Chapter 27: Dropped Equipment
Bubble after bubble of various colors were popped one by one, and sometimes it even triggered chain reactions that caused a whole bunch of them to drop all at once.
It only took a few minutes before Li Chengxi saw a "you win" notice pop up on the screen.
"That wasn’t hard at all."
It felt like it was just a simple version of Bubble Shooter.
This little minigame they'd added was bland and pointless.
Just then, the scene shifted again.
Li Chengxi figured he’d be seeing Springlight Woodland and a group of chibi-style tree elves.
But after the screen dimmed, it didn’t light back up right away.
Instead, purplish-black smoke filled the entire screen.
“Don’t tell me my computer can’t handle it anymore?”
It was a reasonable worry—it had been over ten years since he bought this machine.
Just as Li Chengxi was about to shut it down and restart, the purple-black smoke on the screen grew thicker and more dense, practically clogging up the entire display.
Then, a pale female face emerged from the mist, looking absolutely furious.
Words popped up in the dialogue box below: “Who is it?! Who dares defy the power of pestilence?!”
Oh ho, this must be the Plague Goddess herself.
Li Chengxi had just dismantled the divine power she’d left behind in the Springlight Woodland.
Basically, he ripped out a foothold she had just gained, so naturally she was enraged.
“But no voice lines? Just reading mushy text isn’t very threatening.”
More text appeared in the dialogue box:
"I’ll find you! I’ll tear your temple apart and destroy your faith! You can’t escape!"
It looped between pretty much those few threats again and again.
Li Chengxi didn’t see any new lines, so he started getting bored.
So he reached toward the screen, extended a finger, and when his hand passed through it, he reversed his wrist and gave her a solid backhand slap.
The pale-faced Plague Goddess froze for a moment, then blew up in rage.
"You rude—!"
—*smack!*
"You will pay for that!"
—*smack!*
"I will find you—!"
—*smack!*
"Enough! I am a god! How dare you treat me like this!"
Li Chengxi hesitated for a split second.
—*smack!*
Turns out it really was just a split second.
After a few stinging slaps, the pale face actually started to flush with a bit of red.
No telling if it was from the slapping or pure rage.
Then her face let out a ghost-movie-style wail, high-pitched and screeching, before vanishing back into the mist.
The purple-black fog spun in a whirlpool shape and finally vanished without a trace.
Maybe she actually cried from getting slapped...
Li Chengxi couldn’t help mumbling:
"Hmm, definitely not a player."
If it were a real player, they’d have jumped into using modern internet lingo by now.
No way their trash talk vocabulary would be this limited.
After the Plague Goddess disappeared, the screen lit up again, now properly showing the pixel-style Springlight Woodland.
The previously purplish-black pondwater was now completely clear, shimmering with tiny glowing specks—it even looked like it could shine.
Guess this counted as the purification being complete.
The tree elves, who had been hiding off to the side a moment ago, now gathered near the pond, surprised and curious.
Dialogue boxes above their heads blinked with things like "Unbelievable," "Amazing," and "I can't believe it."
Someone crouched down, trying to scoop up some water by hand to taste it.
Li Chengxi quickly grabbed his headset.
Water treated with purification tablets couldn't be drunk immediately.
It needed to settle for two days, or else it was still toxic to humans.
The Druid who always stayed with the pigeon immediately received Li Chengxi’s warning and hurried to stop his tribe from drinking the water.
Based on the dialogue boxes, it seemed the tree elves had stored dewwater to get by for the next two days, so it wouldn’t be a problem.
And when Li Chengxi took off the headset, he was surprised to see that the Faith Points counter on the left side of the screen had suddenly shot up.
Originally he had less than a hundred Faith Points.
Now, it had surged to over six hundred.
It had been mentioned before—daily growth rate for Faith Points depended on the number of followers, their devotion, and whether or not they prayed.
But this sudden spike couldn’t have come from a sudden increase in followers.
The nearby tree elves hadn’t been converted into followers.
So, there could only be one explanation left—the Plague Goddess.
The question now was whether the Faith Points came from purifying and absorbing the divine power she left behind, or because Li Chengxi had beat the crap out of her and she “dropped loot.”
Either way, if something like this happens again, he’d definitely have to give it a shot.
Faith Points were the most important attribute in this game.
Li Chengxi needed to spend them whenever he wanted to directly interfere with in-game events, so the more the better.
Li Chengxi stretched and let out a small yawn to ease up.
The situation with the tree elves was handled.
He still needed to inform Viola later, but right now his stomach growled—it was time to boil water and have some instant noodles to finally fix his delayed lunch.
Just as he was about to close the laptop, he spotted a female tree elf with a bow kneeling before the altar, holding something up in her hands.
Zooming in a bit, a “post-battle rewards” window popped up at the center of the screen.
Inside the clickable frame lay a piece of what looked like white wood.
It instantly reminded Li Chengxi of the time on the first day when he’d yanked the Radiance Ring out of the screen using a sausage, the flash of light from that ring still fresh in memory.
That ring was still sealed tight in a plastic box, wrapped completely with duct tape.
But now Li Chengxi was way more experienced.
He casually right-clicked it with the mouse to view the detailed attributes.
Name: Amulet of Vitality
Type: Rare Item
Grade: Perfect-level Magical Artifact
Effect: Grants three uses of 'Major Heal', one use of 'Greater Restoration', and one use of 'Rejuvenation' per day.
Increases wearer’s maximum HP and stamina when worn.
Description: An extremely rare amulet, the proudest creation of the Grand Druid of Springlight Woodland from two hundred years ago. It is the woodland’s most treasured artifact, only taken from its hidden hollow in times of dire crisis.
This thing felt a lot safer than the Radiance Ring.
Li Chengxi reached into the reward window.
His fingertips touched the smooth wooden surface, and he casually pulled the amulet out from the screen.
It seemed to be made of white oak.
He leaned in for a sniff—it had a refreshing earthy scent that sent an instant jolt through his whole body.
Both sides of the wooden tag were carved with tree-like symbols, painted with what looked like natural indigo dye.
It looked just like a finely crafted piece of wooden art.
More importantly, just holding it made Li Chengxi feel relief from the aches and stiffness caused by sitting too long.
Even his mind seemed sharper.
"Nice, real nice. This is a great find."
Li Chengxi grabbed a cheap pendant from under the counter, ran a red cord through the loop at the top of the wood tag, and hung it around his neck like a necklace.
The moment the tag touched his skin, a warm wave spread throughout his entire body, like a hot bath after a long, tiring day.
All his fatigue melted away.
What a totally unexpected bonus.
Li Chengxi found himself growing more and more fond of the tree elves.
At that moment on the screen, the tree elves had begun to dance and sing around the altar, celebrating the resolution of their greatest threat.
For the first time, Li Chengxi found himself annoyed at the game's chibi pixel art style.
Because not only were the tree elves all stunners—every single one of them—but most of them were barely dressed...
