Chapter 59 This Job is Hard
“Audel Avarus… she has the same surname as Viola, a relative of hers?”
Royalty wasn't necessarily a single line of descent.
Just look at the emperors of the Celestial Empire; the number of sons and daughters they had was enough to form several soccer teams.
Li Chengxi thought this person was like the golden-haired, twin-drilled Wendy, someone who had come to seek refuge with Viola.
But when he opened Audel’s character card, Li Chengxi realized the situation was not what he had imagined.
In the level column for Audel, it read ‘LV: 45’, the same level as the White Dragon.
The titles column was also filled with a long string of them, such as ‘Daughter of Grand Duke Weiss’, ‘The Kingdom’s Youngest High-ranking Mage’, ‘Genius of Magic Technology’, ‘First-place Winner of the Omniscience Award’, and a whole bunch of other impressive-sounding titles.
Below, in the skill bar, the magic section was exceptionally long; he had to scroll with his mouse wheel for more than ten seconds to reach the bottom.
Furthermore, Li Chengxi saw that her status bar had permanent buffs like ‘Seeker of Knowledge’, ‘Extremely High Magic Recovery Speed’, and ‘Halves Time Needed to Learn New Magic’.
One look and you could tell she was no ordinary person.
Even among hero units, she would be considered the elite of the elite.
Her stats were just too over the top.
Besides, one could tell from her artwork that she was no commoner.
She carried a wooden staff inlaid with gemstones in her hand, wore a grey robe, and even had a sword hanging from her waist.
Although she was missing a wizard's hat, this look was already very close to Gandalf.
In contrast, Viola’s few court mages all cast spells with their bare hands, and their robes looked gaudy and not the least bit magical.
Looking at her age, however, it said 23, only two years younger than Li Chengxi.
He really couldn't tell she was 23 from the artwork; Li Chengxi had initially thought she was only fourteen or fifteen.
Although he was a bit curious as to how this overpowered female protagonist had appeared in the Leon Territory, the sensor doorbell chimed just then.
A customer had arrived at the convenience store, so Li Chengxi had to avert his gaze from the dialogue box on the screen.
“Boss, do you have chargers here? Preferably one where the data cable can be detached.”
“Yes, it’s right behind you. That’s right, at the very back of that shelf.”
The two men who entered were carrying backpacks, looking like programmers on their way to work.
The customers who came to Li Chengxi's convenience store were basically all residents from the nearby complexes.
Although it was unlikely he knew all of them, he was at least a familiar face to most.
But these two were complete strangers, looking as if they were just passing by and remembered they needed to buy something.
One of them walked towards the shelf Li Chengxi had pointed to and began picking out a data cable there, while the other, perhaps wanting to buy something else, wandered between the various shelves.
“Need anything? I can tell you where it is.”
“It’s fine, I’m just looking.”
Since he said so, Li Chengxi couldn't very well keep asking.
He just had to keep an eye on the surveillance monitor next to the cash register; he didn't quite trust these unfamiliar strangers.
Not long after, only about four or five minutes, the two came to the counter with their items to pay.
“Boss, we heard a big case happened around here recently.”
“It was indeed quite a commotion, but the police have already taken the people away.”
An armed robbery at the nearby bank was big enough to make the provincial news.
It was a good thing no one was killed, or it might have even made the central news station.
However, perhaps because Li Chengxi’s actions weren't suitable for wide publicity, his name did not appear in the news.
He was just fine with not having such empty fame anyway.
It would be annoying enough if a bunch of people rushed into his convenience store, not buying anything and just asking him this and that.
After a brief chat, the two paid and left the convenience store, seeming like just an ordinary transaction.
However, as the two were leaving, they happened to come face to face with Lei Lei, who was just entering.
Lei Lei’s heart skipped a beat when she saw them, but she quickly feigned a startled expression and stepped aside.
Only after the two had left did Lei Lei enter the store.
“Brother Li, I’m here again. I watched a short video about making tofu this morning and it made me crave some jelly.”
Like an ordinary encounter, the two men didn't pay too much attention to Lei Lei, instead pretending to chat idly as they gradually moved away.
When they reached the street corner, one of them said:
“Brother Ren, the instrument didn't detect any signal.”
The man called Brother Ren stuffed the charger into his backpack and then lit a cigarette for himself.
“I can’t see anything wrong with this Li Chengxi for now, either. He doesn't seem like one of us.”
“But that Lei Lei is always going to see him…”
“That doesn’t prove anything. Maybe she has a crush on that kid. That’s not uncommon in our circle.”
After taking a couple of puffs, Brother Ren took out a portable ashtray and extinguished the cigarette butt.
“For now, let’s just continue surveillance. I don't think he poses any danger. Dispatching a minimum level of surveillance personnel should be enough.”
This Brother Ren was an expert from the provincial level.
If he said there was no danger, then it was most likely true.
It was like a doctor diagnosing a patient.
With the same diagnostic equipment, a novice doctor might look for a long time and still be unsure, while an expert could tell what was going on with a single glance.
It was purely a gap in experience.
“We heard back from Hubei. Lei Lei is from Jingzhou. They were the ones who handled her identity information. Although not notifying our province in advance was a procedural mistake, we don't need to pay too much attention to Lei Lei's case. She knows her limits.”
Brother Ren tapped his temples and said:
“What’s more troublesome is the matter of the master key. This case has already been handed over to the province. You don’t need to get involved.”
“It’s just a key, why is the province taking it so seriously?”
“It’s not just a master key. It's connected to other cases. If you're curious, you can go check the files in the database, but I wouldn't really recommend it. It's easy to give others leverage against you, which isn't good for your career advancement.”
“It’s that big of a deal?”
“Mhm, I even think the province will hand it over to the head office soon. In any case, your city-level units don't need to get involved.”
He glanced at his watch.
“I have to take the high-speed rail back soon. I have some things to deal with on my end too.”
“Do you need our help?”
“Probably not, but when I do, I will definitely ask without hesitation. I have a real handful over there who’s always causing trouble. It’s a tough job.”
Both men subconsciously rubbed their scalps, deeply regretting that the tops of their heads were getting cooler and cooler, making them look more and more like programmers.
Just then, a black SUV drove over and stopped in front of them.
Brother Ren was surprised to see the person who rolled down the window.
“Chen Dong? What are you doing here?”
“Brother Ren, something big has happened. An unknown giant rock was discovered in the city outskirts. It's emitting energy fluctuations of unknown properties and has caused a huge panic.”
“And I was thinking of staying in the provincial capital for a few days… Alright then, let’s talk about the details on the way.”
Brother Ren opened the car door and got in, but still feeling a little uneasy, he lowered the window to give instructions:
“Don't make your contact with Li Chengxi too obvious. It’s best to continue with tracking and surveillance. If it turns out he’s really not involved, we would have dragged an innocent civilian into this.”
“Don’t worry, Brother Ren, we can handle a small matter like this.”
“Mmm, I'm leaving it to you.”
Then the SUV started up and quickly disappeared at the end of the road…
