The Calm Before the Storm
The Forest of Flowers was a crime thriller investigation drama. Though it seemed like a jumble of various elements, it was a series that brought together genres perfectly suited for summer viewing.
Thinking about it now, it felt a little strange. Out of all the possible titles, why choose Forest of Flowers? It wasn't even frightening. For a crime thriller to suddenly adopt such a lyrical, poetic name was unexpected.
Writer Ko A-rin always decided on a central theme before writing her scripts. A concept that would run through the entire work. For this drama, that theme was humanity.
Jin Da-yeon, a detective born into a happy family with nothing but a happy life ahead of her. One day, her entire family is murdered. If the case had shaken the whole country, it might have felt less unfair. Instead, it became just another incident—special enough for a news segment, yet commonplace enough to appear every day.
Had she tried to draw public attention to it? No. Jin Da-yeon did not trust the Korean judicial system. So she sharpened herself. She trained in MMA. She built an impressive record to earn her spot on the Violent Crimes Unit One.
Ten years remained before the statute of limitations expired. Jin Da-yeon worked relentlessly to keep that clock from running out.
But this drama was not a simple tale of revenge. To express its theme of humanity, the protagonist had to confront the situation in the cruelest possible way and undergo a profound change. And right now, that moment had arrived.
"Cue!"
A brief silence settled over the set. Jin Da-yeon and Woo Dan-wol faced each other. The man who had introduced himself as a rookie actor had vanished. In his place stood an innocent mountain lodge owner confronting Jin Da-yeon. He had slipped into one of his signature masks. Naturally, Jin Da-yeon had no way of knowing he was a psychopath.
"I want to pay."
"It's my goodwill. Please, just accept it."
"No, this place..."
Jin Da-yeon's expression grew complicated. Her mind screamed that she needed to leave immediately, yet she could not let it show completely. After all, the criminals were watching her.
She, too, had to wear a mask. She needed to create an excuse for a private conversation, becoming someone uncomfortable simply accepting solicitation or kindness.
Perhaps her awkward earnestness had worked. Good news came from Kang Min-hyeok's lips.
"There's no helping it. We're usually reservation-only, but... since this is a special case, I'll accept."
"Thank you."
She bowed her head deeply, hiding her face. Staring at the floor, she expressed her gratitude as thoroughly as she could.
"Cut!"
"Whoa..."
"That's intense."
It had been a short scene, yet it felt endlessly long. Proof that everyone had been completely absorbed by the actors' performances. Even the minor actors and staff were exhaling as if they'd been holding their breath the entire time.
When you thought about it, not much had actually happened on the surface. Only Jin Da-yeon's mind was complicated. The conversation itself was simply about wanting to pay because accepting the favor felt burdensome.
Yet in the footage, a distinctly uncomfortable atmosphere lingered. Director Seo Yeon-soo, reviewing the take, smiled. The exact feeling she had imagined had been perfectly realized.
The calm before the storm. The emotion she had been pursuing was captured with absolute precision.
"Okay!"
She gave the okay with refreshing decisiveness. A scene like this could only exist because it was their first meeting. The first time their rhythms aligned. All the tension, atmosphere, and awkwardness inherent in that moment had risen to the surface naturally.
After that came the shots of climbing the stairs, entering the room, and other light action sequences. Once those were complete, it was time for the next crucial scene.
The moment the two of them entered the room with the laptop. The first true private confrontation.
It was the shift from a simple lodge owner and guest to a detective who knew the secret facing an ordinary civilian.
"Standby... cue!"
Woo Dan-wol's immersion speed was on another level. In an instant he had fully become the character, and Han Da-sol, distracted by watching him, missed her timing. The result was an NG.
"Ah, um. I'm sorry."
"It's fine. Really, it's okay."
Han Da-sol slowly opened her eyes. She caught her breath and stared at the monstrous rookie before her. Even before the cue, his expression had burned with eagerness to begin acting.
How could she possibly get angry at that? She had been living the life of an actress for over six years. The emotions stirring in her chest. The sense of inferiority.
She had been overpowered by the sheer spirit of an actor who had only just begun taking his first steps. The fact alone made her unable to forgive herself. She felt ashamed for even experiencing such a feeling.
So she clenched her jaw harder. Negative emotions tried to drag her down by the ankles, but Han Da-sol was not someone who fell easily. Instead, she would use them as fuel to soar even higher.
"Cue!"
The actress. Han Da-sol's wings began to beat.
"How much would it be?"
"Originally it's three hundred thousand won per night, but..."
Kang Min-hyeok scratched his cheek as if troubled. While he already knew the reason, Jin Da-yeon could only look at him with puzzled eyes.
Sometimes actions moved faster than words. He immediately grabbed the TV remote and turned it on. It happened to be tuned to a news channel, so a breaking report flowed out.
