha... HAHAHAHA!"
Leaning against the bunker's cold wall, I clutched my gut and laughed like a maniac. Explosive euphoria and relief swept through me, tears pricking my eyes. No bullets fired. No risk of the shop freezing. The Emperor himself was looting the treasury, exploiting the realm's best mages day and night to install the ultimate free impenetrable shield right in my front yard!
As the tension melted, ravenous hunger hit like a truck. I cracked open the M870's chamber, dumped the loaded beanbag rounds into my pocket. Then I tore into the top combat rations box in the corner, yanking out a silver can that gleamed: Spam, the ultimate preserved soul food for the modern apocalypser.
No fire, no cooking—just pure instinct. I yanked the ring.
Pop—hiss!
With a satisfying friction, the can popped open, revealing a pink meat lump swimming in congealed yellow fat. Salty, greasy aroma wafted into the cold air. No fork needed—I plunged my hand in, scooped a chunk, and shoved it straight into my mouth.
Munch, crunch...
Salty. Insanely salty and greasy. The sodium bomb and chemical seasonings slammed my tongue. To me right then, this fatty sodium brick was the warmest proof I was alive.
"Hngh... Fucking delicious, shit."
The Spam grease lubricated my parched guts as it slid down. Devouring the rest like a beast, lost in primal catharsis—
"...Eek!"
A sharp shriek from behind. Mouth smeared with yellow pork fat, I turned slowly. Ayla Erzen, the duke's daughter I'd dosed with modern sleeping pills, had risen from her corpse-like slumber, looking refreshed as hell.
Our eyes met—her body jolted. Her red eyes dilated in horror.
I could picture how I looked to her. Dim, chilly basement. Bloodshot-eyed, hollow-faced stranger ripping into fresh, bloody, glistening mystery flesh bare-handed, grinning creepily.
"Th-this place... truly the Demon King's lair...? It's not a dream..."
Ayla shuddered back, trembling violently. Extreme fear breeds the worst delusions. She was dead certain I was a monster chowing on human flesh.
"St-stay back! Come near and I'll bite my tongue and die! Y-you vile Demon King...!"
Clutching her dress, she shrieked defiantly. I worked my jaw, slowly chewing and swallowing the lingering salty Spam, then set the can down and wiped my mouth.
"Demon King my ass. Sleep well, Lady Ayla?"
"D-don't come closer!"
Ignoring her flailing, I rapidly calculated in my head. Couldn't let this haughty, clueless noble miss go. With the Emperor concreting the entrance, no way out anyway—and ditching a VIP client who'd handed over precious 50,000 SP from her Heart Mana Stone? No chance.
The bunker was huge, maintenance and grunt work piled sky-high. Hydroponic farm pipes to connect, emergency rations to inventory, mags to reload with bullets.
This kind of labor...
I eyed her up and down with cool, purely capitalistic appraisal. Mistaking it for the Demon King's gaze, Ayla gulped and curled up.
"You're up, so time to earn your keep."
My cold voice echoed chillingly off the bunker's steel walls. In my mind, the Indefinite Compulsory Labor Contract for the duke's daughter's delicate hands printed out in perfect form. One can of Spam sodium had masterfully awakened the black-hearted boss instinct in my veins.
