Chapter 49: Extremely Lucky
“Think twice before you act next time. You’d better never make the same mistake again.”
“Yes, yes, sorry for the trouble to the police officers. I’ll definitely correct myself in the future.”
Judging from Li Chengxi’s words as he walked out of the Public Security Bureau, one might think he’d done something big.
But in reality, the police had just praised him moments ago.
SWAT officers had stormed into the bank.
The robbers were either arrested or rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment—and likely, would be taken straight to the crematorium afterward.
During the statement-taking process, the police first gave Li Chengxi a huge compliment, praising his courage in confronting criminals and his sense of responsibility in protecting others.
They said this was the kind of spirit young people these days should have.
Their praise made Li Chengxi a bit embarrassed.
But then, the tone changed.
The next moment, the police began to lecture him...
It was admirable that he ran up to tackle the robbers, sure.
But had he considered what would’ve happened if he were shot? And even if he wasn’t hit, what if a stray bullet struck one of the hostages?
Of course, the police weren’t exactly praising him in one sentence and scolding him in the next.
Their tone was up and down, one moment elevated, the next serious—almost like a symphony in movements, rising and falling like an orchestral performance.
Li Chengxi didn’t argue.
The police were right.
He had indeed acted rashly and without enough thought.
Credit where it’s due, but rebuke where it's due as well.
The police had a point, and Li Chengxi accepted it with humility.
That said, rash as it may have been, Li Chengxi didn’t regret it.
If the same situation played out again, he figured he might still charge in all the same.
He thought to himself: If you want to steal money, fine, just do it and go.
Don’t make things worse than they already are.
Altogether, the loose cash in his bag didn’t even add up to ten thousand yuan.
Risking his life over that kind of money just wasn’t worth it.
If it had been an adult with a gun to their head, Li Chengxi likely wouldn’t have said a word.
He’d just pretend he didn’t see anything.
But pointing a gun at a child? That’s taking it too far.
So even if given another chance, he was pretty sure he’d make the same call.
After bidding farewell to the police, Li Chengxi stepped out of the Public Security Bureau.
A light breeze brushed across his head as he made his way to the street, and the back of his head still felt a little cold.
That lingering fear…
He looked around in search of a taxi.
At that moment, Lei Lei peeked out from behind the stone lion statue at the gate of the station.
Because Li Chengxi had directly physically clashed with a robber and had to help identify stolen items and aid in recovery, his release had been delayed a bit.
Lei Lei, on the other hand, hadn’t had anything stolen—she only carried one bank card.
She’d just stood on the sidelines watching the whole time.
After taking her statement, the police let her go earlier than Li Chengxi.
Watching Li Chengxi walk a bit unsteadily from residual fear, Lei Lei thought to herself, You’re really playing it up.
That acting’s almost on par with my own.
Though she still didn’t know exactly what method Li Chengxi had used, the fact that not a single bullet had hit him was clearly not normal.
This only made her more convinced—this guy Li Chengxi definitely had something suspicious going on.
Still, such a few petty robbers weren’t enough to truly bring out his real abilities.
To be honest, Lei Lei could also easily handle a few small robbers without even revealing a hint of her power, even if they were all armed.
So Lei Lei felt she was on the right track.
Now was the time to strike while the iron was hot.
That’s why she’d been crouching at the gate of the Public Security Bureau—waiting for Li Chengxi to come out.
“Convenience Store Big Brother!”
Seeing Li Chengxi walking farther away, Lei Lei quickly ran a few steps to catch up to him.
From afar, it really looked like she’d just come out of the station as well.
“Lei Lei? Didn’t you leave earlier?”
Li Chengxi actually noticed her—her “casual encounter” plan failed.
Oh well, no big deal.
Lei Lei tugged at the corner of Li Chengxi’s shirt and, bashfully, said, “I’m a little scared to go home alone. I want to head back with someone I know…”
Li Chengxi didn’t think there was anything odd about that.
A seventeen- or eighteen-year-old girl who just went through something like that would naturally be scared.
“Well, that works out. Let’s go together.”
After all, a taxi ride cost the same for one or two people.
Feeling that her acting had worked and her plan had gone smoothly, Lei Lei softly said:
“Convenience Store Big Brother, what’s your name?”
“My name is Li Chengxi.”
“How did you know my name?”
“Xue Wenshu told me… he’s in the same cram school as you.”
“Oh, no wonder. By the way, Big Brother Li, my name is Lei Lei, not Leilei.”
“Got it, Leilei.”
“…”

The robbers had been caught and taken to the hospital; the matter was basically handled.