A cold wave special bulletin filled the room. It announced that the first heavy snowfall in ten years had isolated parts of the rural regions.
Jin Da-yeon's expression darkened gradually. Kang Min-hyeok nodded in understanding.
"This place is somewhat well-known, but..."
"......"
The atmosphere grew heavier. The tension in their expressions rose. Though it was only a brief silence, his unspoken question was clear: This lodge is indeed famous. Even though it's in the countryside, people visit frequently. It's strictly reservation-only, so how exactly did you end up here?
Jin Da-yeon's gaze wavered. How should she answer? In the end, she chose to charge forward.
"I am..."
A twitch. Kang Min-hyeok—no, Woo Dan-wol's spirit transmitted to her in full force. The line halted for a moment. The staff looked on with puzzled expressions. The dialogue should have continued without pause.
But Han Da-sol deliberately took a beat. If she let herself be devoured by this newcomer, she would kick her blankets in regret for the rest of her life. Her fierce determination flowed through her performance.
"I'm a detective."
Within that short phrase, countless emotions flickered across her face. Her pupils trembled with momentary panic. The quiver of her lips conveyed regret. Yet the way she firmly pressed them together and steadied her slightly shaking eyes showed her effort to regain control.
Was it coincidence? Could it really be coincidence? Her instincts screamed at her. She had studied and built achievements as a detective, but what had truly shaped her was intuition.
Jin Da-yeon realized her mistake instantly but corrected her expression. Everyone gathered here was a criminal. There was no guarantee the lodge owner was truly a civilian. No montage had come to mind, but she had to consider the possibility of an accomplice.
"D-Detective... why..."
She cheered inwardly. Fortunately. Truly, fortunately. He was a civilian.
His awkward, frightened expression was exactly what she had seen when interviewing ordinary people.
A criminal facing a detective could never wear such an expression.
Conversely, a psychopath had to perfectly imitate an ordinary person. Only then could they blend into society.
Therefore, the criminal Kang Min-hyeok had flawlessly produced the face of an 'ordinary person.'
A promising detective who had never made a single mistake. Jin Da-yeon's first error—and the most fatal one—had burst forth at precisely this moment.
"Cut!"
Writer Ko A-rin was startled. Director Seo Yeon-soo was smiling. She knew the director's style well.
On set, the woman was like a cold-hearted captain. A faint smile from her meant an outstanding performance. She kept such a straight face that rumors circulated: if Director Seo ever smiled brightly, the drama would be guaranteed to sweep the awards ceremonies.
Director Seo Yeon-soo was someone who genuinely loved her work. That was why she had endured and survived in this industry.
Even she had never looked this excited before. As she reviewed the footage, her face was filled with intense focus. The expression of a chef who had discovered the perfect ingredients.
It was an apt comparison. The role of director involved many responsibilities, but at its core it meant editing and compressing long footage into the finest possible result.
"Dan-wol. Da-sol."
"Yes."
"Could you both come here?"
Director Seo Yeon-soo called the actors over. Although there had been an ad-lib—an action that deviated from the script—it was a scene that required discussion with the performers.
"Looking at this here..."
To summarize her feedback, the actors had already analyzed their roles to near perfection. That was how they had created such a brilliant scene.
But Director Seo Yeon-soo decided to be greedy. It was a common trait among talented, proud people. When a moment held the potential for something even more spectacular, they demanded it without hesitation.
"Da-sol, that facial expression was excellent. Let's keep the current version instead of the original line..."
"Yes. I understand."
Normally, a significant wall existed between directors and actors. In a way, it was only natural. They were different people with different perspectives. Each carried their own burdens.
Director Seo Yeon-soo felt sincere gratitude for the current situation.
"Let's go again! Standby, cue!"
Han Da-sol was a true professional. Woo Dan-wol was displaying acting prowess that made his rookie status hard to believe. It was no wonder the lead actress had been overwhelmed and made a mistake. The brief worry proved unfounded.
"Cut! Cut! Okay!!"
Beyond a simple clash of presence, they were creating true synergy. She wanted to applaud the actors for delivering such a magnificent scene.
"With the actors performing like this, I can't possibly slack off."
The words slipped from Director Seo Yeon-soo's lips in a quiet mutter, but her sincerity was absolute. Writer Ko A-rin stayed glued to her side as they reviewed the filmed footage together.
"If it's like this..."
A soft chuckle escaped her. The raw footage, without any editing or effects, was already breathing with life. If that was the case, how brilliantly would the refined final product shine?
It was only the first day of filming. Far too early to have expectations.
"But how can I not look forward to it?"
However. Seeing the actors pour their entire beings into every moment, it was impossible not to feel anticipation.
