Chapter 218: Cyclops Zombie (Part 2)
As the saying goes, if you don't listen to your elders, you'll suffer right before your eyes.
It's really true.
Qian Sen had been with Section Nine for over a decade.
If he said it was dangerous to go up the mountain, then it was truly dangerous.
Unable to wait, Li Chengxi ran up the mountain, clinging to a sliver of hope.
He thought he would just search briefly at the foot of the mountain; what if he happened upon the lost Xue Wenshu and the others?
He also figured that for something as huge as the Cyclops Zombie, he should be able to spot it from a great distance away, and all he'd have to do then was run.
However, reality proved Qian Sen right.
Li Chengxi truly should not have come up here.
He had never imagined that the damn Cyclops Zombie could turn invisible, and he had completely misjudged just how strong the creature was.
Leaves drizzled down like raindrops.
Li Chengxi didn't even have time to brush the leaves from his head.
He watched, wide-eyed, as the thrown tree trunk knocked over several large trees.
He shot up in a single bound and immediately took off running.
It was unknown whether the Cyclops Zombie was chasing a living creature or because Li Chengxi had shone a flashlight in its eye earlier, but it took great strides and came chasing after him.
The thudding footsteps behind him, each one seeming to land on the very tip of his heart, shook him so much he could feel his heart palpitate.
His rapid breathing was also making him see stars.
What was more terrifying was that the dreadful footsteps were closing in at an astonishing speed; it felt as if they were almost right behind him.
The Cyclops Zombie stood six meters tall.
To it, most trees on the mountain were no different from saplings, and the bushes blocking Li Chengxi's path were like weeds that it simply stepped over.
Li Chengxi had been quite confident in his running ability.
After all, his physical foundation was solid, he had the Ring of Strength, and he had even drunk the potion that boosted his Movement Technique attribute.
Before coming up the mountain, he had figured that if he really encountered it, he could just run and should be able to escape.
However, the reality was that running was a joke; a single stride from the creature was faster than Li Chengxi's all-out sprint.
He felt as if he had run less than a hundred meters before that immense pressure was already at his back, accompanied by an intense sense of crisis.
Li Chengxi's entire body broke out in a cold sweat.
He braced his hand on a tree trunk and rolled to the side.
Immediately, a thunderous boom erupted beside him.
The Cyclops Zombie's greatsword slammed down hard right where Li Chengxi had been moments ago.
The terrible, brute force kicked up dirt and shredded vegetation that plastered his body and shoved him away.
Li Chengxi wrapped his arms around his head, protecting it from being knocked unconscious against something.
He used the momentum to keep rolling until he finally came to a stop against a rock.
When he looked up, he could see that single, terrifying eye shining in the darkness.
By now, Li Chengxi had realized that he could never escape on his own two legs, and he probably wouldn't be able to wait for Qian Sen and his team to arrive.
But the problem was, even if he wanted to fight back, how could he?
In the game, Li Chengxi was a Demon God with great divine power, but now he was just an ordinary person with a decent physique who only knew how to flail his arms in a fight.
Besides the two Rings of the Demon King on him...
At this thought, Li Chengxi suddenly recalled that he seemed to have more up his sleeve than just that.
The Cyclops Zombie raised its greatsword again, taking aim at Li Chengxi, who was leaning against the rock.
And just as the greatsword was about to come crashing down again, Li Chengxi shot up as if he had a spring under him, splayed his fingers toward the Cyclops Zombie's single eye, and shouted:
"Flash!"
A blinding ball of light exploded in front of the Cyclops Zombie.
Despite being a zombie, an undead creature, it let out a pained whimper at the brilliant flash and hastily covered the eye on its head with its massive hand.
The greatsword aimed at Li Chengxi began to swing wildly, shearing off the tops of several nearby trees.
The whooshing gusts of wind made Li Chengxi quickly duck his head to avoid being struck.
The Cyclops Zombie was highly sensitive to bright light, something he had discovered earlier with the flashlight.
On his finger, besides the Ring of the Demon King, Li Chengxi also wore a Ring of Flashing Light.
Aside from the first time he'd accidentally uttered the activation phrase and blinded himself, the ring had been nothing more than an ornament for a long time.
Li Chengxi had never used it since, wearing it purely for fun, and he never expected to actually put it to use this time.
The intense flash of light seemed to sear the Cyclops Zombie's nerves.
Li Chengxi watched it swing the greatsword wildly until the hilt finally slipped from its grasp.
The greatsword went flying into the mountain with a whoosh, followed by the sound of a distant, loud crash.
This move had been a clever trick, but hoping to defeat the Cyclops Zombie with just a flash of light was wishful thinking.
Li Chengxi planned to take this opportunity to run.
If it chased him again, he would just use the flash once more.
But he had barely taken two steps when he saw a gigantic fist coming down from above.
This forced Li Chengxi to once again use the signature move most familiar to players of Souls-like games: the dodge roll.
He was now experiencing what it meant to be crushed by an outstretched hand.
In the past, it was always him reaching into the screen, but now the situation was reversed.
The fist landed less than a meter in front of him.
If he had reacted even a fraction of a second slower, Li Chengxi would now be a Li Cheng-pancake.
However, taking into account his two previous dangerous encounters, it was clear that the more perilous the situation, the calmer and more decisive Li Chengxi became.
Watching the giant hand pull back, Li Chengxi suddenly recalled Audel once mentioning that undead creatures are very afraid of healing spells.
So, he gripped the Oak Amulet around his neck with one hand and leaped up, grabbing onto the Cyclops Zombie's arm with the other.
Don't even get him started on the texture.
It was as slick as a bar of soap, and even felt a little greasy.
The moment he touched it, he had an impulse to shake his hand free.
Fighting back his disgust, Li Chengxi shouted:
"Cure Serious Wounds!"
A layer of divine radiance erupted from Li Chengxi's fingers and enveloped the Cyclops Zombie's arm.
Li Chengxi's hand slipped, and he couldn't maintain his grip on the Cyclops Zombie's arm, causing him to fall into the bushes below.
He scrambled back to his feet and, without even stopping to see the effect, immediately started running again.
He could hear a deafening roar from behind him, like the anguished cry of a wounded beast.
From the sound of it, the spell must have worked, right?
But after the roar, Li Chengxi again heard the thudding of footsteps, which meant the creature was still hot on his heels.
Li Chengxi desperately wanted to use the Ring of Sight to check how far the search party's lights were, but with a Cyclops Zombie chasing him, such a move was suicidal.
A single moment of inattention, and he could trip over a bush or a rock.
The only good news was that Li Chengxi had succeeded in luring the Cyclops Zombie away from Xue Wenshu and the others.
As a big brother, he had done his duty, right?
He had dropped his flashlight earlier, so he couldn't see very well.
The heavy footsteps closed in again.
Just as Li Chengxi was about to turn and flash the creature again, he saw that the path ahead had disappeared.
Ahead of him was a large scree slope, its incline far too steep for a person to run down; it would be more like tumbling down.
Seeing this, Li Chengxi quickly turned to change direction, but the Cyclops Zombie was already there, blocking his path like an immovable wall.
Damn it, am I really out of options?
I'm a Demon God, for crying out loud! I should have some divine power in the real world, shouldn't I?
Just as Li Chengxi was having these thoughts, he suddenly saw a few pieces of what looked like yellow paper drift down from above the Cyclops Zombie's head.
At the same time, Lei Lei's voice called out from nearby.
"Five Thunder Orthodox Dharma, Lightning-Inducing Talisman!"