However, that small bank branch on the shopping street couldn’t reopen right away.
Not to mention, the police still needed to collect evidence, so a cordon had been put up around the bank to keep out the gathering crowd of onlookers.
Something this significant drew plenty of gawkers.
And since the bank’s shutter was still down and a curtain had been draped over the breached entry point, no one could see what had happened inside.
And so, the rumors began.
Some claimed people had surely died inside and that the storefront was now tainted with bad luck.
Some said the interior was covered in blood and brains.
Others went even further, saying it looked like Khorne himself from Warhammer had paid a visit.
In short, rumors ran wild.
Most of the older folks in the neighborhood had nothing better to do and loved spreading gossip.
Just then, a man in his thirties climbed over the cordon with two others.
A community auxiliary police officer had just raised his voice to stop them when the man flashed a red leather ID and silenced him.
The trio then walked into the bank.
The surrounding crowd saw this and began stirring even more.
See! Plainclothes Police!
It’s clearly a major case!
Only the serious crimes division goes around in plainclothes!
Inside the bank, some people were taking photos, others lugging around odd-looking equipment that resembled land mine detectors, sweeping them across the scene, but who knew what they were scanning for.
Everyone collecting evidence wore police uniforms—but they weren’t police.
“Brother Ren.”
A man who had been taking photos quickly greeted the man who had just walked in.
The one called Brother Ren nodded and asked:
“I came over as soon as I got the message from the province. What’s the situation?”
“Fortunately, only one of our surveillance agents was lightly injured. All the civilians are safe, and it hasn’t blown up into a public scandal. The police can handle the rest.”
Brother Ren let out a quiet sigh of relief.
As long as the situation didn’t blow out of proportion, everything could be managed.
“Have you confirmed the profile of the surveillance target?”
“Yes.”
The man opened a file folder and reported:
“Li Chengxi, male, Han ethnicity, 26 years old. After graduating college, he inherited the family business and opened a convenience store on this street. No criminal record, clean for three generations. Twenty-three days ago, we picked up a faint spatial shift signal. Technicians theorized it might be a false alarm, but per protocol, we assigned an agent to monitor Li Chengxi and his store. Ten days ago, we detected another spatial signal, and this time it was confirmed to not be a false reading. That’s when we officially filed for surveillance.”
“Another one running a convenience store, huh…”
“Brother Ren?”
“It’s nothing. Keep going. Was there anything besides the spatial signal?”
The man pointed at bullet holes on the ground:
Ren, who had just started unwrapping a stick of gum, froze momentarily and said, “Yes, the police investigation found the guns were converted from props. The bullets likely came from previously stashed civilian stockpiles. The police are still chasing down their origin.”
“Hard to believe someone could be this lucky.”
“We found it hard to believe too. But based on eyewitness accounts, there’s nothing unusual about Li Chengxi—except for his absurd luck.”
“Keep monitoring his case. What about the other person?”
“That’s… we’re still not sure.”
The man continued reading:
“Lei Lei, female, Han ethnicity. Her file says she’s seventeen, but her real age is unknown. Currently enrolled at City No. 3 High School. All her identity records are fabricated. No genuine schooling records prior to high school. We’ve found nothing more detailed so far.”
“How did these two get tangled up together?”
“From our observations, Li Chengxi seems completely unaware of Lei Lei’s background. According to our tracking, Lei Lei intentionally approached him. What connection the two share is still unclear.”
“To unravel this, we’ll have to investigate her identity further…”
Brother Ren pondered:
“Call the Hubei branch later. My guess is this Lei Lei is from their side.”
“Hubei? Okay, I’ll make the call when I get back.”
Brother Ren cracked his neck:
“Other than this, what else made you urgently call me over?”
Something like this clearly didn’t warrant Ren’s personal appearance.
There had to be something more pressing.
The man took out an evidence bag.
Inside was a very ordinary-looking brass key.
“This is the key the robbers used to open the bank’s internal vault.”
Then, they had someone fetch a U-lock from a bicycle.
Wearing gloves, they brought the brass key close to the lock.
As it approached the keyhole, everyone could clearly see—the plain one-slotted brass flat key morphed, melted, and reshaped into a cross key.
“We’re temporarily classifying this as a Master Key. Its origin is currently unknown.”
“…Understood. I’ll coordinate with the police regarding the key.”
Although it was serious, the situation hadn’t escalated entirely beyond control.
It was still manageable.
Brother Ren let out another long breath and rubbed his increasingly shiny scalp.
In this line of work, avoiding hair loss really is impossible…
